Embracing Ai With Integrity: Recommendations For Authors And Reviewers At American Business Review, Subroto Roy, Kamal Upadhyaya May 2024

Embracing Ai With Integrity: Recommendations For Authors And Reviewers At American Business Review, Subroto Roy, Kamal Upadhyaya

American Business Review

As Editors of the American Business Review (ABR), we are navigating a complex landscape as the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into academic research unfolds. This digital transformation era offers remarkable opportunities yet poses significant challenges, particularly in educational contexts. As teachers, we've all observed a surge in AI usage among students where outputs often appear coherent initially but may lack depth or relevance to the class content. Many of these instances underscore critical aspects of AI, such as the "black box" problem, where the decision-making processes of AI systems are opaque, making it difficult for users to understand …

Establishing New Links Between Hrm Practices And Knowledge Workers’ Retention In Healthcare Sector: Knowledge Sharing Generating Moderating Effects, Riya Gupta, Rachna Agrawal, Arti Gupta

American Business Review

Knowledge sharing is the fundamental measure through which knowledge workers can significantly contribute to innovation and eventually the competitive advantage of the organization. Drawing upon the knowledge-based view of firms, the present study aims to examine the moderating role of knowledge sharing on the relationship between HRM practices and knowledge workers’ retention in the healthcare sector. After the COVID impact, healthcare knowledge workers have become a point for wide scholarly discussion and appropriate HRM practices should be implemented to amplify their probability of a longer stay in the organization. Hence, this research has incorporated PLS-SEM for empirical investigation which is …

To Sue Or Not To Sue?: Foreign-Sounding Ceo Name And Class-Action Lawsuits, Gajanan Ganji, Arati Kale, Devendra Kale May 2024

To Sue Or Not To Sue?: Foreign-Sounding Ceo Name And Class-Action Lawsuits, Gajanan Ganji, Arati Kale, Devendra Kale

American Business Review

In this paper, we investigate if the perceived name-based ethnicity of CEOs has any relationship with the likelihood of shareholder class-action lawsuits. Using machine learning algorithms on CEO names, we develop an objective proxy of name-based ethnicity and find that firms managed by ‘foreign-sounding’ CEOs exhibit a lower likelihood of class-action lawsuits. Our results are robust to matched sample analysis, Heckman two-stage selection, alternate model specifications as well as use of an alternate proxy. We further find that succession of a foreign-sounding CEO by a non-foreign-sounding CEO increases the likelihood of class-action lawsuits. Our paper has important implications for firms, …

Designing Efficient And Equitable Freight Services Markets For Sustainable Economic Performance, Arim Park, Mark Rodgers, Soohyun Cho May 2024

Designing Efficient And Equitable Freight Services Markets For Sustainable Economic Performance, Arim Park, Mark Rodgers, Soohyun Cho

American Business Review

Despite the indispensability of freight trucking services and truckers’ role as critical stakeholders in supply chains, relatively little attention has been paid to analyzing small independent truckers’ roles. Shippers often prefer working with larger trucking companies to the detriment of smaller independent truckers, who must grapple with an inherently disadvantageous job market. Furthermore, in the presence of uncertainty or peak demand periods, trucker shortages can pose significant economic challenges for shippers and downstream customers. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework to address these challenges in efforts to enhance the sustainability of the freight service industry. We formulate and …

Equity Returns Around Extreme Loss: A Stochastic Event Approach, Xiaomin Guo, Huijian Dong, Gary A. Patterson May 2024

Equity Returns Around Extreme Loss: A Stochastic Event Approach, Xiaomin Guo, Huijian Dong, Gary A. Patterson

American Business Review

We define an extreme loss event as a daily return at the left tail of negative two standard deviations of all daily returns for a specific stock. Prior studies focus on the relationship between extreme losses and specific anticipated announcements. Our study identifies the extreme loss events after they are randomly realized, and examines the return patterns of the equities in question on stochastic event setups. We investigate the daily returns of 2,651 stocks traded in the U.S. equity markets and identified 217,990 extreme loss events from the 1950s to early 2019. Our findings show that after an extreme loss, …

Firm Type And Unconditional Conservatism: The Indian Experience With Ifrs Convergence, Debarati Basu May 2024

Firm Type And Unconditional Conservatism: The Indian Experience With Ifrs Convergence, Debarati Basu

American Business Review

This paper investigates how private and public firms vary with respect to unconditional conservatism in financial reporting in the pre and post IFRS worlds. I consider unconditional conservatism (UC) which pre-empts the more commonly studied conditional conservatism, private firms that are differently regulated, IFRS convergence instead of the more uniform IFRS adoption and an emerging market. Using a large Indian sample of 63,000 observations across more than 15,500 firms (~41% are private) over 10 years (2011-2020), I show that private firms are less unconditionally conservative than public firms. Also, contrary to literature, IFRS convergence increases conservatism in India and reduces …

