Congress and presidents have clashed over yearly funding awarded to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) throughout the existence of the government agency. Although presidents have routinely requested funding cuts in their annual budget proposals, Congress has steadily increased the amount of congressionally directed funding NIH receives yearly. Outlined in the Constitution, Congress holds the “power of the purse”; therefore, the legislative body provides federal funding for NIH and other executive departments.1 However, presidents have repeatedly attempted to rescind funds to NIH without congressional approval through impoundment. Backgate Thin Film Transistor With Solution-Based Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (Igzo), Jeremy Choh

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

This independent study is a continuation of the FL25 project focusing on solution-based indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO). The solution-based method of IGZO provides a low-cost, high performance semiconductor which can be used in oxide thin film transistors. It was found that an 1:1:1, 2:1:1, and 5:1:1 ratio of In:Ga:Zn in a 0.5M concentration of 2-methoxyethanol with a 10 minute 70◦C prebake and 30 minute anneal at 300◦C produced high quality IGZO film. Backgate thin film transistors using IGZO was then fabricated to measure the electrical properties of the semiconductor. Using a probe station, it was found in electrical measurements …

In this study, we examined five different intimacy needs (i.e., emotional, social, sexual, intellectual, and recreational) across several types of modern-day romantic relationships (i.e., committed, friends with benefits, one-night-stands, and polyamorous) among undergraduates (N = 240). Overall, individuals rated emotional needs as most important and social needs as least important to a fulfilling partnership. Additionally, they expected committed partners to meet 81% of their total intimacy needs but other types of partners to meet far fewer (i.e., one-night stands = 20%, friends with benefits = 35%, polyamorous = 50%). Men and women rated intimacy needs similarly across most relationship …

Background: . Autologous fat transfer (AFT) is a well-established technique for cosmetic breast augmentation and reconstructive breast procedures. Historically, however, graft retention has been highly variable. The Viality™ system (Tiger Aesthetics Medical, Conshohocken, PA) is an FDA-cleared, in-line fat processing device designed to concentrate viable adipocytes, improving retention.

Methods: . In this prospective, 14-center study (NCT05258305), 190 patients underwent AFT for cosmetic (n=85) or reconstructive (n=105) breast procedures. Introduction – We present the results from the observations of the galaxy NGC 628 with the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph (PN.S) equipped with the Hα arm. With the third PN.S arm, the Hα arm, we measure the Hα fluxes, in addition to fluxes and line-of-sight velocities (LOSV) of monochromatic, spatially unresolved [OIII] 5007Å sources, in the nearly face-on disc of NGC 628. Methods – The narrow band color ([OIII] 5007Å–Hα) vs m5007 magnitude diagram does separate planetary nebulae (PNe) from single compact ionized HII regions and supernovae remnants (SNRs), which also emit in [OIII]5007 Å. Recurrent driver mutations in genes encoding histone H3 (H3.3K27M and H3.1K27M) are observed in ~80% of diffuse midline gliomas (DMG), which lead to aberrant gene regulation, yet the specific RNA polymerase II (Pol2) regulators that induce transcriptional dysregulation in DMG are not fully defined. We identified multiple regulators of Pol2 elongation as DMG genetic dependencies in a chromatin-focused CRISPR screen. Additional studies confirm that knockout (KO) of the Pol2 SIII complex gene elongin B (ELOB) inhibits DMG cell proliferation in tissue culture and tumor growth in xenograft models. What’s one experience that shaped your career—but didn’t come from a formal job?

Civic engagement offers students more than an opportunity to serve.  It can build skills, confidence, connections, and pathways to meaningful careers.  Yet students do not always recognize or articulate the value of these experiences. This interactive session explores practical strategies for helping student connect service to career readiness and community impact through intentional reflection, skill identification, and storytelling.  Participants will leave with approaches they can use to help students move from service, to purpose, to pathway.

Background: Global migration has heightened the need to understand how cultural transitions influence body image and eating behaviors. In the U.S., Chinese international students represent one of the largest migrant student groups, with women showing particular vulnerability to body image concerns and disordered eating. Yet, the ways in which cultural transition and acculturative stress shape these outcomes remain insufficiently studied.

We present a method of estimating model parameters for non-linear ODEs using least-squares regression. The coefficient of determination can be used as a measure of model fit. The method is demonstrated using US population data to fit a logistic growth model. Also, a competing species model is used to describe the interaction of two different species of yeast.

This study proposes a framework for examining the spatiotemporal characteristics of drought in Anbar Governorate, Iraq, for both historical and future periods, using LARS-WG, five CMIP6 GCMs (SSP245 and SSP585), a Drought Index Calculator, and GIS tools. The Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI-12) was used to evaluate the spatial-temporal patterns of drought frequency and severity at seven meteorological stations between 1985 and 2015 and between 2021 and 2040. The main conclusions from the study included that LARS-WG performs successfully for climatic factor projection. The general average level of drought expected will be ``near-normal dry'', while the maximum drought level expected will …

Chronotherapy aims to maximise treatment efficacy while minimising side effects by scheduling treatment according to personal biological rhythms. In recent years, randomised clinical trials (RCTs) have been conducted to evaluate whether scheduled blood pressure interventions can improve patient outcomes. However, reports of time-of-day effects have attracted rebuttals and engendered methodological debate. A perfectly controlled chronotherapy trial (i.e., a trial that assesses the effect of assigning time of intervention) will never be feasible in the real world; yet some factors may be more critical to consider and control for than others. This phenomenological arts-based research sought the understanding of the implications and effects of the current immigration policies on the daily lives of Los Angeles County residents. The research question includes: What are the experiences & impacts of the immigration policies on residents of LA County? By centering the voices of Angelenos, this research aims to illuminate the ways immigration policies shape daily experiences, sense of safety, family and community relationships, and overall well-being, while amplifying narratives that are often underrepresented in traditional policy analysis.
