The "essential functions thesis" is one of the most famous structural arguments in the field of federal courts. The thesis, which has been endorsed by a number of prominent scholars and the executive branch, posits that there are implicit, structural limits on Congress's authority to "strip" the Supreme Court of its appellate jurisdiction. Court-stripping, the thesis contends, is not allowed if it would undermine the essential functions of the Court-in particular, maintaining the supremacy and uniformity of federal law. Bacterial organisms can “talk” with one another on a colony-wide scale using a communication system known as quorum-sensing (QS) via chemical signals. These signals are produced at a basal rate throughout the life of the bacteria and are classified as autoinducers, which diffuse across the cell membrane. Once the critical concentration is reached, they begin to diffuse back into the cell and initiate a phenotypic change. As these signals exist outside the membrane of their producer, they are also accessible to other organisms. Research was done through interviews with K-12 superintendents from various Ohio public school districts, following a review of the current literature available on this topic. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) remains a global health concern due to its high mortality and morbidity. In this study, we combined ligand-based pharmacophore modeling (LBPM) with structure-based virtual screening (SBVS) to identify novel inhibitors targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Ligands from the MolPort database were screened via docking and molecular dynamics simulations at the receptor-binding domain (RBD). Four compounds showed promising docking scores (-8.7 to -6.4 kcal/mol) and dynamic stability (root mean square deviation < 5 Å). In vitro assays confirmed that compounds C3 (IC50 = 0.03 µM) and C4 (IC50 = 10.4 µM) effectively inhibited spike-ACE2 binding with low cytotoxicity (CC50 > 100 µM). These findings show the efficacy of the LBPM technique and highlight 1H-pyrazol-5-ol derivatives as potential building blocks for developing new antiviral agents against SARS-CoV-2.

Pathogens survive by balancing metabolic demands with environmental challenges that shape their virulence and adaptability. Shigella flexneri, a highly infectious human pathogen responsible for severe diarrheal disease worldwide, utilizes branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolism to withstand stress conditions encountered within the host environment. In this study, we explored the Shigella isoleucine catabolism pathway by knocking out four genes in the S. flexneri isoleucine catabolic pathway (ilvE, fadA, fadD, and acnB) and examining their metabolism and virulence. We found that the ilvE and acnB mutants displayed reduced metabolic activity and smaller plaque size, while the fadD mutant showed decreased invasion. In …

This essay argues that Trump’s triumph in the 2024 presidential contest represents the consolidation of an oligarchical authoritarian project, backed by a multi-class and (surprisingly, for some) multi-racial electorate. It brought intensified state and freelance attacks on immigrants, labor unions, women, LGBTQ+ people, journalists, civil servants, assorted “political enemies,” and other groups that the MAGA movement targets. It is institutionalizing authoritarian governance structures in ways that will be exceedingly difficult to undo. The paper first addresses the experience of growing up in the shadow of fascism. Neither Academy Nor Convent: Reconciling Religious And Feminist Readings Of Mary Astell, Hannah E. Brown

