The Experiences Of Stress And Resilience On The Allostatic Load Of Transgender And Gender Non-Binary Individuals During Secondary School: How Their Experiences Can Inform Best Practices, Kimberly Skye Ferina
The Experiences Of Stress And Resilience On The Allostatic Load Of Transgender And Gender Non-Binary Individuals During Secondary School: How Their Experiences Can Inform Best Practices, Kimberly Skye Ferina
Theses & Dissertations
Transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender non-binary (TGNCNB) students face many challenges in secondary school that increase their allostatic load and can lead to allostatic overload. Various aspects of their identity cultivate stress, compounded by variables that impact them throughout the day. TGNCNB youth are at a greater risk of bullying and harassment than their cisgendered peers and are at a greater risk of employing harmful mitigating behaviors and suicidal ideation. TGNCNB youth spend most of their day in the school setting, and there is limited research on this population that identifies what schools can do to support this population better. …
Retrospective Data Analysis To Improve No-Show Rates In An Adult Oncology Clinic, Aaron Jones
Retrospective Data Analysis To Improve No-Show Rates In An Adult Oncology Clinic, Aaron Jones
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
Abstract
The purpose of this DNP clinical project was to conduct a retrospective data analysis on no-show patients at a large, urban, academic oncology clinic to determine those factors that may be contributing to the missed appointment and to suggest ways to improve the process that will benefit the patients and the practice. Data abstraction was performed via chart review for no-show visits for the preceding 6 months from the time of analysis (January 2023 to June 2023). Key information collected included date of missed appointments, age, gender, primary language, race, insurance provider, marital status, new patient visits versus follow-up …

The Mind And Body Fitness Program: The Challenges And Rewards Of Implementing A Service Learning Course, Avery R. Thompson, Zoey Ojukwu
Eagle Showcase: Excellence in Service-Learning (Archived)
Service-learning courses offer a new dynamic to student learning, as the relationship between students and instructors has changed, requiring shared power and equal participation rather than a hierarchical transfer of influence. Students new to service-learning courses require a new kind of support from faculty within the field. This necessitates the ability of course instructors to create an opportunity for students to become equally contributing members of a community program.
Drawing from the P.A.R.E model, the service-learning course merges students' experiences, guiding them through practice regimens, project implementation, and reflection activities to connect service experiences with course content. This reflective process …

It has been presumed that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) joint pain is related to inflammation in the synovium; however, recent studies reveal that pain scores in patients do not correlate with synovial inflammation. We developed a machine-learning approach (graph-based gene expression module identification or GbGMI) to identify an 815-gene expression module associated with pain in synovial biopsy samples from patients with established RA who had limited synovial inflammation at arthroplasty. We then validated this finding in an independent cohort of synovial biopsy samples from patients who had early untreated RA with little inflammation. Single-cell RNA sequencing analyses indicated that most of …

Rare Genetic Variation In Fibronectin 1 (Fn1) Protects Against Apoeε4 In Alzheimer's Disease, Prabesh Bhattarai, Michael E Belloy, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) significantly increases in individuals carrying the APOEε4 allele. Elderly cognitively healthy individuals with APOEε4 also exist, suggesting the presence of cellular mechanisms that counteract the pathological effects of APOEε4; however, these mechanisms are unknown. We hypothesized that APOEε4 carriers without dementia might carry genetic variations that could protect them from developing APOEε4-mediated AD pathology. To test this, we leveraged whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data in the National Institute on Aging Alzheimer's Disease Family Based Study (NIA-AD FBS), Washington Heights/Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP), and Estudio Familiar de Influencia Genetica en Alzheimer (EFIGA) cohorts and …

The Association Between Neuroimaging Data And Presence Of Lateropulsion After Stroke, Jessica Nolan, Michael Bynevelt, Erin Godecke, Angela Jacques, Ferry Dharsono, Barbara Singer
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Post-stroke lateropulsion is prevalent and has been associated with varied lesion locations, but existing imaging studies are limited by small participant cohorts. Evidence to guide lateropulsion rehabilitation is also limited. Improved understanding of lesion localization associated with lateropulsion post-stroke may inform more targeted intervention approaches. Objectives: This study investigated the associations between stroke neuroimaging data and presence of lateropulsion at inpatient rehabilitation admission.
Methods: This prospective, observational study included participants aged ≥ 65 years, admitted for inpatient stroke rehabilitation. Using routinely collected clinical neuroimaging data, stroke type, location, and volume were reported, and their association with lateropulsion presence (Four-Point …

