Clinical Implications Of Inaccurate Potassium Determination In Hemolyzed Pediatric Blood Specimens, Dennis J Dietzen, Ronald Jackups, Mark A Zaydman

BACKGROUND: Analysis of whole blood specimens is rapid and saves blood, but hemolysis may go undetected and compromise the accuracy of potassium measurement. We aimed to define the frequency and magnitude of error in whole blood potassium measurement.

METHODS: 34 months of whole blood and plasma potassium data were extracted from patients aged less than 2 years at the time of sample acquisition. Hemolysis was detected using the plasma "H index." The magnitude of potassium bias was estimated from the difference between paired whole blood and plasma measurement separated by less than 2 h.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) involves recurrent, pruritic wheals lasting more than 6 weeks in response to various etiologies, including unknown causality. Though most cutaneous reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine series are self-limited and of short duration, more complex presentations including chronic spontaneous urticaria have been described. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of chronic spontaneous urticaria following heterologous mRNA COVID-19 booster vaccination that includes vaccination with both forms of the mRNA vaccine. Our patient received Pfizer-BioNTech for the primary series and Moderna for the booster. After failing several therapies, our patient's urticaria was refractory even …

This dissertation charts the career of the Alaskan sled dog: how it was used as an engine of development, how it became a symbol for early American Alaska, and how it fell victim to obsolescence as newer and faster means of conveyance became available. The figure of the sled dog in the Arctic is complex. Because it was closer to the wolf in phenotype both it, and Alaska, were buffeted by the same White settler expectations and Darwinian chauvinism which afflicted its Indigenous peoples. There is a clinical need to quantify return to play when assessing athletes’ post-surgery. This study aims at developing physiological models to predict recovery time post-Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) surgery in Division 1 Football players by integration of physiological and subjective data. PURPOSE Amidst the pressure to excel in top athletic competitions, athletes frequently endure ligamentous injuries, notably ACL tears. Face masks reduce the spread of viral respiratory particles, however, their impact on respiratory physiology requires further research. Previous studies reported negative changes in gas exchange data when wearing a surgical mask, however, breath-by-breath data has not been analyzed. PURPOSE: To compare physiological changes when wearing an N95 mask and surgical mask at rest. Variables measured include oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide ventilation (VC02), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), minute ventilation (MV), and discomfort. Muscle power declines at a faster rate and demonstrates a stronger association with physical function than strength, emphasizing the growing importance of assessing muscle power. The Sit-to-Stand (STS) test is a novel test to measure lower body power that is valid and reliable, while also being portable and affordable. History: An active 78-year-old male, with a background as a recreational athlete, presented with acute onset of left foot pain, following an event of mechanical stress characterized by a popping sensation. His extensive medical history included interventions for systemic and musculoskeletal disorders, notably a carotid artery dissection and hip arthroplasty. Lifestyle factors included past smoking and minimal alcohol use. He reported a recent corticosteroid intervention of his left mid-foot for chronic discomfort.

CASE HISTORY: A 13-year-old male lacrosse athlete presented with gradual onset right ankle pain. Symptoms began at age ten, including multiple ankle sprains. The physician suspected plantar fasciitis and advised gel inserts, NSAID pain relievers, and physical therapy to no avail. The pain persisted as sports became more demanding. His performance continued to decrease, and gait became labored and disjointed, with an occasional limp. PURPOSE: Test whether a novel strategy for very fast eccentric chest press will induce higher exercise-induced muscle damage than slow eccentric chest press. In pursuit of sustained fat loss, intrinsic motivation plays a pivotal role. This study explores the impact of 4 weeks of intrinsic motivation coaching (IMC) on fat loss, following up 10 weeks later. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate whether IMC strategies during a fat-loss intervention improves sustained fat loss thereafter. Falls affect approximately 1 in 3 older adults each year [1], with recurrent fallers displaying reduced postural stability [2] and lower limb strength [3]. While it is known that low-intensity exercise with blood flow restriction (BFR) improves strength [4], it is unknown whether benefits extend to postural stability. PURPOSE: Investigate whether 5 weeks of online low-intensity resistance training combined with BFR can stimulate improvements in postural stability under dual-task conditions among adults aged 60 and above. In pursuit of sustained fat loss, intrinsic motivation plays a pivotal role. This study explores the impact of 4-weeks of intrinsic motivation coaching (IMC) on fat loss, following up 10 weeks later. Mental toughness (MT) encompasses attributes pivotal for athletic performance in the face of challenges. The effects of team-based mental skills training (MST) interventions on MT's diverse components remain insufficiently explored.