Mary Astell is frequently interpreting through competing frameworks: as either a feminist advocate of women’s rational autonomy or a religious conservative committed to Anglican orthodoxy. This division reflects a broader tendency in Astell scholarship to separate her intellectual, moral, and theological commitments into distinct and often conflicting domains. This paper argues that such fragmentation is not grounded in Astell’s own philosophy but is instead the result of interpretive assumptions—particularly the view that intellectual autonomy and religious obedience are incompatible. Across alphabetic writing systems, orthographies provide only partial cues to prosody, making prosodic sensitivity an important component of skilled reading. In English, readers must infer lexical stress and rhythm from opaque spelling patterns while silently constructing an inner voice. Two independent replications of the same randomized active control experiment (N=528 undergraduates) evaluated an orthographic prosody training in which passages were annotated with stress and rhythm markers and practiced with feedback, after which cues were reduced to a single marker to evaluate transfer. Coastal built communities and natural coastal ecosystems face similar and interrelated hazards: shoreline sediment erosion, shoreline retreat, and worsening storms, each of which is exacerbated by relative sea level rise. Living shorelines are coastal defense projects that incorporate natural habitats to provide more sustainable shoreline defense and improve the coastal ecosystem. Sepsis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, driven by a dynamic immune continuum that progresses from early hyperinflammation to profound immunosuppression. This review examines the three overlapping phases of sepsis: the inflammation-mediated cytokine storm driven by dysregulated PRR activation, NF-κB signaling, and NETosis; apoptosis-driven lymphopenia involving caspase-mediated lymphocyte death, dendritic cell dysfunction, and metabolic exhaustion; and prolonged immunoparalysis culminating in persistent inflammation, immunosuppression, and catabolism syndrome (PICS). Ability emotional intelligence (EI) and trait EI have been previously associated with heart rate variability (HRV), suggesting adaptive autonomic regulation. Emotional reactivity (ER) has also been correlated with EI, possibly because individuals with higher EI are more sensitive to emotional information. The current study used a cross-sectional design (N = 71) to examine trait and ability EI, self-reported ER, and HRV. No relationship was found between trait and ability EI, suggesting distinct underlying constructs. EI was not associated with HRV. Proactive public-safety surveillance requires deep learning systems that can detect and segment weapons reliably under real-world conditions. This research develops and evaluates a progressive, multi-phase pipeline that moves (i) from RGB object detection to pixel-level semantic segmentation and (ii) from visible-spectrum cameras to thermal imagery to improve robustness under low-light, clutter, and occlusion. Early phases establish strong detection baselines using one-stage and two-stage detectors (YOLOv5 and Faster R-CNN) for multi-class weapon localization, followed by practical optimization through pruning and ensembling to reduce false positives and computational overhead while maintaining real-time feasibility. Cranes (Gruidae) are a globally distributed clade of large, wetland-associated birds. Prior phylogenetic analyses have shown there to be two major subfamilies, Balearicinae and Gruinae, and five consistently recovered clades within Gruinae. However, the relationships among those five clades has remained contentious. In addition, little has been done to reconstruct the biogeographic history of cranes. To that end, I first inferred phylogeny using a large, nuclear dataset sampled from all 15 extant crane species and two outgroup species. Expertise, rapid decision-making, and situational awareness are key components of high performance in many areas, including basketball officiating. Traditional methods of providing feedback on performance to basketball referees rely heavily on broadcast video and rule review, which does not adequately target the perceptual-cognitive skills associated with rapid and dynamic decision-making. Patients with substance use disorder (SUD) rely heavily on the hospital emergency department (ED) for acute care and are often discharged from the ED without access to long-term recovery resources. This project explores the impact of co-located addiction treatment programs with hospital EDs on recovery outcomes of patients with SUD. A systematic literature review conducted on relevant studies indicates that co-located programs can be effective in increasing treatment initiation and maintenance, reducing ED revisits, and reducing repeated overdose in SUD patients. Abstract: Purpose Treatment of infant perianal abscesses (IPA) remains controversial, with ongoing debate between operative and non-operative management. Recurrence is common and prospective data to guide care are lacking. We performed the first multi-institutional prospective quality improvement (QI) study comparing non-operative to operative IPA management. Methods The primary endpoint was time to complete abscess resolution. Secondary endpoints included surgical intervention (incision and drainage ± fistulotomy) and abscess recurrence. Institutions were recruited through a national research collaborative. IRB approval was obtained individually. Between 2022 and 2025, we prospectively enrolled patients < 1 year of age with an abscess ≤2 cm from the anal verge. Patients with predisposing conditions (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease) were excluded. Management was determined by the treating provider, with either upfront surgical intervention (control group) or non-operative care per our QI protocol (protocol group, Figure 1). Data were collected on management prior to surgical evaluation, presentation, subsequent treatment and outcomes. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA, with p < 0.05 considered significant. Endpoints were compared between groups by non-parametric methods, with denominators based on available data. Results Fourteen institutions participated across the U.S., with a total of 288 patients (108 control, 180 protocol) enrolled. Median follow-up was 0.99 (interquartile range 0.23-3.93) and 1 (0.16-4.56) months for control and protocol groups. Abscess resolution occurred in 155 patients during follow-up (36/71 (51%) control, 119/134 (89%) protocol, p < 0.01). Median time to abscess resolution was 1.21 (0.33-4) and 1.13 (0.57-3.83) months for control and protocol groups (p=0.64). Recurrences were frequent in both cohorts (34/93 (37%) control, 62/153 (41%) protocol). Surgical intervention was significantly more common in the control group: incision and drainage were performed in 61/107 (57%) versus 19/166 (11%) and exam under anesthesia with fistulotomy in 31/106 (29%) versus 20/166 (12%) (both p< 0.01). Conclusions Time to abscess resolution was similar between patients treated with upfront surgical intervention and non-operative management according to our QI protocol. Significantly more patients underwent surgical intervention in the control group, without an impact on time to resolution. Our data support initial non-operative management of infant perianal abscesses, emphasizing antibiotics at initial presentation, sitz baths and family reassurance. Purpose/Background: ACGME emphasizes competency-based evaluation of post-graduate education. However, written evaluations using averaged Likert Scales with minimal anchoring to real experiences is a sub-optimal method of evaluating resident competence. Through qualitative research, we explored resident’s own reflections on their transition into competent physicians and attempted to identify an alternative model for resident assessment. Based on informal observations, we predicted that night float rotations in the second-year curriculum are determinative for residents to achieve competence in clinical care. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) offers the promise of dramatically reducing the risk of HIV transmission. Institutions in public health believe that PrEP is key to ending the HIV epidemic and improving access is central to this program. Prior literature has suggested that discomfort discussing sexual behaviors and STIs inhibit prescribing PrEP in primary care settings.
