Data Profits Vs. Privacy Rights: Ethical Concerns In Data Commerce, Amiah Armstrong

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

In today’s digital age, the collection and sale of customer data for advertising is gaining a growing number of ethical concerns. The act of amassing extensive datasets encompassing customer preferences, behaviors, and personal information raises questions of its true purpose. It is widely acknowledged that companies track and store their customer’s digital activities under the pretext of benefiting the customer, but at what cost? Are users aware of how much of their data is being collected? Do they understand the trade-off between personalized services and the potential invasion of their privacy? This paper aims to show the advantages and disadvantages …

Hormetic Modulation Of On Mtor Mitochondria Cross Talk For Mitigation Of Cellular Aging, Mahalakshmi R Apr 2024

Hormetic Modulation Of On Mtor Mitochondria Cross Talk For Mitigation Of Cellular Aging, Mahalakshmi R

Theses and Dissertations

Cellular aging is a gradual process involving structural and functional deterioration of cells. Mitochondria, the biological clock in cells, are known to play a crucial role in the progression of cell aging. According to the mitochondrial free radical theory of aging, oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria produces free radicals, such as, reactive oxygen species (ROS), which lead to oxidative stress in cells. This, in turn, results in mitochondrial dysregulation, and eventually causes degeneration of cellular components, thereby propagating cell aging. However, it is to be underscored that aging, at its core, is a multifaceted phenomenon that involves a number of …

Multivalency Of The Mdmx Acidic Domain Slims Use Different Binding Modes To Inhibit Mdmx And P53, Malissa Fenton Apr 2024

Multivalency Of The Mdmx Acidic Domain Slims Use Different Binding Modes To Inhibit Mdmx And P53, Malissa Fenton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Regulation of protein binding through autoinhibition commonly occurs via interactions involving intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs). These intramolecular interactions can directly or allosterically inhibit intermolecular protein or DNA binding, regulate enzymatic activity, and control the assembly of large macromolecular complexes. Autoinhibitory interactions mediated by protein disorder are inherently transient, making their identification and characterization challenging. In this work, we explore the structural and functional diversity of disorder-mediated autoinhibition for a variety of biological mechanisms, with a focus on the role of multivalency and effective concentration. We also discuss the evolution of disordered motifs that participate in autoinhibition using examples where sequence …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In recent years, significant attention has been directed toward evaluating the reactivity of diverse polymers to gauge their catalytic activity against hazardous chemicals. Among these polymers, pim-1 has emerged as an exceptional candidate due to its noteworthy attributes including high surface area, excellent solubility, and the capability to fine-tune the nitrile functional groups along its polymeric backbone. In this study, we explored the impact of different functional groups, such as amidoxime (ax), aldoxime (ox), and carboxylate (cooh), on the degradation of dimethyl 4-nitrophenylphosphonate (dmnp) in comparison to pure pim-1 and their respective ce(oh)4-loaded polymer composites. Remarkably, the pim-1-ax analog exhibited …

Reflecting On Preservice Teacher Technology Literacies: Survey Data And Student Artifacts To Influence Program Designs, Xin Bai Apr 2024

Reflecting On Preservice Teacher Technology Literacies: Survey Data And Student Artifacts To Influence Program Designs, Xin Bai

Publications and Research

This research investigates how Teacher Education faculty incorporate the needs, self-efficacy, and experiences of teacher candidates (TCs) into curriculum and program designs. The quality of computing education is partly dependent on a teacher’s technological efficacy as there is a positive correlation between technology-related access, technological efficacy, and academic outcomes(Bower et al., 2015). A low self-efficacy may be due to a lack of access to resources and equitable learning opportunities. To address such a social justice issue, a student-centered game-based learning approach was designed in a course toward “an intentional, equity-focused vision to improve access, engagement, and achievement” for all students …

Perceptions Of White Therapists’ Social Class By White Clients Experiencing Rural Poverty In Maine, Rebecca Roveto Apr 2024

Perceptions Of White Therapists’ Social Class By White Clients Experiencing Rural Poverty In Maine, Rebecca Roveto

Counseling and Psychology Dissertations

This dissertation explored the experiences and perceptions of white therapists’ social class by white clients facing poverty in rural Maine. Employing an intersectional methodology rooted in Critical White Theory, Critical Theory, and the Critical Theory of Care in Nursing, the study utilized semi-structured interviews, thematic coding, and discourse analysis. The findings revealed that regional cultural values, specifically intergenerational ideals of independence, privacy, and self-sufficiency, significantly impacted clients’ encounters with stigma and social exclusion. Notably, participants perceived that Mainecare’s, Maine’s Medicaid program, reimbursement rates influenced therapist accessibility and questioned if it was associated with a lower social class.

This study made …

Camp Create, Lyle Smith

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

In life, there are certain feelings and emotions that are better conveyed through art than words alone. Using media such as graphic design and photography, I strive to organize information in a unique and thought-provoking way, and convey emotion through the elements of art and design. In art, I draw from my own experiences and create a time and place where I can ask questions without being interrupted. In design, I combine form and function, and organize elements in a way that is simultaneously logical and visually appealing. I am creating cohesion between photography and graphic design. In short, if …

Complex Dayside Particle Precipitation Observed During The Passage Of A Solar Wind Rotational Discontinuity, Simon Wing, Jean Berchem, C Philippe Escoubet, Charles J. Farrugia

Faculty Publications

The dayside particle precipitation during the passage of a solar wind rotational discontinuity (RD) event on 10 April 2015 is examined and reviewed. The RD leads to complex structures at the magnetopause, boundary layer, mantle, and cusp even though the geomagnetic activity level remains low. Particle precipitation data from DMSP F17 reveal the formation of an unusual boundary layer where the low energy (cold) ions exhibit energy-latitude dispersion that is usually associated with mantle while the high energy (hot) ions look like typical magnetospheric ions. DMSP F17 and F19 observe a double cusp that is a signature of magnetic reconnection …

A Digital Twin Of The Infant Microbiome To Predict Neurodevelopmental Deficits., Nicholas Sizemore, Kaitlyn Oliphant, Ruolin Zheng, Camilia R Martin, Erika C Claud, Ishanu Chattopadhyay

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Despite the recognized gut-brain axis link, natural variations in microbial profiles between patients hinder definition of normal abundance ranges, confounding the impact of dysbiosis on infant neurodevelopment. We infer a digital twin of the infant microbiome, forecasting ecosystem trajectories from a few initial observations. Using 16S ribosomal RNA profiles from 88 preterm infants (398 fecal samples and 32,942 abundance estimates for 91 microbial classes), the model (Q-net) predicts abundance dynamics with R2 = 0.69. Contrasting the fit to Q-nets of typical versus suboptimal development, we can reliably estimate individual deficit risk (Mδ) and identify infants …
