Philosophy In Science: Can Philosophers Of Science Permeate Through Science And Produce Scientific Knowledge?, Thomas Pradeu, Maël Lemoine, Mahdi Khelfaoui, Yves Gingras
Presidential Fellows Articles and Research
Most philosophers of science do philosophy ‘on’ science. By contrast, others do philosophy ‘in’ science (PinS), that is, they use philosophical tools to address scientific problems and to provide scientifically useful proposals. Here, we consider the evidence in favour of a trend of this nature. We proceed in two stages. First, we identify relevant authors and articles empirically with bibliometric tools, given that PinS would be likely to infiltrate science and thus to be published in scientific journals (‘intervention’), cited in scientific journals (‘visibility’), and sometimes recognized as a scientific result by scientists (‘contribution’). We show that many central figures …

Aim: Hydrogen sulfide and nitricoxide possess cytoprotective activity and in vivo, they are generated from exogenous sodium hydrosulfide and L-arginine respectively. Cisplatin is a major chemotherapeutic agent used to treat cancer and has a high incidence of nephrotoxicity as a side effect. The study aim was to explore the effects of NaHS and L-arginine or their combination on cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Methods: Wistar Kyoto rats were given a single intraperitoneal dose of cisplatin (5 mg/kg) followed either by NaHS (56 μmol/kg, i. p.), L-arginine (1.25 g/L in drinking water) or their combination daily for 28-days. Post-mortem plasma, urine …

Bhakti: Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat

Education is the main key to human resource development, enabling individuals to improve their abilities and skills in the formal and non-formal domains, compete, and develop potential in the world of work. However, significant challenges arise for higher education graduates, where some of them experience open unemployment because they have not been fully absorbed in the labor market. This research is focused on the concept of human resource development inclusiveness in the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesian Higher Education. This study used a literature study approach, referring to previously published research. The analysis was conducted to explore the extent …

Who Authors Social Science? Demographics And The Production Of Knowledge, Jeffrey W. Lockhart, Molly M. King, Christin Munsch
Sociology
Author demographics are of key epistemic importance in science—shaping the approaches to and contents of research—especially in social scientific knowledge production, yet we know very little about who produces social scientific publications. We fielded an original demographic survey of nearly 20,000 sociology, economics, and communication authors in the Web of Science from 2016–2020. Our results include not only details about gender and race/ethnicity but also the first descriptive statistics on social science authors’ sexuality, disability, parental education, and employment characteristics. We find authorship in the social sciences looks very different from other measures of disciplinary membership like who holds PhDs …

During the pandemic, learning policies have transformed face-to-face to online-based learning. Technology and information play a crucial role in learning infrastructure, sources of teaching materials, tools, learning facilities, and learning media. The activeness of parents in accompanying children dramatically influences the effectiveness of learning activities, which ultimately contributes to maximum results. This research explored the characteristics of parental assistance and the problems that arose in online learning of Citizenship Education subjects in Jaya Mekar Padalarang Village. The results show that the home learning policy is considered burdensome by parents. Some reasons include difficulty managing time between working and guiding children, …
No Self: Consciousness, Life, And Value, Jiawei Ma
No Self: Consciousness, Life, And Value, Jiawei Ma
Philosophy Honors Projects
The problem of personal identity has been an ongoing debate in the history of philosophy for thousands of years. This thesis examines personal identity from a variety of philosophical approaches. I begin with the historical assumption made by Descartes and Locke that people have a 'self' because they have successive consciousness over time. I argue that no 'self' exists as a coherent entity because consciousness, which makes up the self, exists as separate pieces. By exploring the weakness of defining the self as consciousness, I argue that society is the efficient cause and final cause of personal identity. By studying …

How And Why Foster Care Impacts Maltreated Youths' School Performance, Mallory Constantine
How And Why Foster Care Impacts Maltreated Youths' School Performance, Mallory Constantine
Lincy Institute Events
Youth mistreated within the foster care system are more likely to miss school as compared to non-maltreated peers. A single report of child maltreatment has a rapid and negative effect on school attendance and causes serious, long-term effects on school performance. A report of maltreatment substantiated by the department of family and child services removes a youth from a foster home and places the child in an alternative setting. These disruptions in foster care often result in additional problems with school behavior, achievement, and attendance. This lecture will explore how disruptions in foster care affect school behavior and performance and …

A Shift Of Inheritance Tradition In Batak Migrant Communities In Yogyakarta, Setiati Widihastuti, Iffah Nurhayati, Puji Wulandari Kuncorowati, Chandra Dewi Puspitasari
Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan
This article examines the shift in customary inheritance in the Batak community that migrated to Yogyakarta. Traditionally, among the Batak people, the patrilineal system is a cultural heritage still preserved today. The enactment of the patrilineal system is one of the causes of the unequal position of Batak women's inheritance rights because only men have the right to become heirs. Interaction with people of different ethnicities, customs, and customs in overseas places not only expands the horizons of Batak nomads but also allows them to change their point of view so that leaving the roots of Batak customs will be …
