Western Michigan University offers various options, including Faculty-Led Programs, WMU Exchange Programs, Partner Study Abroad Programs, University-Approved Provider Programs, International Internships, and Independent Study Abroad Opportunities. The University-Approved Provider Programs option at WMU allows students to study abroad through a provider that could more directly meet their interests and goals due to the personalized options available. This study examines the historical and contemporary factors shaping relationships between Indigenous communities and law enforcement in the United States, with a specific focus on tribal nations in Michigan. Using a historical framework that includes treaty-making, forced removal, and evolving legal decisions, this research examines the use of treaties and diplomacy to initiate new socio-political structures in Native American communities. Similarly, the emergence of policing in the United States impacted the relationship between law enforcement and Indigenous communities by creating hostility and distrust. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most common lower limb injuries and pose significant physical, psychological, and long-term functional challenges for athletes. Additionally, research has suggested that females are up to eight times more likely to experience an ACL injury than their male counterparts. This increased risk is multifactorial with risks including anatomical structure, neuromuscular control, strength deficits, and hormonal fluctuations. Public conversations often question whether Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) receives too many diagnoses. At the same time, many girls and women report years of struggling without recognition or support. This contrast suggests that the issue may not simply be how often clinicians diagnose ADHD, but how they recognize it and whose symptoms prompt evaluation. ADHD does not present identically across individuals. Boys frequently display hyperactive or disruptive behaviors that draw attention in school and clinical settings. Girls more commonly experience inattentiveness, emotional intensity, or internal distress that may not disrupt others in obvious ways. When adults interpret these behaviors differently, they …

The opioid crisis is an epidemic in which fentanyl related overdoses are becoming more common. With the increase in prescription and recreational drugs, there has been a rise in drug combinations and exhibitions in the United States. Fentanyl has been found to be combined with other opiates like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, creating a higher risk of overdoses when being used recreationally. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, (PFAS) create the water-resistant layer found on environmentally-friendly straws, such as paper and agave-based straws. Upon prolonged exposure, PFAS can cause serious health problems in the human body, such as decreased antibiotic responses. Due to the increased use of environmentally-friendly straws, we examined the transfer of PFAS to liquids that are representing beverages to determine if a risk of exposure is present or increased with the usage of the straws. The opioid epidemic in the United States is a persistent public health issue exacerbated by increasingly dangerous and potent synthetic opioids. Although there are growing levels of access to naloxone and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as well as growing numbers of overdose-related deaths, these data indicate that U.S. drug policy continues to be characterized by a primarily reactive and partially punitive framework. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that influence academic performance and mental health among college students. Specifically, we will explore whether felt academic pressure is associated with depression, anxiety, and stress. Furthermore, we will examine whether cultural orientation and/or academic resilience buffers these effects. Academic pressure was measured using the 9-item Academic Expectations Stress Inventory (AESI). Mental health outcomes were measured using the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (21-items). Cultural orientation was measured using the Horizontal and Vertical Dimensions of Individualism and Collectivism Scale (HVDIC; 12-items). This study explores the perceived experience and personal growth from students who participated in the 2025 Florida Undergraduate Research Conference. The study is focused on students’ qualitative descriptions of the expectations they had regarding presenting their work and engaging in conference activities. In a short-term longitudinal design, participants (N = 353) completed a survey examining their overall feelings about the FURC conference. Specifically, we asked about expected benefits and concerns prior to attending the conference; next, we asked about experienced benefits and surprises after the conclusion of the conference. Harm reduction is a public health initiative that focuses on reducing the harms associated with substance use. These initiatives are currently being implemented all throughout Europe and across Canada in order to combat the addiction and overdose crisis. The variation in violent crime rates in the U.S. has been a persistent concern in the criminal justice system, notably homicides and offenses like murder and non-negligent manslaughter (NNM). Prior research has suggested that socioeconomic factors like poverty, firearm availability, population density, along with regional and cultural differences, could be a primary contributing factor to geographic disparities in violent crime rates. Universities across the United States invest significant resources into student mental health services, yet many Generation Z students do not fully engage with the support available to them. Students consistently report high levels of stress and psychological distress, yet many students do not take the step of using available services. Existing research suggests that motivation may play a critical role in whether students engage at all. BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the rate of intravenous fluid (IVF) administration in sepsis influences glycocalyx breakdown. This study aimed to measure the effect of rapid versus slow fluid bolus in a septic pig model on the integrity of the glycocalyx by measuring the serum levels of heparan sulfate and syndecan-1, breakdown products of the glycocalyx. Because endothelial glycocalyx is composed of apical cell membrane-bound proteoglycans such as syndecan-1, covalently bound with long linear glycosaminoglycans such as heparan sulfate, shedding of these different glycocalyx components is closely related. Increased oxygen levels at birth regulate myocyte bioenergetic and structural maturation controlled by mitochondrial cyclophilin D (CypD). We evaluated mechanisms of neonatal hypoxic cardiac dysfunction by exposing neonatal mice to 12% oxygen and studied cardiac bioenergetics, myocyte maturation, and function. Hypoxia decreased the activity/assembly of electron transport chain complex I, uncoupled oxidative phosphorylation, increased proliferation, decreased differentiation, increased ventricular mass, and decreased cardiac function. CypD inhibition rescued most hypoxia-mediated effects and increased cardiac function. In conclusion, neonatal hypoxia alters cardiac bioenergetics, myocyte maturation, and cardiac function through CypD-dependent pathways, providing potential therapeutic targets for neonatal cardiac dysfunction.

