Decomposition In Urban Forest Patches Across A New York-New Jersey Urbanization Gradient, Cailee Sprouse
Decomposition In Urban Forest Patches Across A New York-New Jersey Urbanization Gradient, Cailee Sprouse
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
"Urbanization causes habitat fragmentation, pollution, homogenization of soil profiles, and replacement of native flora and fauna, which can alter vital ecological processes like decomposition. It is essential to investigate the impacts urbanization may have on ecosystem functioning to better inform urban land management. Studies have shown conflicting results on the impacts of urbanization on soil decomposition rates, with some showing higher, lower, or similar decomposition rates in urban soils compared to rural soils. This study aims to investigate the effects of urbanization and soil characteristics on decomposition rates in three urban forest patches in New Jersey and New York using …
Does Self-Compassion Buffer Against The Potential Effects Of Perfectionism And Psychopathology On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury?, Natasha Bourgoin
Does Self-Compassion Buffer Against The Potential Effects Of Perfectionism And Psychopathology On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury?, Natasha Bourgoin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
University students with increased rates of reported perfectionism, anxiety, and depression, are vulnerable to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, not all students with psychological distress engage in NSSI, suggesting protective factors may help to mitigate this risk. The present study examined the relation between perfectionism and NSSI, via the mediating effects of anxiety and depression, and the moderating role of self-compassion. Participants were 338 university students (67% female; 87% White) who completed several self-report measures. Students with greater perfectionism reported higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms and, in turn, more NSSI engagement. Self-compassion and several self-compassionate domains attenuated connections between …

The Impact of the Veto on the Effectiveness of the Security Council in Contemporary International Conflicts: "An Analytical Study"
The League of Nations, which was established in 1919 after World War I to maintain peace, failed in its mission. Therefore, in 1945 the victorious allies established the United Nations through San Francisco Conference on June 25, 1945. This was followed by the establishment of the Security Council, with its primary responsibility in maintaining international peace and security. The establishment of the Security Council represented a tremendous hope for achieving world peace after the horrors of World War II. However, The …

Recovery Timeframe Is A Critical Component In Preserving Carbon Stocks In Disturbed Tropical Seagrass Meadows, Taylor Renee Condron, Timothy M. Smith, Paul H. York, Nicholas J. Murray, Pere Masque, Michael A. Rasheed
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Seagrass meadows, though covering a small percentage of the ocean floor, play a critical role in marine carbon sequestration. However, the mechanisms behind this role remain uncertain due to challenges in mapping seagrass extent and flux, accounting for spatial variation in carbon storage, and incorporating site-specific histories. This study investigates the effects of short-term (≤10 years) seagrass loss on sediment carbon stocks within a large seagrass meadow in the Great Barrier Reef region. Using remote sensing data to construct a seagrass recovery timeline, combined with field sampling and assessments of ecological factors, we found higher sediment organic carbon in areas …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Artificial Intelligence, particularly machine learning (ML) algorithms, plays a crucial role in detecting cyberattacks, including anomalies and intrusions. However, machine learning models trained on imbalanced cybersecurity datasets often struggle to accurately detect minority data instances and potential threats, thereby weakening overall system security. Despite extensive research, a persistent challenge is the inadequate explanation for model predictions concerning minority data classes. This study aims to address these limitations by developing a generative AI-based approach to manage minority classes in anomaly detection, incorporating concept drift handling and explainability analysis. We introduce an over-sampling technique, CGGReaT, designed to enhance the presence of minority …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Despite the great potential of Gelatin Methacryloyl (GelMA) microneedles (MNs) for minimally invasive drug delivery and interstitial fluid extraction, their performance under realistic insertion conditions and across diverse geometrical and mechanical parameters has remained uncharacterized. In this study, dynamic and static finite-element analyses were conducted for the first time to compare three types of crosslinked GelMA MNs: conical, pyramidal, and tapered-conical with and without base support. Insertion force, von Mises stress, and safety factors were evaluated at insertion velocities of 2-6 m/s under varying crosslinking times and polymer concentrations. The tapered-conical geometry demonstrated the best overall mechanical reliability, combining moderate …

