Background: Surgically repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a congenital heart disease with a cumulative survival rate of 72% in the 4th decade of life in longitudinal single-cohort studies. Debate surrounds conservative versus surgical management in adults with TOF once pulmonary regurgitation occurs.
Case presentation: A 73-year-old male with surgically corrected TOF presented with heart failure symptoms. He underwent ToF repair with a classic right Blalock-Taussig shunt at 2 years of age with transannular patching at 18 years of age. Echocardiography revealed elevated right ventricular systolic pressures, severe right ventricular dilatation, and pulmonary regurgitation. Our patient's new-onset right-sided heart failure …

Isovalent doping offers a method to enhance the thermoelectric properties of semiconductors, yet its influence on the phonon structure and propagation is often overlooked. Here, we take CdX (X=Te, Se) compounds as an example to study the role of isovalent doping in thermoelectrics by first-principles calculations in combination with the Boltzmann transport theory. The electronic and phononic properties of Cd8Se8, Cd8Se7Te, Cd8Te8, and Cd8Te7Se are compared. The results suggest that isovalent doping with CdX significantly improves the thermoelectric performance. Due to the similar properties of Se and Te atoms, the electronic properties remain unaffected. Moreover, doping enhances anharmonic phonon scattering, …

The transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) has seen significant evolution since its early inception, reflecting advancements in surgical techniques, patient safety, and outcomes. Originally described as an improvement over the posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), the TLIF began as an open surgical procedure, that notably reduced the need for the extensive neural retractation that hindered the PLIF. In line with the broader practice of surgery, trending toward minimally invasive access, the TLIF was followed by the development of the minimally invasive TLIF (MIS-TLIF), a technique that further decreased tissue trauma and postoperative complications. Subsequent advancements, including Trans-Kambin's Triangle TLIF (percLIF) …

Concealment And Darkness In Horace Walpole’S The Castle Of Otranto, Alexandra G. Speck
Concealment And Darkness In Horace Walpole’S The Castle Of Otranto, Alexandra G. Speck
Global Tides
This paper examines the relationship between darkness and fear in Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, widely recognized as the first Gothic novel. Walpole wrote Otranto soon after the rise of Enlightenment thought, which stressed sensory observation as the foundation for human reason. Walpole engages with Enlightenment ideas through Otranto’s dark setting, which invokes fear and irrationality in the heroine, Isabella.
Tracking Walpole’s manipulation of light and darkness through the narrative, this paper illustrates how darkness inspires more fear in Isabella than either the novel’s infamous supernatural dangers or its human villain, Prince Manfred, who pursues her through …

Independent Reading In The High School Classroom: An Examination Of Students' Reading Behaviors And Perceptions, Emma Halfman
Independent Reading In The High School Classroom: An Examination Of Students' Reading Behaviors And Perceptions, Emma Halfman
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
Independent reading is a time wherein students are allowed to read self-selected materials on their own (Yoon, 2002). Federal research like that of the National Reading Panel Report (NRP), however, has suggested that such programs in schools do not have conclusive benefits for students. Given this context, some administrators, teachers, and parents often do not advocate for independent reading in the classroom. They prefer instead that class time be spent wisely. They prefer that the class time be focused on the instruction of skills/content that matter to students and that align with state and national standards and assessments. With such …

CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
The aim of this work is the synthesis and study of the physicochemical properties of the complex compound of copper (II) acetylacetonate with a 2-aminobenzimidazole derivative. A heteroligand copper (II) complex compound containing acetylacetone and 2-amino-1-methylbenzimidazole was synthesized for the first time. The structure of the synthesized coordination compound was studied by SEM-EDX, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. It has been established that in the complex 2-amino-1-methylbenzimidazole is coordinated monodentately to the copper ion through the heterocyclic nitrogen atom and, in this case, a complex of tetragonal-bipyramidal structure is formed.

Rheological Properties Of Modified Basalt Glass, Yury Pavliukevich, Ludmila Pаpko, Ekaterina Trusova
CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
In this paper the effect of modifying components containing Al2O3, B2O3, SiO2 and CaO introduced in various combinations on high and low-temperature viscosity values of basalt glass has been studied. It is shown that the introduction of boron-containing components in compositions with basalt leads to a significant decrease in the viscosity of the basalt melt at all temperature ranges. Influence of modifiers on low-temperature viscosity values of basalt glass correlates with their influence on high-temperature viscosity. Based on experimental values of rheological properties and crystallization ability of modified basalt melts, the modes of basalt fibre production have been determined.

Changing Prejudice Against Minority Groups: The Role Of Self- And Group-Affirmation, Constantina Badea, Yara Alnajjar
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
According to self-affirmation theory, prejudice towards minority groups represents defensive reactions that individuals may exhibit to cope with threats to their ingroup. Affirming participants’ important values, reminding them of important personal or collective successes, attenuates defensive reactions such as prejudice and discrimination. A distinction is first made between self-affirmation, accomplished by recalling values that are meaningful to the individual, and group-affirmation, achieved through the recall of values important to an ingroup (e.g., family, nation). Inconsistent results were obtained in studies using self- and group-affirmation manipulations for reducing prejudice. The aim of this article is to examine factors that …
