This study investigated implicit statistical learning (ISL) ability in individuals with Parkinson’sdisease (PD) to further characterize the influence of the basal ganglia degeneration on ISL. The first research aim looked to investigate ISL ability in individuals with PD in comparison to age- matched healthy controls. Additionally, the relationship between cognitive measures and ISL task performance was investigated to identify potential interactions between ISL and aspects of cognition considered to be necessary for it. Background: Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), is the most prevalent category of brain injury. Despite its classification as a mild injury, concussion can result in persistent symptoms that impact one’s ability to participate in everyday life. Among the challenges associated with concussion, discourse production (e.g., storytelling) has gained attention as a potential area of subtle impairment in people who have experienced a concussion, as it places high cognitive demands on the individual. This study examines gender politics and the unlearning of patriarchy in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, centering lived experiences of Latinas and Black women while critically engaging men's roles in both reproducing and challenging gender inequality. Grounded in Critical Pedagogy, intersectionality, Critical Race Theory (CRT)/LatCrit, and whiteness studies, the research employs a mixed-methods design, including metadata analysis, surveys, interviews, focus groups, and critical discourse analysis. Intersectionality serves as the analytical framework, highlighting how patriarchy, white supremacy, predatory capitalism, race, class, and geopolitics intersect to shape differentiated experiences of marginalization and agency. Of equal importance is the selection of methodologies that must be tailored to the geological setting and dataset resolution to accurately depict the subsurface. Background: Hispanic populations in the US experience higher diabetes prevalence, yet Hispanic men participate in traditional diabetes education programs at lower rates than non-Hispanic White men and Hispanic women, in part because existing programs lack cultural and gender-relevant tailoring. To address this disparity, the Diabetes Garage (DG) program was developed for Hispanic men in Southwest Texas, leveraging car culture by using automotive maintenance analogies to illustrate diabetes self-management concepts to engage men. Late Cretaceous to Paleogene age contractional deformation in the southern Basin and Range province is obscured by widespread, Cenozoic extensional faulting and volcanism. As a result, debate continues about the structural style and tectonic evolution of the region. There are two end-member structural models that have been proposed for deformation: 1) high-angle reverse faulting and basement uplift and 2) thin-skinned faulting and development of a thrust belt. We undertook new geologic mapping, cross-section construction, and structural analysis in Sierra Rica, in the bootheel region of southern New Mexico, to help evaluate these hypotheses. Hybrid zones provide unique opportunities to study morphological and ecological consequences of hybridization. While landscape genetic studies confirm a newly established contact zone between Mexican Ducks (Anas diazi) and Western Gulf Coast Mottled Ducks (Anas fulvigula maculatus), I provide the first quantitative morphological comparisons of the two taxa and their hybrids in Chapter 1. First, I report significant differences among parental species in lamellar density, body mass, tarsus length, and wing chord lengths, with hybrids exhibiting intermediate or backcross-aligned phenotypes. Any life-testing experiments with censoring generate ordered failure data, which are used to estimate model parameters of the underlying lifetime distribution. However, predicting unobserved failure times is an important goal post inference. Balakrishnan and Bhattacharya [2021] showed that joint best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) are more efficient than their marginal counterparts. In this thesis, we introduce a compound optimal design to compute joint BLUPs based on a suitably chosen subset of the observed data. Time-dependent fourth-order partial differential equations arise in a wide range of applications in applied mathematics, physics, and engineering, including thin structure models, phase separation, and pattern formation. Their numerical approximation is challenging because the presence of fourth-order spatial derivatives typically requires high-regularity discretizations. A useful alternative is to reformulate the original problem as a coupled second-order system and approximate it by mixed discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods.