Objective: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterised by progressive degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons and their motor units (MUs). MU loss is compensated by collateral sprouting and reinnervation of muscle fibres. There is limited information about the properties of these surviving MUs as these processes take place. High-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) decomposition enables non-invasive analysis of individual MU firing behaviour during maximal voluntary contractions and assess their changes with ALS progression. Methods: Thirty-nine individuals with ALS (24 men; mean age 63 ± 16 years) completed up to five visits (interval 20.0 ± 7.9 weeks). Tibialis anterior HD-sEMG recordings …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Intrusion detection systems (IDS) monitor and detect malicious activity and unauthorized access that may compromise systems. Traditional IDS approaches send data to a central server for analysis, raising privacy concerns as data owners lose control over security. Federated Learning (FL) offers a privacy-preserving alternative by allowing local devices to process their data and generate models without sharing raw data. These local models are aggregated centrally to form a comprehensive model with performance comparable to centralized systems. This paper reviews FL-based IDS research, and is the first review paper to focus on privacy-preserving techniques collectively known as privacy-preserving Federated Learning (PPFL) …

SummaryBackground and AimsDietary nitrate and nitrite may have source-dependent effects on liver health: plant-sourced nitrate may confer hepatoprotective benefits via its conversion to nitric oxide, whereas nitrate and nitrite from animal foods, processed meats, or contaminated drinking water may promote liver injury via their conversion to N-nitrosamines. We aimed to examine associations between source-specific nitrate and nitrite intakes and incident metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in two large cohorts. Secondary aims were to assess associations with liver MRI biomarkers and to evaluate whether nitric oxide-pathway gene variants modify associations with plant-sourced nitrate/nitrite.MethodsWe analysed 53,854 participants from the Danish Diet, …

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) systems’ reliable operation under variable load conditions is a significant challenge because of voltage fluctuations, transient variations, and the high computational requirements of sophisticated control techniques like intelligent and model predictive controllers. Even while these state-of-the-art methods provide great precision, complexity and cost often limit their real-time applicability, underscoring the need for a simpler but efficient control solution. To achieve effective voltage regulation in PEMFC systems, this study suggests a DC–DC buck converter in conjunction with a comparator-based proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control technique. In order to provide stable operation under both constant and changing load …

This study compared five solvents - urea, carbonate-bicarbonate, citrate, phosphate, and water - for their ability to extract proteins from beech (BM) (Hypsizygus marmoreus) and Swiss brown (SB) (Agaricus bisporus) mushrooms. Using mass spectrometry-based proteomics and bioinformatics, we found that urea produced the highest total protein identifications by data-dependent acquisition at 1% false discovery rate (FDR): BM: 1739, SB: 1907; and by data-independent acquisition: BM: 1969, SB: 2172 proteins, especially enriching cytosolic and ribosomal proteins. Carbonate-bicarbonate favoured the extraction of metabolic and translational proteins, while citrate targeted extracellular and membrane-associated proteins related to cell wall dynamics. Phosphate-enriched catalytically active proteins, …

A High-Throughput Assay For Monitoring And Quantifying Amyloid-Β Accumulation And Clearance In Alzheimer's Disease Cell Models, Ajish Ariyath, Fraulein Denise Arigo, Anna Fyfe, W. M.A.D.Binosha Fernando, Ralph Martins, Prashant Bharadwaj
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Amyloidogenic proteins, such as amyloid-β (Aβ), self-assemble into cross-β fibrils whose accumulation is central to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Measuring Aβ aggregation and clearance in living cells remains challenging using current cell-based assays, which are often low-throughput or not suited for real-time monitoring. This study aimed to (1) develop a robust, quantitative, and scalable fluorescence-based assay using Amytracker to monitor Aβ accumulation and clearance in an Aβ-producing neuronal cell model, and (2) validate its utility for mechanistic studies and therapeutic screening. We established a plate-based fluorescence assay using Amytracker in MC65 neuronal AD model expressing the Amyloid precursor protein C-terminal fragment …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Alterations in plasma sphingomyelin (SM) levels have been reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD), pointing to disturbances in lipid metabolism that may contribute to disease pathogenesis. Neuronal damage in early AD triggers tau release into central and peripheral systems. Despite influence from peripheral contributions, alterations in plasma total-tau (T-tau) remain valuable in indicating AD-related neurodegeneration. Investigating relationships between SM metabolism and tau release during preclinical AD may uncover important biochemical processes and support advancing early non-invasive detection and treatment approaches. This cross-sectional study investigated cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults from the KARVIAH cohort, grouped by cortical amyloid-β (Aβ) status through positron …

