The seventh iteration of the reference genome assembly for Rattus norvegicus-mRatBN7.2-corrects numerous misplaced segments and reduces base-level errors by approximately 9-fold and increases contiguity by 290-fold compared with its predecessor. Gene annotations are now more complete, improving the mapping precision of genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomics datasets. We jointly analyzed 163 short-read whole-genome sequencing datasets representing 120 laboratory rat strains and substrains using mRatBN7.2. We defined ∼20.0 million sequence variations, of which 18,700 are predicted to potentially impact the function of 6,677 genes. We also generated a new rat genetic map from 1,893 heterogeneous stock rats and annotated transcription start sites …

Several studies have been performed on the immunomodulatory effects of yeast β-(1,3) glucan, but there is no proper evaluation of the thermal and immunomodulating properties of zymosan (ZM). Thermogravimetry analysis indicated a 54% weight loss of ZM at 270 °C. Circular dichroism showed absorption peaks in the region of 250 to 400 nm, suggesting a helical coil β-sheet configuration. XRD showed a broad peak at 2θ of 20.38°, indicating the crystalline nature, and the size was found to be 23 nm. ZM is biocompatible and showed no toxicity against L929 and RAW 264.7 cell lines (cell viability > 90%). Immunomodulatory …

Quantum Computation Using Large Spin Qudits, Sivaprasad Thattupurackal Omanakuttan Apr 2024

Quantum Computation Using Large Spin Qudits, Sivaprasad Thattupurackal Omanakuttan

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This dissertation explores quantum computation using qudits encoded into large spins, emphasizing the concept of quantum co-design to harness the unique capabilities of physical platforms for enhanced quantum information processing. First, we delve into the generation of high-fidelity universal gate sets for quantum computation with qudits. Leveraging principles from quantum optimal control, Rydberg physics, and the atomic structure of alkaline-earth atoms, we propose protocols for high-fidelity universal gate sets in the ground state of 87Sr with reasonable experimental parameters. Next, we analyze schemes to encode a qubit in the large spin qudits for fault-tolerant quantum computation (FTQC). By comprehending …

Malpractice Litigation Related To Management Of Varicocele: A Legal Database Review, Eric Zhou, Nicholas Sellke, Helen Sun, Kimberly Tay, Sherry Mortach, Ramy Abou Ghayda, Aram Loeb, Nannan Thirumavalavan

Student Scholarship

There have been studies that examined litigation procedures stemming from the management and treatment of various urological issues [6, 8]. Varicocele is a common urologic condition and can be associated with pain, subfertility, and infertility, thus greatly impacting patient well-being and quality of life. It has a prevalence of 15% in the general male population and up to 35% in males with infertility [9]. Varicocele has a range of treatment options, from observation to pain management to surgical correction. To our knowledge, no legal claims database investigation into varicocele cases exists. Elucidating the factors that go into varicocele litigation could …

Is Postnatal Acetaminophen Therapy Problematic For Preterm Infants?, Richard J. Martin, Anna Maria Hibbs

Faculty Scholarship

In this issue, Srajer et al. report on the neurodevelopmental outcomes at 18–21 months of preterm infants treated with acetaminophen in the NICU.1 Their study shows no evidence of neurological harm from acetaminophen, after adjusting for known risk factors for neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI). Temporal trends in both pain and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) management have led to an increase in acetaminophen use in the NICU in recent years, resulting in a crucial need for long-term safety data in this vulnerable population.

Response Of Tomato Seed Germination To Several Extraction Techniques And Magnetic Field Exposure Treatments, Visira Deva Shakina, Anne Nuraini, Anne Nurbaity Apr 2024

Response Of Tomato Seed Germination To Several Extraction Techniques And Magnetic Field Exposure Treatments, Visira Deva Shakina, Anne Nuraini, Anne Nurbaity

Jurnal Kultivasi

The superior seeds are indicated by clean, good germination rate, pest and disease-free. One of the problems in providing superior tomato seeds is the presence of pulp attached to the tomato seeds, leading to less clean of seed. To remove the muscus on tomato seeds, the seeds have to be extracted. Other than seeds extraction, seeds exposure also could optimize seeds growth by increasing the metabolism of the tomato. The aim of this research is to determine the best extraction technique and magnetic field exposure for obtaining high tomato seeds germination. The complete random design used in this research consist …