This study examines the lived experiences of caregivers of children with pediatric feeding disorders (PFDs) in the Paso del Norte Region using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Pediatric feeding disorders require sustained medical, social, and emotional demand, often placing caregivers in complex decision-making roles. Understanding how cultural beliefs and context shape caregiving practices is essential to improving services provided by speech-language pathologists and other service providers. The Phase Field Crystal (PFC) model is a continuum-based framework used to study theevolution of crystalline materials while preserving microscopic structural features over diffusive time scales. It captures complex phenomena such as phase transitions, defect dynamics, and microstructure formation via a nonlinear sixth-order partial differential equation derived from a free-energy functional. In this context, the phrase "sixth-order" indicates that the highest spatial derivative appearing in the equation is of order six. The long-term neurobiological consequences of adolescent antidepressant exposure remain poorly understood, despite the substantial increase in selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) prescription rates in youth. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation was to determine whether adolescent exposure to the SSRI fluoxetine (FLX) produces lasting molecular and behavioral adaptations, using rodents as a model system. While much of the best-known literature on the Franco-Algerian War has emphasized insurgency, counterinsurgency, and the grievances of the colonized, this thesis takes a broader, historical and public administration approach by analyzing the relationship between the development and implementation phases of government and military policies and the unintended, sometimes fatal, outcomes that followed. Although it does this from the perspective of policymaking in the country that is trying to maintain control over its distant territory, it has implications for those interested in maximizing resistance to these policymakers.

This research brief assesses a changing U.S. military force structure in an era of waning trust in public institutions and new security pressures, both domestic and global. While many U.S. public institutions are facing declining trust, one key aspect in the case of the military is lack of understanding between U.S. veterans and nonveterans—often termed the civil-military gap. Understanding this gap is necessary to forge connections across military-connected communities and those without service experience. Bridging this gap is a timely model to restore baseline confidence in many institutions that serve all members of the public.

This article examines the conditions under which constitutional courts are able to resist executive attempts at institutional capture during periods of democratic erosion. Instead of concentrating on the mechanisms through which courts are attacked, it focuses on how courts effectively behave in the long term when operating under sustained political pressure. The central claim is that judicial resistance cannot be explained solely by formal institutional design or by a general commitment to constitutional principles. It depends on the interaction of three variables: judicial replaceability, external support, and enforcement capacity.

Companies in the United States have increasingly turned to reorganization under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code to resolve mass tort claims. Despite this experience, Australian companies have hesitated to use similar processes to achieve the same goal. Instead, mass tort liability continues to be resolved through traditional class action litigation. This essay argues that such hesitation is unfounded and that the creditors’ scheme of arrangement process in Part 5.1 of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) provides not only an appropriate method for resolving mass tort liability, but one which is in many respects superior to a Chapter 11 reorganization. …

Early recognition of shockable cardiac rhythms and timely defibrillation are critical components of effective resuscitation during in-hospital cardiac arrest. Despite established guidelines from the American Heart Association (AHA), nurses may experience uncertainty or reduced confidence when identifying shockable rhythms and delivering timely defibrillation during cardiac arrest events. The purpose of this project was to examine whether a structured educational intervention incorporating simulation-based training could improve intensive care unit (ICU) nurses’ confidence and knowledge in recognizing shockable rhythms and performing timely defibrillation. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to examine educators' perceptions of their roles in students' post-secondary transition. Federal mandates require special education teachers to be key components in supporting students during this process. The literature examines the multifaceted components of the transition process, including Kohler’s Taxonomy 2.0 and Schlossberg’s Transition Framework.

Winter conditions are an important driver of recruitment variability in freshwater fishes, yet winter severity is often characterized using single climate metrics. These simplified approaches may not capture the cumulative stress experienced by fishes during winter. The Accumulated Winter Season Severity Index (AWSSI) integrates multiple components of winter climate and may therefore provide a more biologically relevant indicator of overwinter survival. In this study, we compared AWSSI with traditional winter severity metrics to explain interannual variation in overwinter survival of juvenile Walleye (Sander vitreus) in Harlan County Reservoir, Nebraska. Moving Beyond Willpower: A New Direction For Media Literacy Instruction, Mandi Goodsett

Academic librarians and others often engage with media literacy instruction by promoting fact-checking strategies, such as lateral reading or Mike Caulfield’s SIFT. Evidence shows that these strategies are valuable and can be effective, but they all ultimately rely on individual students to use willpower to overcome cognitive habits, biases, strong parasocial relationships with content creators, the power of algorithms, and other challenges to fact-checking content in the moment. This paper offers an alternative approach that instead encourages librarians to support students in intentionally redesigning their information environments to improve the quality of information that they encounter in the first place.
