Background:

The morphologic characteristics of placentas associated with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) have been described but with varying findings. Studies conducted at the onset of the pandemic reported frequency of Fetal Vascular Malperfusion (FVM), an umbrella term that describes occlusive vasculopathies that affect fetal circulation and their associated sequelae. Morphologic manifestations include thrombosis, avascular villi and vascular stromal karyorrhexis. Associated outcomes include fetal growth restriction, thromboembolic events such as neonatal stroke and fetal demise. Background Over the past decade, neuropsychopharmacology has shifted from stagnation to momentum, with first-in-class mechanisms and biomarker-enabled trials spanning psychiatry and neurology.

Methods We narratively synthesized advances from 2013 to 2026 across central nervous system (CNS) discovery and development, including pivotal trials, regulatory actions, digital/real-world evidence, genetics, artificial intelligence (AI), and implementation/global-access themes that are endorsed by international societies.

Results Therapeutic gains include rapid-acting drugs for treatment-resistant depression (intranasal esketamine); psychedelic-assisted therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder and depression; neuroactive steroid γ-aminobutyric acid-A receptor positive allosteric modulators (brexanolone, zuranolone) for postpartum depression; non-dopaminergic muscarinic agonists (xanomeline–trospium) for schizophrenia; orexin receptor antagonists …

We work with census records and historical texts from the Early California Population Project and Spanish Colonial census, covering California's 18th-19th century transition from Spanish and Mexican control to U.S. statehood. Increased concentrations of neuroblastoma suppressor of tumorigenicity 1 (NBL1) in the blood have been associated with disease progression in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and IgA nephropathy. However, it is unclear whether NBL1 is a causal factor for kidney disease and what is driving these increased concentrations in the blood. To test this, we evaluated Nbl1 heterozygous knockout (Nbl1^+/−) mice in two models of kidney injury, X-linked Alport syndrome (XLAS) and chronic low-dose cisplatin treatment, and compared them with wild-type (WT) controls. The void spot assay (VSA) is a widely used, noninvasive method for evaluating urinary behavior in rodents, but existing analysis tools are limited in scope, throughput, or accessibility. We developed Spoti-find, a stand-alone, open-source VSA image analysis application that introduces novel, biologically meaningful metrics including void circularity, distance to paper edge, and volume-based binning into primary, micro-, and nanovoids. Designed with usability in mind, Spoti-find features a graphical interface that enables manual or semiautomated spot identification, adjustable thresholds, and streamlined data export without the need for coding expertise. Total body irradiation is routinely used for myeloablation before a mouse hematopoietic cell transplant. Widespread transition from 137Cs g irradiators to x-ray systems has raised questions about whether these modalities yield equivalent biological outcomes. Although prior studies compared g and x-ray irradiation in syngeneic transplants, their performance in reciprocal congenic models and in primary acute myeloid leukemia (AML) transplants remains unclear. Here, we systematically evaluated g and x-ray irradiation across dose conditions and tested dose equivalents in CD45.1/CD45.2 reciprocal transplants and in AML transplant models. Heat stress is a major environmental challenge in poultry production that reduces growth, welfare, and immune function. As global temperatures rise, understanding how genetic selection influences responses to heat stress (HS) is critical for sustainable production. Broilers selected for low water conversion ratio (LWCR) represent a potential strategy for improving resource efficiency; however, their immune response capabilities under HS remain unclear. As outdoor recreation participation has steadily increased nationwide over the past decade, reaching record levels in 2024 amid long‑term growth trends (OIA, 2025), the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) is drawing rising numbers of hikers traveling through Montana’s gateway communities. Yet little is known about who these hikers are or how their presence affects the towns that support them. This report examines CDT hikers and their relationships with Montana gateway communities from two complementary perspectives. First, understanding hikers’ demographics, spending patterns, and trail behaviors using data from 507 respondents who completed Montana’s CDT sections between 2022 and 2024. Second, exploring how …

This article examines the response to Delaware’s much-heralded 2022 legal reform that permitted corporations, for the first time, to adopt charter provisions exculpating corporate officers from liability for breaching their fiduciary duty of care. Contrary to widespread predictions that corporate actors would swiftly adopt officer exculpation provisions, our analysis — using both traditional and generative artificial intelligence (AI) methods — reveals a surprisingly low rate of uptake, over three years after the reform’s enactment.

The rise of inequality and global warming are the two ultimate challenges of our time. After decades of congressional failure to address climate change, the private sector has stepped in and adopted a set of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies as a market-based solution to a public policy failure. ESG advocates hope that corporate executives would save our planet. Where Congress failed, ESG will succeed.

This Article argues that if ESG-driven climate stewardship ever achieves the scale necessary to have a real impact on global warming, it will hurt the poor. Legislative interventions to combat climate change are nearly …

Drug legalization, especially cannabis legalization, is a critical step forward in states’ willingness to address systemic disparities, privacy intrusions, violence, and other harms of the drug war. Yet, reforms center on legalization and repair through a narrow lens, focused on changes to the penal code. The public has found that narrow forms of legalization cannot serve their purported reparative purpose. Narrowly drawn legalization is illusory. Drug war harms and punishment for legalized substance use continue. Legalization reforms are vulnerable to political trends, resulting in rollback and retrenchment of drug war operations.

