Heart Rate Response To Maximal Exercise In A Participant With C8 Spinal Cord Injury, Jessie Hirsch, Alex Rothstein, Norbert Holowat Jr, Michele Aquino, Amerigo Rossi, John P. Handrakis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction are a common sequela after spinal cord injury (SCI) and typically impair cardiovascular responses to exercise. However, some individuals with cervical SCI (tetraplegia) and “complete” motor and sensory injury (AIS A) demonstrate the ability to increase heart rate (HR) above the limit achievable by vagal withdrawal alone (~110 bpm). PURPOSE: The purpose of this test was to highlight the unexpected HR response to a continuous graded exercise test. (GXT) in a wheelchair athlete with tetraplegia. METHODS: A 26-year-old male with tetraplegia after a SCI (classification neurological level of injury (NLI) C8, AIS A) …

Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome — Female Soccer Player, Bernie Acevedo, Nikolaos Gravvanis, Alex Rothstein, Jennifer Daily, Andreas Stamatis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
HISTORY: An 18-year-old female soccer player reported experiencing a dull ache and sensation of tightness in her right leg, accompanied by a burning pain, during a match. Post-match, she noticed tingling in the dorsal aspect of her right foot. The athlete sought consultation from a general practitioner (GP), who found no evidence of tenderness or swelling during the clinical assessment. The GP recommended rest and prescribed anti-inflammatory medication.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Persistent discomfort and significant weakness in dorsiflexion prompted the athlete to consult an orthopedic physician. Clinical examination revealed no localized pain or other symptoms. Initial radiographs were unremarkable. …

Replication Crisis In Sport And Exercise Science, Zacharias Papadakis, Jennifer Murphy
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In Sport and Exercise Science (SES), 82% of published studies report significant findings indicating these studies have a robust research design that examines true effects with high statistical power. However, small sample sizes and underpowered designs are common in SES. Related literature in psychology reports that only 37% of replicated effects yield similar results to the original. Replication studies in SES are still rare, raising concerns about the overwhelming reported significant findings despite the small sample sizes. PURPOSE: To replicate the findings of a published SES study and compare results. METHODS: Based on the criteria published by Murphy …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Caffeine is a popular ergogenic aid, potentially enhancing performance in high-intensity power movements like jumping. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed caffeine from its banned list, but the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) restricts caffeine intake (5 mg/kg). Past research has examined the effects of caffeine supplementation on vertical jumping performance, since comprises reliable physical fitness test, but mixed results were reported. PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of caffeine at the NCAA limit on vertical jump performance in real-world training conditions. METHODS: Forty collegiate Division II athletes (Male = 22) from sports like basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, …

Can Test Familiarity Improve Performance On The National Hockey League Combine? A Case Study Analysis., Katie Sell, Jamie Ghigiarelli, Adam Gonzalez, Jon Diflorio, Paul Perticone
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Test performance in athletes can be impacted by familiarity with test procedure, the environment in which testing is taking place, and perceived competency for achieving the desired outcome. However, there is a dearth of research on these factors in elite athletes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to familiarize an elite-level ice hockey player with the protocols required in the National Hockey League Combine (NHL-C) and compare these tests results to his performance on the NHL-C. METHODS: An 18-year old ice-hockey player (who was invited to the NHL-C in 2023) volunteered to complete a battery of fitness testing eight …

The Attitudes, Level Of Interest, And Knowledge Held By Physicians And Psychologists Toward Integrated Healthcare Practices And The Patient-Centered Medical Home Model, Mark Cassano, Robert A. Ditomasso, Barbara Golden, Scott D. Glassman
The Journal of Integrated Primary Care
As the healthcare system evolves, issues related to cost and access to care continue to persist. In response to this concern, integrated models of healthcare, like the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), have been developed to work toward reducing cost for both patients and providers, increasing patient access to quality care, and improving patients’ overall satisfaction with the care that they are provided. However, despite the overwhelming evidence found in the literature supporting the efficacy and benefit of these treatment models, it is unclear as to why more providers do not choose to practice and support collaborative forms of healthcare provision. …

Biopsychosocial Management Of Long Covid Fibromyalgia: Lessons From The Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Fibromyalgia Program, Joseph Harrison, Dennis Given Psy.D.
The Journal of Integrated Primary Care
The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the prevalence of chronic health concerns worldwide, leading to a new population of patients suffering from Long Covid. Patients with Long Covid often experience persistent symptoms impacting multiple organ systems, including neuroimmune and neurological manifestations. Recently, attention has grown toward Long Covid patients developing chronic widespread pain similar to fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a nociplastic pain disorder characterized by widespread pain and central sensitization with fatigue, sleep disturbances, and impairments in cognitive functioning. Given the nascent and limited research exploring new treatment options, patients need support now from biopsychosocial multi-modal pain management strategies. The Fibromyalgia Program …

An Exploration Of Self-Reported Training Needs For Anxiety Interventions Among Primary Care Behavioral Health Consultants, Katherine Buckheit, Ryan Willard, Kyle Possemato, Robyn Shepardson, Abigail Lashinsky, Jen Funderburk
The Journal of Integrated Primary Care
Introduction: Despite the need for greater training in evidence-based interventions for the treatment of anxiety in primary care behavioral health (PCBH), there are limited data on which interventions are desired by behavioral healthcare consultants (BHCs). The objective of this study was to identify which interventions BHCs desired more training in when treating anxiety in PCBH practice, and to examine if this preference was associated with theoretical orientation. Method: We conducted an online survey of PCBH providers regarding their training preferences for treatment of anxiety symptoms. The final sample comprised 291 BHCs recruited from e-mail listservs of national professional organizations. Providers …

Nutrients
The Utah Hydroponic solutions for monocots and dicots have been developed and refined using mass balance principles coupled with tissue analysis from studies in 25-cm deep, continuously aerated, liquid hydroponics where there is no absorption or desorption with media.
These solutions provide guidelines for irrigation of soilless substrates, but adjustments may need to be made to account for the significant cation exchange capacity and thus nutrient absorption and desorption with the substrates.
These recipes were developed for greenhouse conditions with ambient CO2 and about 40% humidity. This results in a water use efficiency of about 3 grams per Liter. …

Improving Parent And Daycare Staff Confidence In Monitoring Developmental Milestones Through Education Of Pediatric Development, Reagin Hunter
Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium
The most effective approach to identifying developmental delays involves a combination of developmental monitoring by all caregivers involved in the child’s life, ongoing communication among caregivers, and the administration of formal developmental screenings. This quality improvement capstone project focused on enhancing the education and resources available to daycare teachers regarding developmental milestones, recognizing red flags in development, communicating with parents, and determining appropriate next steps if milestones are missed or therapy services are required. A resource binder was created for each daycare classroom alongside a presentation given to educate staff on developmental topics by age. Evaluation of daycare staff perception …

Optimization Of A Push Notification System To Improve First Case Delays: A Quality Improvement Project, Chelsea Secondino, Samantha Tortora
Optimization Of A Push Notification System To Improve First Case Delays: A Quality Improvement Project, Chelsea Secondino, Samantha Tortora
DNP Projects
Background
Delayed first case on time starts (FCOTS) in the operating room (OR) have a trickle-down effect throughout the day leading to wasted resources, patient dissatisfaction, and healthcare staff stress and burnout. In the local practice setting the mean FCOTS was 65%, well below the national target of 83%. Surgeons being late and missing electronic health record documentation were the most common reasons for delays. A push notification system had been implemented to improve FCOTS however few surgeons and nurses were using this technology.
Project Goals
- Develop a process and training for a push notification system for surgeons and nurses. …
