Deep distortions occur when a person remembers multiple incompatible reality states as true, producing logical impossibilities. Those impossibilities include violations of basic logical principles such as additivity, countable additivity, and universal event. Previously, deep distortions have been detected in experiments using word lists and using real-world facts. We report two experiments in which we extend these findings to realistic pictures that figure prominently in legal cases. In Experiment 1, we presented participants with images of celebrity faces and asked them true or false questions about their identities, which were either conventional probes (e.g., "This is Alexander Hamilton") or disjunctive probes …

Seizure disorders are often misunderstood and can carry stigmas, especially in institutional care settings where direct care staff knowledge and preparedness affect patient safety and quality of life. At Parsons State Hospital and Training Center (PSH&TC), staff lacked standardized training on seizures, and no formal seizure response protocol existed, which created gaps in care and reduced staff confidence. The purpose of this project was to improve staff understanding of seizures and establish a clear, consistent procedure for responding to seizure events. The primary objective of this project was to assess the impact of the New Directions Behavioral Health Employee Assistance Program, an online intervention, on teacher stress and well-being. Teacher participation was recruited through email, flyers, and in-person discussions. The study used a mixed-method design, including pre- and post-project surveys of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) to measure changes in stress, and the System Usability Scale (SUS) to evaluate the ease of use of online intervention. At the same time, libraries have confronted a disturbing rise in threats of violence and harassment directed at staff and patrons. State and federal actors have targeted library budgets. And on occasion, local residents have voted to defund their own libraries.

Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The clinical outcomes are largely determined by thrombus burden and its hemodynamic impact on the right ventricle (RV). Over the past decade, catheter-directed mechanical thrombectomy has emerged as a promising alternative for systemic thrombolysis for PE management, particularly in patients at high risk for major bleeding. This approach provides rapid mechanical debulking of thrombus without exposure to thrombolytics and has been associated with significant improvements in RV function and pulmonary artery pressures. Introduction Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) is characterized by transient left ventricular (LV) dysfunction following a stressor in the absence of obstructive coronary artery disease. We present a case of a less common variant with right ventricular involvement. Hospital course A 45-year-old woman with sickle cell disease and asthma presented with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fevers, one week after the death of her father. Examination revealed an irregular tachycardia. Labs demonstrated leukocytosis, elevated lactate, and markedly increased troponin. Chest imaging showed bilateral basilar opacities. ECG demonstrated atrial flutter with rapid ventricular response. She developed progressive respiratory failure requiring intubation. Repeat ECG …

This thesis project analyzes the novel Annihilation (2014) by Jeff VanderMeer and situates the biologist’s transformation and transition in the book in a trans ecological framework. By expanding on foundational texts such as Jackson Jesse Nash’s “‘I Am Not Returning Home’: A Transgender Reading of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation”, this paper argues that representations of fungus in Annihilation present a possibility for trans futurity rooted in transformation, ecological entanglement, and a rejection of binary thought. This thesis derives a Korean queer theory from the shamanic feminist poetics of Kim Hyesoon, arguing that her theorization of Korean indigenous spirituality [musok] and the shaman song "Abandoned Princess Baridegi" constitutes a counter-epistemological framework capable of articulating queer possibility outside the ideological constraints of Western critical discourse. Drawing on the three essays of Princess Abandoned, translated by Don Mee Choi, I read Kim's work through a methodology of resignification (Judith Butler) and disidentification (José Esteban Muñoz) to argue that her agentive resignification of femininity and yin theorizes a disidentificatory performance-space [hyonbin] where queer Korean subjects enact worldmaking and …

In August 2024 the Utah Attorney General’s Office filed a Bill of Complaint challenging the federal government’s ownership of 18.5 million acres of unappropriated land within the state’s borders (1). The state intends the lawsuit to pave the way for eventual transfer of the land to state ownership (2). The Legislature allocated roughly $20 million to the lawsuit as well as a marketing campaign to increase public support for efforts to transfer public lands out of federal ownership. This study was conducted on the members of the 2025-26 St. John's "Johnnies" swim and dive team. This study used both subjective surveys and objective HRV readings that the swimmers took before and after practice. The first day of testing occurred on the last day of the regular training season, and the second day of testing occurred on the last day of tapered training. Results of the surveys and HRV readings were compared between pre and post-practice, and pre and post-taper. As our community-engaged learning project for our Community Psychology class, we volunteered at the Overcomers International Fellowship (OIF) Dream Center. The OIF Dream Center is a nonprofit organization that provides previously incarcerated men with resources and programs to help them as they enter back into society. Among these resources are housing, food, medical care, support groups, and treatment. Additionally, the Dream Center helps men overcome mental health obstacles, disabilities, and chemical dependencies. These programs enable residents to prepare for life outside of prison. They are given opportunities to further their education, find jobs, attend therapy, and reconnect with their families. …

Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of acute dietary nitrate (NO3−) and caffeine (CAF) supplementation on end power (EP) and work performed above EP (WEP) in trained male cyclists during a 3 min all-out test (3MT) on a cycle ergometer.

