This thesis synthesizes and reflects on media effects and hip-hop studies to examine how the Hollywood rap/trap industry participates in the influence of normalization of crime and anti-social behaviors, substance use, and the sexualization of women among youth (ages 13–21). I integrate analytic evidence on media violence with lyric/content analyses of rap and critiques of the criminal justice system in hip-hop. Accurate disease classification from radiology reports is essential for many applications. While supervised fine-tuning (SFT) of lightweight LLMs improves accuracy, it can degrade reasoning. We propose a two-stage approach: SFT on disease labels followed by Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) to refine predictions by optimizing accuracy and format without reasoning supervision. Across three radiologist-annotated datasets, SFT outperformed baselines and GRPO further improved classification and enhanced reasoning recall and comprehensiveness.

Pseudo-nitzschia and Dinophysis are two commonly occurring phytoplankton genera along Europe’s Atlantic coast. Species within these genera can produce toxins that accumulate in shellfish and pose health risks if consumed. Sustained monitoring of shellfish growing waters has generated decades-long time-series for these two genera, which have been considered for use in statutory biodiversity assessments as proxies for diatoms and dinoflagellates. BACKGROUND: IgG-4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory disease that can affect any organ system. Myocarditis is a rare manifestation.

CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old woman with clinically diagnosed IgG4-RD, who had recently completed corticosteroid taper, presented with multiple admissions for recurrent chest pain and myocardial injury. Coronary angiography repeatedly showed preserved coronary anatomy, and initial transthoracic echocardiography showed preserved left ventricular systolic function. Subsequent transthoracic echocardiography showed rapid decline in ejection fraction, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed myocardial oedema, infarct scar, and patchy non-ischaemic fibrosis.
