Background: The patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common complication of prematurity that affects the majority of extremely preterm infants. In epidemiological studies, babies with a persistent PDA had increased rates of interventricular hemorrhage, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), necrotizing enterocolitis, and cerebral palsy. However, numerous clinical trials have demonstrated no improvement in outcomes with medical treatment of the PDA. However, the reliability of these studies has been called into question becaues the majority use size alone to determine hemodynamic significance of the ductus and did not include babies at the youngest gestational ages. Background: Exposure to buprenorphine as a medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) during pregnancy is associated with better outcomes compared to methadone for infants assessed with the Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring tool (FNAST). The ESC-NOW trial showed improved outcomes for infants assessed and managed with the Eat, Sleep, Console care approach (ESC) when compared to usual care with FNAST (UC). This sub-analysis assessed the association between antenatal MOUD type and infant outcomes by care approach used for managing infants with NOWS.

Case Report:

Hematochezia and anemia are common problems seen in the pediatric population, and oftentimes are managed on an outpatient basis. Lower GI bleeds are less common in children compared to upper GI bleeds, with vascular malformations being an uncommon cause of GI bleeds. While there have been published cases of pediatric colorectal vascular abnormalities, there have been few published cases of pelvic vascular anomalies that only cause colonic displacement without abnormality on colonoscopy.

Human kinases play essential and diverse roles in the cellular activities of maintaining homeostasis and growth. Genetic mutations in the genes encoding the kinases (or phosphotransferases) have been linked with various types of cancers. In this study, we cataloged mutations in 500 kinases genes in >65,000 individuals of global populations from the Human Genetic Diversity Project (HGDP) and ExAC databases, and assessed their potentially deleterious impact by using the in silico tools SIFT, Polyphen2, and CADD. The analysis highlighted 35 deleterious non-synonymous SNVs in the ExAC and 5 SNVs in the HGDP project. Notably, a higher number of deleterious mutations …

Elastic scattering of dark matter (DM) particles with baryons induce cosmological signals that may be detectable with modern or future telescopes. For DM-baryon scattering cross sections scaling with negative powers of relative velocity, 𝜎_𝜒⁢𝑏⁡(𝑣) ∝𝑣⁻²,𝑣⁻⁴, such interactions introduce a momentum-exchange rate that is nonlinear in DM-baryon bulk relative velocities, thus not amenable for inclusion as-is into standard linear cosmological Boltzmann codes. Linear Ansätze have been adopted in past works, but their accuracy is unknown as they do not arise from first-principles derivations. Disclosure overload is a condition that occurs in some users of financial statement disclosures that may result in adverse effects, such as a lack of comprehension of information and increased time for cognitive processing. Disclosure overload research has focused primarily on decision quality and accuracy when using non-mandatory disclosures, largely excluding consideration of mandatory financial statement disclosures. This study examined mandatory financial statement disclosures through the lens of cognitive fit theory using an experimental research design. Cognitive fit theory was tested across different disclosure formats and at varying levels of financial accounting literacy to measure the effect on overload symptoms. …

Demand for reducing energy consumption and detrimental environmental impacts after the effective lifetime of an engineering material are the major driving factors for the development of natural fibre reinforced composites (NFRCs) in various sectors. Compared to synthetic fibre like carbon-fibres or Kevlar, natural fibres provide several benefits including light weight, inexpensive, recyclability, superior specific strength, biodegradable, non-toxic during handling, and less energy intensive during manufacturing. This doctoral work presents observations from mechanical tests and interpretations on the suitability of natural fibre reinforced composites for less heavily loaded engineering applications areas.

During the fall of 2023, Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) researchers conducted a statewide study to establish a baseline for public perceptions related to the awareness, understanding, and attitudes about challenges that Utah women and girls face (see Background & Methods for details). The study was created to support the work of 18 areas of focus (spokes) within the movement called A Bolder Way Forward, which is dedicated to helping more Utah girls and women thrive. Miles Horton (1990) differentiates being good from being good for something. Being good for something requires an understanding of place, power, and agency. It also requires being deeply and fully present. Working for and with Jeffrey Cornett was an experience in learning how to be good for something and simultaneously learning how to collectively bring active care into a department, college, and the broader world. Psychosis-spectrum disorders remain a leading cause of disability for both individuals and society, with early identification and prevention efforts representing a promising avenue of research for addressing these concerns. One potential impediment to improving early risk identification is the historical focus on indicators thought to be exclusive to the psychosis-spectrum. This focus often comes at the expense of non-specific risk factors (e.g., disrupted sleep, adverse childhood experiences) which contribute to the risk of developing psychosis as well as other mental illnesses. The opening act of 2024 featured David Cameron, the United Kingdom’s (UK) latest Foreign Secretary, dashing the hopes of a displaced people; the island natives of the Chagos Archipelago. The Chagos islanders (Chagossians) have waged a decades long battle for the right to return to their homeland, from which they were forcibly removed in the 1960’s and 70’s. The former Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, indicated that the UK was in negotiation regarding the resettlement of the Chagossians to their native islands.