Methods: Fifteen healthy, trained male cyclists (28.5 ± 5.3 years, 79.2 ± 9.1 kg, VO2peak 55.2 ± 5.6 mL·kg−1·min−1) completed four exercise trials in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study design separated by 3–7 days. Peer Recovery Support Specialists (PRSSs) are certified professionals that provide social, informational, and logistical supportto people in recovery fromsubstance use disorders. In this study, we report the findings from design work completed with a teamof PRSSsto define workflowand informationalneeds for the developmentofa novel point of care software. Through our qualitative research we uncovered a significant amount of undocumented work that is necessary for a PRSS to provide individualized support to their clients. Thus, much PRSS work is not quantified and rendered "invisible." We present technology design strategies that help quantify these tasks and illuminate the complexity of PRSS work.

We argue that leading the adoption of AI is not a simple engineering exercise but rather represents a behavioral exercise where change management principles—the process by which organizations plan, implement, and embed changes in practices—are employed. Strokes are the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States, with recovery outcomes varying widely depending on the timing and quality of rehabilitation provided. Evidence suggests that there is a critical neuroplasticity window within the first 72 hours after a stroke's onset. This window can offer heightened potential in recovery outcomes; however, clinical guidelines are inconsistent in giving a timeline for stroke rehabilitation initiation. The retention of -ss- in the Aeolic dialects implies that Proto-Aeolic had s-stem dative plurals with -ss- (ἄνθεσ-σι). Yet the Lesbian lyric poets only have forms with a single -s- (ἄνθεσι). In an influential study, Morpurgo Davies argued that the ἄνθεσιν-type is native to Lesbian and used these forms as crucial evidence for the simplification of -ss- in Proto-Aeolic. However, a closer look at the epigraphic and literary evidence strongly suggests that ἄνθεσιν in Lesbian lyric is a poetic borrowing from Ionic and that Proto-Aeolic maintained -ss- in the dative plural of the s-stems. This thesis illuminates the story of Dinah Whipple, a former enslaved and literate woman of color living in Portsmouth, New Hampshire during the early 1800s. Dinah opened the Ladies Charitable African School, the first school for Black children in New Hampshire, and as an educator she was a community leader and championed social issues facing her community. This thesis will use the Ladies Charitable African School and Dinah Whipple’s work in New England to show the lengths local communities went to, to establish accessible schools. American schools face teacher shortages in many disciplines and age groups (Darling-Hammond et al., 2023; Learning Policy Institute, 2024). Rural and urban schools, especially those serving low-socioeconomic-status students, feel this shortage most (Goldhaber et al., 2021; Ingersoll et al., 2022). Teachers report rising dissatisfaction with their work (Lin et al., 2024). This study examined teacher working conditions in two high-turnover districts: Orleans and Jefferson Parish Schools. To achieve autonomous control of a surface watercraft requires an accurate model describing the dynamics of the system. To this end, the modeling of dynamics of an airboat with a combustion engine-based propulsion system is investigated. Specifically, a black-box data-based approach using neural networks. To facilitate this, a custom data collection system was developed to record linear and rotational motion during field tests. Due to the airboats unique ability to traverse different terrains, not just water, the modeling of dynamics on different terrains was investigated.

This research utilized an existing SWMM modeling framework of the Ormond area within St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. A micro scale PCSWMM model was updated using GIS Derived values for CN, percent imperviousness, and subcatchment slope and compared to an macro-scale model. Models were compared under several storm events, which included the recent May 14, 2020 storm as well as 2-, 10-, and 100-year design storms. Peak flow, total inflow volume, and hydrograph characteristics were analyzed to assess response of each model.

The results show that the macro-scale model generally produces higher peak flows and total volumes, while the micro-scale model …

Soil moisture is a key variable in hydrology that controls water and energy exchange between the land surface and the atmosphere. Despite its importance, reliably estimating soil moisture is challenging because different measurement methods measure it at different scales and with varying accuracy. Ground-based sensors provide reliable point-scale data but are costly and spatially limited. In this context, models that can produce spatially and temporally consistent soil moisture are valuable tools. Creating believable, socially intelligent virtual characters that are culturally and historically grounded requires more than any single artificial intelligence paradigm can provide. Symbolic social physics systems such as Ensemble offer interpretable, human-authored representations of social norms and relationships but produce linguistically stilted interaction. Statistical approaches---particularly large language models---generate fluent dialogue but lack behavioral coherence and cultural grounding. Virtual reality provides embodied presence that transforms abstract social computation into experiential engagement but contributes no social intelligence of its own. This thesis presents an optimization-based framework for power management in hybrid towing vessels operating under dynamic mission conditions. A physically consistent modeling approach is developed, incorporating battery state-of-charge dynamics (SOC), unified power flow, and operational constraints. The framework evaluates rule-based control using fixed heuristic thresholds, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and multi-objective Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) under a representative harbor-assist mission profile. Results show that optimization-based methods significantly outperform rule-based control. PSO achieves the lowest fuel consumption and near-perfect tracking with minimal battery use, while GA provides balanced performance with moderate battery utilization. NSGA-II reveals a …