Axon degeneration (AxD) is an early and often causative event in many neurodegenerative diseases, yet no treatments exist to halt the breakdown of axons. In healthy axons, the axon survival factor NMNAT2 inhibits SARM1, the central executioner of programmed axon degeneration. NMNAT2 is a highly labile protein produced in the soma and trafficked into the axon. Nerve injury blocks axonal transport and leads to rapid depletion of axonal NMNAT2, causing NMN buildup and NAD+ loss. Recent breakthroughs led to the discovery that SARM1 is activated by an increase in the NMN to NAD+ ratio. While the SARM1 axon degeneration pathway …

Many everyday decisions involve outcomes that are both delayed and probabilistic. Although previous research has reported inconsistent age-related effects on discounting, few studies have taken into account the multi-attribute nature of real-world choices or the moderating role of financial resources. Accordingly, the present research examined the interactive effects of age, income, and multi-attribute contexts to test how resource constraints and task dimensionality moderate attribute salience. Across two studies (total N = 600), stratified samples of younger (35-45) and older (62-72) adults with lower (<$60,000) and higher (>$100,000) annual household incomes completed standard and multi-attribute adjusting-amount discounting tasks. The gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) breeding season occurs throughout spring and early summer across its distributional range, but recent research shows that in southeastern Florida, mating also occurs in the fall and winter months. This project evaluates the gopher tortoise’s extended reproductive season in southeastern Florida and female fecundity. The study, conducted at two locations in South Florida: Jupiter, FL and Boca Raton, FL, used field ultrasound equipment and radiographs to identify gravid females and determine clutch size. This poster highlights the creation of an Android mobile application for reminders. This app is titled It's Time, Remind! Developed with the Flutter SDK and SQLite for the local database. Firebase Authentication was utilized for user account registration, login/ logout, and profile management. Users can additionally choose to use the app without an account. Users are able to view, create, and delete reminders and notes. Reminders also notify at specified times.

Background: Large Language Models (LLMs) are predominantly trained and aligned in ways that reinforce Westerncentric epistemologies and socio-cultural norms, leading to cultural homogenization and limiting their ability to reflect global civilizational plurality. Existing benchmarking frameworks fail to adequately capture this bias, as they rely on rigid, closed-form assessments that overlook the complexity of cultural inclusivity. Objectives: To address this cultural bias problem, we introduce WorldView-Bench, a benchmark designed to evaluate Global Cultural Inclusivity (GCI) in LLMs by analyzing their ability to accommodate diverse worldviews. Most Massachusetts residents disapprove of President Donald Trump's handling of foreign affairs, the economy, and his overall job performance. Bay Staters are also downbeat about the direction on the country, with three-quarters believing the country is headed in the wrong direction. Slim majorities in Massachusetts support requiring photo ID to vote, requiring physical evidence of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, and requiring states to establish programs to remove noncitizens from the voter rolls, while nearly two-thirds oppose prohibiting the use of mail-in ballots unless due to illness, disability, military service, or travel.

Purpose: To develop a practical risk-stratification framework for unplanned cesarean delivery (CD) among term nulliparous individuals with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) undergoing induction of labor (IOL).

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study at a single tertiary care center (January 2010-March 2025) of nulliparous individuals with singleton gestations diagnosed with HDP undergoing IOL at ≥ 37 + 0 weeks. We excluded multiple gestations, major fetal anomalies, planned CD, or intrauterine fetal death. We included demographic and pregnancy characteristics available prior to induction and evaluated association with unplanned CD. Stepwise backward logistic regression was used to build a model for …