Asset Returns And Economic Uncertainty: A Cross-Country Analysis, Javed Bin Kamal, Akhand Akhtar Hossain, Omar Al Farooque, Mark Wohar May 2024

Asset Returns And Economic Uncertainty: A Cross-Country Analysis, Javed Bin Kamal, Akhand Akhtar Hossain, Omar Al Farooque, Mark Wohar

American Business Review

This paper examines the effects of economic uncertainty (idiosyncratic vis-à-vis common uncertainty) on equity, bond and housing returns across both developed and developing countries. Building on International/Intertemporal Capital Asset Pricing Model (ICAPM), we find that economic uncertainty exerts negative effects on equity, bond and housing returns. When we decompose economic uncertainty into two parts: idiosyncratic and common economic uncertainty, we find that ‘idiosyncratic uncertainty’ affects equity, bond and housing returns more negative and pronounced than ‘common’ uncertainty, where investors do not demonstrate differences in responses to the different dimensions of uncertainty. Moreover, there are weak lagged effects of economic uncertainty …

From Hr Practices To Hr Performance: A Psychological Ownership Meta-Analysis Across Cultures, Franziska M. Renz May 2024

From Hr Practices To Hr Performance: A Psychological Ownership Meta-Analysis Across Cultures, Franziska M. Renz

American Business Review

This study utilizes psychological ownership theory as theoretical framework to examine high-performance work practices, and attitudinal and behavioral performance as associations of psychological ownership on the population level. Psychological ownership describes a mindset which allows individuals to experience ownership feelings for a target (e.g., organization) regardless of legal ownership rights. Further, psychological ownership theory is integrated with and extended by contingency theory to analyze the moderation effects of societal culture. These effects have been assumed for over 30 years but hardly backed by empirical evidence from cross-cultural samples. Thus, this study analyzes data from 351,919 individuals who participated in 139 …

Urban Unemployment Duration Analysis In Post-Reform China, Soumyatanu Mukherjee, Soumya Roy May 2024

Urban Unemployment Duration Analysis In Post-Reform China, Soumyatanu Mukherjee, Soumya Roy

American Business Review

We link China’s accession to the WTO with the unemployment duration of urban jobseekers. Using data from the Rural Urban Migration in China (RUMiC) of a survey conducted in early 2008, we construct an inflow sample of those who started a period of joblessness between January 2002 and December 2007 to estimate the unemployment duration for local urban jobseekers. Deploying the Cox Proportional Hazards and Accelerated Failure Time models, we find reduced trade policy uncertainty significantly shortens unemployment duration, with hazard-rate varying across internal in-migrants and urban natives, due to variations in job accessibility and reservation wages.

A Rational Perspective Of Servant Leadership: Towards A Paradigm Shift In Servant Leader Motivation, Kevin J. Hurt, Ross Nolan May 2024

A Rational Perspective Of Servant Leadership: Towards A Paradigm Shift In Servant Leader Motivation, Kevin J. Hurt, Ross Nolan

American Business Review

Advocates of servant leadership maintain that altruism is the foundational ethic fueling the success of the servant leader. Thus, the foremost requirement of a servant leader is the possession of a concern for others above and beyond his or herself. Researchers have largely neglected the possibility that servant leaders may be, at least partially, motivated by self-interest. We challenge the current foundational ethic attributed with servant leadership and put forth a new ethical perspective. Reviewing four motivational states, from purely other-centered to purely self-centered, we introduce a conceptual model and argue that the proper ethic to ascribe with servant leadership …

Harnessing Social Media For Climate Action In Developing Countries: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nicolas Hamelin, Passant Halawa May 2024

Harnessing Social Media For Climate Action In Developing Countries: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nicolas Hamelin, Passant Halawa

Faculty Journal Articles

Like many developing nations, Egypt is facing a climate crisis due to its agricultural dependence and the Nile Delta’s vulnerability. Despite government plans for sustainable development, recent infrastructure projects have resulted in large-scale green space removal. Effective communication about environmental issues can spark pro-environmental behavior and citizen activism. This study explores social media’s potential to bridge this gap in Egypt. Utilizing Facebook AB testing with a limited budget, we reached a significant 2.3% of Egypt’s online population (nearly 2 million users). This study explored message framing, with findings showing that rational posts resonated best while fear appeals had minimal impact. …

Freshwater scarcity, salinity, and poor soil fertility are the major challenges affecting both food and feed productions in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. Utilization of brackish water in the production of saline-tolerant fish and valuable field crops under an integrated system is promising in the maximization of yield per crop. The aim of this study, therefore, was to (1) assess the effect of saline aquaculture wastewater on the growth, yield, forage quality, and nutritive composition of sorghum seeds and (2) assess the effect of different water qualities on the survival, growth performance, and health status of Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. …

Regulation Of Piezo Channels By Membrane Lipids, Luis Octavio Romero Garcia May 2024

