A Proposal To Examine Naturally Occurring Mindfulness And Correctional Officer Stress And Burnout, Anthony M. Nasrallah
A Proposal To Examine Naturally Occurring Mindfulness And Correctional Officer Stress And Burnout, Anthony M. Nasrallah
Undergraduate Theses
Correctional officers (COs) work in institutions characterized by high interpersonal demand, safety risk, and organizational complexity; as a result, they experience elevated rates of occupational stress, burnout, and mental-health disorders relative to the general workforce. At the same time, research in allied helping professions demonstrates that mindfulness and related contemplative practices can reduce stress and improve emotion regulation and well-being. However, little is known about whether COs’ own, pre-existing informal mindfulness practices are associated with lower on-the-job stress or burnout rather than formal training courses. This review integrates findings from qualitative studies, quantitative analyses, and systematic reviews to show what …

Do Not Dismiss: How Community Is Built Through Kpop And Their Fandoms, Re Steinberg
Do Not Dismiss: How Community Is Built Through Kpop And Their Fandoms, Re Steinberg
Senior Seminars and Capstones
Fans of the music genre Kpop have been dismissed as juvenile or unimportant by some scholars and social commentators. Existing scholarship tends to focus on how the kpop fandom creates a space where the fans form groups amongst themselves, ex: dance cover groups, rather than how the fandoms influence individual motivations and benefits of participation. My aim with this study is to consider the effects that Kpop fandoms have on how fans identify and present themselves, feel a sense of belonging, and partake in the creative process. By using methods of oral history and content analysis of online social spaces, …

Building A Coordinated Care Network For New Mexico Veterans: A Roadmap For Statewide Implementation, Nosa Akol, Zachary M. Bridgewater, Vincent R. Delsignore, Emily Graham, Mary Rachel Keville
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
With the support of the New Mexico State Legislature, the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) is leading a multi-phase project to design a coordinated care system for New Mexican service members, veterans, and their families. In the project’s first phase, the IVMF conducted a landscape assessment to understand the needs of the military-connected community and examined the viability of a coordinated care system for the state. We found that veteran-serving organizations that participated felt that a coordinated care network would be of value to New Mexico veterans, but questions on how best to implement such a network …
Process Evaluation Of The Cheers Automated A1c Follow-Up Reminder System In Primary Care, Heather E. Lewis
Process Evaluation Of The Cheers Automated A1c Follow-Up Reminder System In Primary Care, Heather E. Lewis
Doctoral Dissertations & Projects
Background: Missed diabetes follow-up contributes to suboptimal glycemic control in primary care. Health record embedded reminder systems may improve continuity of care, but process evaluation is needed to understand real-world implementation (Bugge, 2024; Rathod et al., 2024).
Objective: To evaluate fidelity, workflow processes, and reach of the Cheers automated A1c reminder program among adults with type 2 diabetes in primary care.
Methods: This retrospective process evaluation used EHR data guided by the CDC Program Evaluation Framework (CDC, 2024). Measures included reminder delivery, follow-up completion, fidelity, and contextual factors.
Results: Of 72 eligible patients, 26 met success criteria (36.1%); 92.0% completed …

The origin(s) of life (OoL), which has puzzled scientists for centuries, remains a major scientific challenge in the 21st century. Understanding the processes relevant to the OoL demands theoretical frameworks that can connect processes across scales, from microscopic dynamics to emergent levels of organization. While experimental studies generate a wealth of data, theoretical and computational approaches provide the structure necessary to interpret and generalize these findings. In Part 1, we examined the most widely used experimental techniques in the field. Here, we focus on the mathematical, physical, and computational techniques used to model phenomena relevant to life’s origin(s). We discuss …

Ftsz Forms Biomolecular Condensates In A Polar-Growing Alphaproteobacterium, Todd A Cameron, Miguel Ángel Robles-Ramos, Lorenzo Suigo, Silvia Zorrilla, William Margolin

The conserved tubulin homolog FtsZ assembles into GTP-dependent protofilaments that organize the bacterial cell division machinery. Purified Escherichia coli FtsZ (FtsZEc) can form biomolecular condensates in the absence of GTP in macromolecular crowding conditions, but FtsZ condensates have not yet been confirmed in vivo. FtsZ from the Alphaproteobacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens (FtsZAt) localizes to distinct polar foci during growth and contains an intrinsically disordered region much longer than FtsZEc, suggesting a greater tendency to form condensates. Here, we show that purified FtsZAt readily formed dynamic condensates in vitro under molecular crowding conditions, and the addition of GTP induced the formation …

Bruen, Levels Of Generality, And Our Historical Tradition Of The Regulatory “Why”, Kevin K. Wang
Bruen, Levels Of Generality, And Our Historical Tradition Of The Regulatory “Why”, Kevin K. Wang
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
To pass Second Amendment muster under New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, gun laws encompassed by the Amendment’s plain text must align with our nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation. A challenged law comports with history and tradition when it is sufficiently analogous to historical regulations along two metrics: “how” and “why” the regulation burdens the right to keep and bear arms.
One glaring ambiguity leftover from Bruen is the level of generality at which courts, when analogizing between laws past and present, must frame a regulation’s “how” and “why”—an issue of major consequence. Characterizing the “how” …
The Body At The Mercy Of The State: Sama V. Hannigan And The Fragmented Right To Refuse Across State Lines, Mallory Yeates
The Body At The Mercy Of The State: Sama V. Hannigan And The Fragmented Right To Refuse Across State Lines, Mallory Yeates
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
Courts have long recognized bodily autonomy as a core constitutional value. Yet, doctrine governing reproductive healthcare tells a different story. Sama v. Hannigan exposes the fragility of the right to refuse medical treatment, particularly for incarcerated patients whose claims must survive the demanding standard of qualified immunity. When physicians removed Carrie Rahat Sama’s ovary despite her explicit refusal, her constitutional claim failed because no precedent with sufficiently similar facts had previously condemned such conduct. This case reveals how the “clearly established” prong of qualified immunity can foreclose redress for blatant violations of autonomy.
This Note argues that the viability of …