In mountain belts, strath terrace staircases serve as markers for deriving river incision rates and erosional patterns. Distinguishing between terrace patterns influenced by external perturbations like changes in climate and tectonics and those driven by internal dynamics including feedbacks between topography, erosion and sediment transport remains challenging. We demonstrate that in a collisional mountain belt, lithology can act as a first-order control on the spatial and temporal scales of strath terrace formation. Here, we investigate the role of lithology in modulating internal dynamics and the formation of strath terraces in the Mgoun River catchment of the High Atlas in Morocco, …

Species assemblage composition of marine microfossils offers the possibility to investigate ecological and climatological change on time scales inaccessible using conventional observations. Planktonic foraminifera - calcareous zooplankton - have an excellent fossil record and are used extensively in palaeoecology and palaeoceanography. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; 19,000 – 23,000 years ago), the climate was in a radically different state. This period is therefore a key target to investigate climate and biodiversity under different conditions than today. Studying LGM climate and ecosystems indeed has a long history, yet the most recent global synthesis of planktonic foraminifera assemblage composition is now …

The appellate court reversed the Supreme Court's judgment, annulling DHCR's determinations that ordered rent reductions for tenants due to decreased services from obstruction of air and light caused by an adjacent building. It found DHCR's decisions irrational as they failed to consider facts showing the landlord was not responsible for the service reduction. The court vacated the rent reduction orders, dismissing the administrative complaints, emphasizing the landlord's lack of control over the adjacent construction affecting the tenants' windows.

Dengvaxia is the first dengue vaccine recommended in the United States (U.S.). It is recommended for children aged 9–16 y with laboratory-confirmed previous dengue infection and living in areas where dengue is endemic. We conducted focus groups with parents and in-depth interviews with key informants (i.e. practicing pediatricians, physicians from immunization clinics, university researchers, and school officials) in Puerto Rico (P.R.) to examine acceptability, barriers, and motivators to vaccinate with Dengvaxia. We also carried out informal meetings and semi-structured interviews to evaluate key messages and educational materials with pediatricians and parents. Barriers to vaccination included lack of information, distrust toward …

At a time when institutions of higher education are exploring alternatives to traditional admissions testing, institutions are also seeking to better support students and prepare them for academic success. Under such an engaged model, one may seek to measure not just the accumulated knowledge and skills that students would bring to a new academic program but also their ability to grow and learn through the academic program. To help prepare students for law school before they matriculate, the JD-Next is a fully online, noncredit, 7- to 10-week course to train potential juris doctor students in case reading and analysis skills. …

Seeking A Uniform Approach To Trumpet Sound Concept, Coleman T. Scott
Seeking A Uniform Approach To Trumpet Sound Concept, Coleman T. Scott
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
One of the most challenging aspects of trumpet playing that pedagogues must teach is how to produce a professional tone. Trumpet students are often good musicians, play correct notes and rhythms, and even have proficient technique. However, many are unable to consistently produce a tone comparable to that of a professional. There are a number of methods that can be utilized to improve a student’s tone quality. In my own teaching and in the teaching of many professionals, tone concept has been used as a catalyst for the improvement of tone quality. A students’ exposure to a professional-quality trumpet tone …

CD24 is a well-characterized breast cancer (BC) stem cell (BCSC) marker. Primary breast tumor cells having CD24-negativity together with CD44-positivity is known to maintain high metastatic potential. However, the functional role of CD24 gene in triple-negative BC (TNBC), an aggressive subtype of BC, is not well understood. While the significance of CD24 in regulating immune pathways is well recognized in previous studies, the significance of CD24 low expression in onco-signaling and metabolic rewiring is largely unknown. Using CD24 knock-down and over-expression TNBC models, our in vitro and in vivo analysis suggest that CD24 is a tumor suppressor in metastatic TNBC. …