Regulation Of Piezo Channels By Membrane Lipids, Luis Octavio Romero Garcia

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

In cellular physiology, the transformation of energy from mechanical cues into electrical and/or chemical signals is called mechanotransduction. This ability to sense and react to external and internal mechanical forces is essential for the survival of single cell to multicellular organisms. As such, it is no surprise that mechanotransduction appeared early in the evolutionary history of life on our planet. At the cellular level, mechanotransduction is mediated by proteins and/or protein complexes that respond to mechanical stimuli in different timescales, including but not limited to changes in membrane electric potential, Ca2+ signaling, and gene expression. Among such protein complexes, mechanosensitive …

Conditional Quantization For Uniform Distributions On Line Segments And Regular Polygons, Tsianna Danielle Dominguez May 2024

Conditional Quantization For Uniform Distributions On Line Segments And Regular Polygons, Tsianna Danielle Dominguez

Theses and Dissertations

Quantization for a Borel probability measure refers to the idea of estimating a given probability by a discrete probability with support containing a finite number of elements. If in the quantization some of the elements in the support are preselected, then the quantization is called a conditional quantization. In this thesis, we have investigated the conditional quantization for the uniform distributions defined on the unit line segments and m-sided regular polygons, where m ≥ 3, inscribed in a unit circle.

Affective Life, Mobility And Unity In U.S.-Mexico Transborder Families, Aaron A. Adame Sosa May 2024

Affective Life, Mobility And Unity In U.S.-Mexico Transborder Families, Aaron A. Adame Sosa

Theses and Dissertations

There has been abundant research on transnational families and their lived realities, but most of this research focuses on analyzing family relations across long distances. This thesis examines transnational life at the borderlands and develops new frameworks for understanding family unity and separation. Using concepts from the sociology of emotions, I find that economic and opportunity inequalities structure much of transborder life and that the emotional work different family members do for the sake of their family unity is largely based on mobility privilege and the idea that the U.S. is economically better off, even as the relative poverty between …

American Perspectives On The Legitimacy Of Transgender Identities, Sethe Zachman

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This mixed-method project examines how Americans’ and Nebraskans’ perceptions of the validity of transgender identities varies by the demographic characteristics of respondents, and how these perceptions are justified. Two representative surveys are used to examine demographic associations with opinion on the cisgender and transgender binary: the 2023 American Values Atlas (AVA) from the Public Religion Research Institute (N=4,788) and the 2022 Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (NASIS) (N=934) from the Bureau of Sociological Research. A measure from the AVA data examines the degree to which respondents believe there are only two genders versus a range of gender identities. The NASIS …

Examining The Effects Of Food Supply On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Larval Performance And Settlement Potential In Delaware Bay And Mississippi Sound, James C. Klein May 2024

Examining The Effects Of Food Supply On Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Larval Performance And Settlement Potential In Delaware Bay And Mississippi Sound, James C. Klein

Master's Theses

Oyster population maintenance and growth require sufficient larval stocks capable of timely development, growth, and successful metamorphosis, whereby larval performance and settlement potential determines the capacity for a larval cohort to effectively establish into an existing population. Exogenous factors influencing larval performance include temperature, salinity, and particularly food supply. Regarding food, a sufficiently abundant and nutritionally balanced diet composed of protein, lipids, and carbohydrates is critical for successful metamorphosis. The influence of exogenous factors on Crassostrea virginica settlement potential were examined in Delaware Bay and Mississippi Sound by incorporating in situ environmental conditions and food supply metrics into a well-established …

Pigs in the SAL and 32 in the 50%-LPS treatment received a 3.0 …

Using Annual Forages To Replace Declining Cool-Season Grass Pasture Availability, Jonathon Matthew Jenkins May 2024

Using Annual Forages To Replace Declining Cool-Season Grass Pasture Availability, Jonathon Matthew Jenkins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As land area in grain crop production increases in the US Midwest, perennial pasture availability decreases but the demand increases. Matching the seasonal growth patterns of C3 and C4 plant species to grow forages that are complementary allows producers to fill production gaps in otherwise monoculture systems and possibly increase overall productivity. One way to fill the forage production gap of C3 grass dominated pastures is by producing a warm-season, annual forage in a separate field. However, with continual reductions in land availability, this may not be an option. Using two studies, our objectives were to improve …

Strong First Order Electroweak Phase Transitions In The Standard Model With A Real Scalar Singlet Extension, Anthony James Hooper May 2024

Strong First Order Electroweak Phase Transitions In The Standard Model With A Real Scalar Singlet Extension, Anthony James Hooper

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

The large matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe and whether the electroweak sector has always been broken are currently unanswered by the standard model (SM). One solution that addresses both these concerns is to impose a strong first order electroweak phase transition (SFOEWPT) and ensure electroweak baryogenesis occurs. Models that undergo a SFOEWPT in the early universe create bubbles of the true vacuum that expand until the universe reaches the vacuum expectation value measured today. If the phase transition is strong enough, then these bubbles may generate a detectable stochastic gravitational wave (GW).

However, the SM by itself can only perform …