Legalization cannot deliver on its reparative terms without guarantees. …

This Article concerns the phenomenon of “statutory backup rights,” or statutes that provide protections parallel to constitutional rights that are believed to be at risk of judicial abrogation. Proposals for backup rights gained attention in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which not only eliminated the constitutional right to abortion but called into question some other constitutional rights as well. Shortly after Dobbs, Congress enacted a limited statutory backup for same-sex marriage. States have created backup rights across a range of topics, some of which appeal mostly to those …

Pathogens survive by balancing metabolic demands with environmental challenges that shape their virulence and adaptability. Shigella flexneri, a highly infectious human pathogen responsible for severe diarrheal disease worldwide, utilizes branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism to withstand stress conditions encountered within the host environment. In this study, we explored the Shigella isoleucine catabolism pathway by knocking out four genes in the S. flexneri isoleucine catabolic pathway (ilvE, fadA, fadD, and acnB) and examining their metabolism and virulence. We found that the ilvE and acnB mutants displayed reduced metabolic activity and smaller plaque size, while the fadD mutant showed decreased invasion. In …

This project seeks to ask and answer how the tourism industry has grown and continues to impact the lives of residents near the IDNP. This project examines if party labels drive participation in municipal elections. Progressive Era reforms removed partisan labels in attempts to weaken party machines and simplify local governance. Many cities continue to implement these reforms today. However, existing research suggests that party labels provide important informational and mobilizing cues that should increase turnout, especially in low-information elections. Using a comparison of four Michigan municipalities, this paper evaluates how partisan and nonpartisan systems shape local election turnout. The results show that the relationship is more complicated than expected. While party labels will still matter for how voters make decisions, election timing emerges …

Deep distortions occur when a person remembers multiple incompatible reality states as true, producing logical impossibilities. Those impossibilities include violations of basic logical principles such as additivity, countable additivity, and universal event. Previously, deep distortions have been detected in experiments using word lists and using real-world facts. We report two experiments in which we extend these findings to realistic pictures that figure prominently in legal cases. In Experiment 1, we presented participants with images of celebrity faces and asked them true or false questions about their identities, which were either conventional probes (e.g., "This is Alexander Hamilton") or disjunctive probes …

Seizure disorders are often misunderstood and can carry stigmas, especially in institutional care settings where direct care staff knowledge and preparedness affect patient safety and quality of life. At Parsons State Hospital and Training Center (PSH&TC), staff lacked standardized training on seizures, and no formal seizure response protocol existed, which created gaps in care and reduced staff confidence. The purpose of this project was to improve staff understanding of seizures and establish a clear, consistent procedure for responding to seizure events. The primary objective of this project was to assess the impact of the New Directions Behavioral Health Employee Assistance Program, an online intervention, on teacher stress and well-being. Teacher participation was recruited through email, flyers, and in-person discussions. The study used a mixed-method design, including pre- and post-project surveys of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to measure changes in stress, and the System Usability Scale (SUS) to evaluate the ease of use of online intervention. Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The clinical outcomes are largely determined by thrombus burden and its hemodynamic impact on the right ventricle (RV). Over the past decade, catheter-directed mechanical thrombectomy has emerged as a promising alternative for systemic thrombolysis for PE management, particularly in patients at high risk for major bleeding. This approach provides rapid mechanical debulking of thrombus without exposure to thrombolytics and has been associated with significant improvements in RV function and pulmonary artery pressures. This thesis project analyzes the novel Annihilation (2014) by Jeff VanderMeer and situates the biologist’s transformation and transition in the book in a trans ecological framework. By expanding on foundational texts such as Jackson Jesse Nash’s “‘I Am Not Returning Home’: A Transgender Reading of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation”, this paper argues that representations of fungus in Annihilation present a possibility for trans futurity rooted in transformation, ecological entanglement, and a rejection of binary thought. This thesis derives a Korean queer theory from the shamanic feminist poetics of Kim Hyesoon, arguing that her theorization of Korean indigenous spirituality [musok] and the shaman song "Abandoned Princess Baridegi" constitutes a counter-epistemological framework capable of articulating queer possibility outside the ideological constraints of Western critical discourse. Drawing on the three essays of Princess Abandoned, translated by Don Mee Choi, I read Kim's work through a methodology of resignification (Judith Butler) and disidentification (José Esteban Muñoz) to argue that her agentive resignification of femininity and yin theorizes a disidentificatory performance-space [hyonbin] where queer Korean subjects enact worldmaking and …

In August 2024 the Utah Attorney General’s Office filed a Bill of Complaint challenging the federal government’s ownership of 18.5 million acres of unappropriated land within the state’s borders (1). The state intends the lawsuit to pave the way for eventual transfer of the land to state ownership (2). The Legislature allocated roughly $20 million to the lawsuit as well as a marketing campaign to increase public support for efforts to transfer public lands out of federal ownership.