Growth anomalies (GAs) are coral diseases characterised by tumour-like skeletal lesions reported globally, yet their causes remain poorly understood. Microorganisms are integral to coral health, but the role of bacterial communities in GAs remains unclear. We investigated an outbreak of GAs in Isopora palifera at the Cocos (Keeling) Islands using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to compare bacterial communities of GA-affected and asymptomatic corals, surrounding water and potential pollution sources. Significant differences in bacterial beta diversity were observed across sites, with an interaction between location and coral health status. Coral and water samples hosted distinct microbial communities, but there was no …

NRAS mutations occur in 10%–30% of cutaneous melanomas and are associated with high tumor mutational burden. Mutant NRAS signaling drives aberrant cell growth and proliferation, in part, through activation of the RAF–MEK-ERK1/2 kinase pathway; however, targeted therapies to this pathway have limited effectiveness in patients with NRAS mutant melanoma. The role of other targetable signaling pathways in NRAS mutant melanoma is poorly characterized. Here, we demonstrated that one isoform of diacylglycerol kinase, diacylglycerol kinase eta (DGKη), a lipid signaling regulator, was highly expressed in NRAS mutant melanoma patient samples. Knockdown of DGKH in NRAS mutant melanoma cell lines resulted in …

Much has been written about the important role of social support networks (SSNs) for the well-being of older adults, encompassing their social, emotional and practical needs. Less is known about what happens to the SSNs of older people when they migrate, and even fewer studies have examined the impact of different forms of capital on these networks. Drawing on ethnographic interviews and participant observation with 22 older Vietnamese migrants in Australia (2020–21), this paper explores the influence of different forms of social, cultural, economic and symbolic capital on their SSNs. Data analysis comprised egocentric social network analysis of the connections …

Introduction: Strenuous military activities, such as Special Forces (SF) selection courses, are known to involve high physical loads in the presence of food and sleep deprivation, which can have detrimental impacts on physical performance. Understanding the magnitude of performance deficit and the time required for recovery associated with these events, is important for injury prevention and maintaining operational readiness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in physical performance in response to the Australian SF Selection Course (SF-SC) and to monitor recovery throughout 8 weeks following the course. Materials and Methods: Ninety-three healthy male participants (age: 28 …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Understanding how pain manifests in people living with dementia can facilitate pain management but evidence from large real-world studies is limited. Through digitally compiled large number of pain assessments, we explore how behavioural indicators manifest across all widely used domains of pain assessment. Methods: This is a population based observational study with data from aged care homes across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Pain assessments were conducted over a period of 5.3 years in 89 230 residents living with advanced dementia. The primary outcome was to determine pain indicator occurrence across pain levels and explore their predictive …

Software development is a collaborative activity that depends on effective teamwork, shared understanding, and coordinated use of development practices and tools. While these aspects are well studied in professional environments, they are less frequently examined within software engineering education. This study investigates how students collaborate in group projects, focusing on collaborative practices, tool usage, and their perceptions of software quality. We conducted a quantitative post-project survey with 143 second-year undergraduate students enrolled in a software development course. The results show that students actively share information and often establish team norms to support coordination and collaboration. However, students face challenges in …

Cyber-physical systems allow digital control systems to interact with the physical world using sensors and actuators. They are increasingly being used to automate critical infrastructure, where software faults can have dire consequences. Due to the complex nature and unpredictability of these systems, their resilience is often tested using a technique called fuzzing, which generates quasi-random sequences of sensor and actuator manipulations with the goal of forcing a system into unsafe states. However, there is currently no way of determining which manipulations of a test case cause a failure without systematically removing each one and re-running the test, which can be …

Android malware detection approaches commonly use APIs and permissions as features for classifying malware. However, since the release of the first Android operating system in 2008, the Android framework has undergone numerous version updates. The evolution of the Android framework over time has led to changes in APIs and permissions, including deprecations and replacements. These changes can result in inaccurate characterization of Android malware, thereby affecting performance of malware detectors. There is a lack of methods to mitigate the impact of Android framework evolution on malware detection. To fill this gap, we conduct a systematic study of the impact of …

Middle East Journal of Communication Studies
This study aims to provide a critical and in-depth analysis of Western media coverage of the Gaza War (2023–2024) through a comparative content analysis of three major international news channels: BBC, CNN, and Fox News, across three consecutive time phases. The research is grounded in a dual theoretical framework that combines Noelle-Neumann’s Spiral of Silence theory (1974) and the Selective Belief System (SBS) model (Lord et al., 1979), employing a mixed quantitative–qualitative methodology applied to a sample of 240 televised news items covering the period from October 2023 to May 2024.
The findings reveal a clear dominance of …