The Experiences Of Stress And Resilience On The Allostatic Load Of Transgender And Gender Non-Binary Individuals During Secondary School: How Their Experiences Can Inform Best Practices, Kimberly Skye Ferina Apr 2024

The Experiences Of Stress And Resilience On The Allostatic Load Of Transgender And Gender Non-Binary Individuals During Secondary School: How Their Experiences Can Inform Best Practices, Kimberly Skye Ferina

Theses & Dissertations

Transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender non-binary (TGNCNB) students face many challenges in secondary school that increase their allostatic load and can lead to allostatic overload. Various aspects of their identity cultivate stress, compounded by variables that impact them throughout the day. TGNCNB youth are at a greater risk of bullying and harassment than their cisgendered peers and are at a greater risk of employing harmful mitigating behaviors and suicidal ideation. TGNCNB youth spend most of their day in the school setting, and there is limited research on this population that identifies what schools can do to support this population better. …

The Mind And Body Fitness Program: The Challenges And Rewards Of Implementing A Service Learning Course, Avery R. Thompson, Zoey Ojukwu

Eagle Showcase: Excellence in Service-Learning (Archived)

Service-learning courses offer a new dynamic to student learning, as the relationship between students and instructors has changed, requiring shared power and equal participation rather than a hierarchical transfer of influence. Students new to service-learning courses require a new kind of support from faculty within the field. This necessitates the ability of course instructors to create an opportunity for students to become equally contributing members of a community program.

Drawing from the P.A.R.E model, the service-learning course merges students' experiences, guiding them through practice regimens, project implementation, and reflection activities to connect service experiences with course content. This reflective process …

It has been presumed that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) joint pain is related to inflammation in the synovium; however, recent studies reveal that pain scores in patients do not correlate with synovial inflammation. We developed a machine-learning approach (graph-based gene expression module identification or GbGMI) to identify an 815-gene expression module associated with pain in synovial biopsy samples from patients with established RA who had limited synovial inflammation at arthroplasty. We then validated this finding in an independent cohort of synovial biopsy samples from patients who had early untreated RA with little inflammation. Single-cell RNA sequencing analyses indicated that most of …

Rare Genetic Variation In Fibronectin 1 (Fn1) Protects Against Apoeε4 In Alzheimer's Disease, Prabesh Bhattarai, Michael E Belloy, Et Al. Apr 2024

Rare Genetic Variation In Fibronectin 1 (Fn1) Protects Against Apoeε4 In Alzheimer's Disease, Prabesh Bhattarai, Michael E Belloy, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) significantly increases in individuals carrying the APOEε4 allele. Elderly cognitively healthy individuals with APOEε4 also exist, suggesting the presence of cellular mechanisms that counteract the pathological effects of APOEε4; however, these mechanisms are unknown. We hypothesized that APOEε4 carriers without dementia might carry genetic variations that could protect them from developing APOEε4-mediated AD pathology. To test this, we leveraged whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data in the National Institute on Aging Alzheimer's Disease Family Based Study (NIA-AD FBS), Washington Heights/Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP), and Estudio Familiar de Influencia Genetica en Alzheimer (EFIGA) cohorts and …

Lithological Controls On The Timing Of Strath Terrace Staircase Formation In A Collisional Mountain Belt, Jesse R. Zondervan, Martin Stokes, Sarah J. Boulton, Matt W. Telfer, Anne E. Mather, Mhamed A. Belfoul

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In mountain belts, strath terrace staircases serve as markers for deriving river incision rates and erosional patterns. Distinguishing between terrace patterns influenced by external perturbations like changes in climate and tectonics and those driven by internal dynamics including feedbacks between topography, erosion and sediment transport remains challenging. We demonstrate that in a collisional mountain belt, lithology can act as a first-order control on the spatial and temporal scales of strath terrace formation. Here, we investigate the role of lithology in modulating internal dynamics and the formation of strath terraces in the Mgoun River catchment of the High Atlas in Morocco, …
