Evaluating The Impact Of Hybrid Ventilation Strategies On Reducing The Cooling Load And Achieving Thermal Comfort Of Buildings: Regarding Arid Climate Of Uae By, Sheikha Mohammed Al Niyadi

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

The hybrid ventilation system has demonstrated significant promise in controlling indoor thermal comfort, maintaining indoor air quality, and using the least amount of energy possible. It accomplishes this by combining natural and mechanical ventilation. When natural ventilation is not possible, this system seamlessly switches to mechanical ventilation to maintain the best possible indoor thermal comfort levels. However, implementing this method in extremely dry regions is challenging due to the high energy consumption associated with air conditioning and cooling consume during the summer. In these regions, air conditioning and cooling alone account for approximately 60% of the urban energy use. The …

Federal Reserve Bank Of Chicago Circulars: A Case Study Of An Early Career Librarian’S Approach To A Full-Scale Digitization Project, Delaney Mccoy

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Each Federal Reserve Bank distributes circulars to their member banks which contain information regarding bank supervision and regulation, services, policies, and district relations. The early circulars of a Reserve Bank, those issued after the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 and before the general regulation of the twelve Reserve Banks through the Banking Act of 1935, illuminate the idiosyncratic nature of the policies and procedures of each district.

In the summer of 2023, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago sent their circulars from the years 1914 to 1979 to the Digital History and Archives team at the Federal Reserve Bank of …

Applying Systems Thinking To Navigate The Global Regulatory Complexity Problem For Post-Approval Changes, Emma Ramnarine, Anders Vinther Apr 2024

Applying Systems Thinking To Navigate The Global Regulatory Complexity Problem For Post-Approval Changes, Emma Ramnarine, Anders Vinther

Journal of Applied Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science

The complex global problem of managing post-approval changes (PACs) and its significant constraint on manufacturers’ agility to continuously improve and address supply chain challenges has been known for over two decades. Attempts to solve the problem so far have not been successful, partly because this has been treated as a complicated and not a complex problem.

Data from over 145,000 PACs across 156 countries reveals the severity of the issue; a global PAC rarely receives unanimous global approval within the World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended review timeline of six months. This leads to a significant time lag between the acquisition of …

Lessons Learned From Covid-19 Is An Opportunity To Reduce Drug Shortages - Vision And Practical Solutions, Anders Vinther

Journal of Applied Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science

The COVID-19 crisis has demonstrated that the global regulatory framework for managing post- approval changes (PACs) is not capable of handling a pandemic. Emergency procedures have been implemented across the globe to avoid drug shortages. By working drastically differently together, the unimaginable happened: in less than a year, a vaccine was developed, approved, produced and provided to people. In light of these actions, there exists a unique opportunity to retire the old system for managing PACs and replace it with a new agile and patient-centric approach built on lessons learned from the global pandemic response. This new approach must be …

The Ongoing Journey Of The One Voice Of Quality For Post-Approval Changes (1vq For Pac) Initiative, Anders Vinther, Emma Ramnarine

Journal of Applied Pharmaceutical Regulatory Science

Since 2018, the Chief Quality Officers (CQOs) of the top 25 pharma companies have spoken with one voice of quality on the topic of post-approval changes (1VQ for PAC Initiative). The 1VQ for PAC Initiative has developed practical approaches to significantly reduce the complexity of the global PAC regulatory framework. This current framework poses a risk to the supply of products to patients, as it drastically slows innovation and continual improvement. The CQOs built on an opportunity from the ICH Q10 Guideline to earn regulatory flexibility, allowing management of more PACs in the Pharmaceutical Quality System (PQS) only …

"Give 'Em Something To Talk About: Love, Generosity, And Wonder In The Portrait Of The Artist Workshop", Florence Gonsalves, Matthew Vollmer

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

This article argues for the employment of an alternative approach to the traditional writing workshop model called “Portrait of the Artist” (POTA). First, we acknowledge the historical and theoretical underpinnings of the dominant Iowa model, and engage with scholars who practice pedagogies that challenge the “gag-rule.” Second, we introduce POTA, which dismantles and reimagines the foundations of a traditional creative writing workshop by emphasizing curiosity rather than suspicion, dialogue rather than imposed silence, process over product, and person over piece. The outcomes lead us to conclude that POTA workshops are necessary, especially for marginalized student-writers most harmed by antiquated practices …

Creative Writing In A University Bridging Program For Underprivileged Stem Students, Glen Retief, Yolandi Woest, Nosipho Mthethwa Apr 2024

Creative Writing In A University Bridging Program For Underprivileged Stem Students, Glen Retief, Yolandi Woest, Nosipho Mthethwa

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Underprivileged and additional-language students struggle to access university-level STEM instruction in English. Yet efforts to bridge academic readiness gaps often founder on ineffective instructional approaches. This study used student questionnaires and writing sample comparisons to investigate the impact of weekly creative writing lessons on students enrolled in a STEM-focused, university bridging program for high school students in the Black working-class township of Mamelodi, South Africa. Our tentative results suggest that creative writing teaching may have a significant role in building confidence, written communication skills, intellectual community, and improved program retention. However, further research is needed.

Analysis Of Narrative Arcs Of College Writers’ Creative Writing: Implications For Engaging Creative Writing Across The Curriculum, Justin Nicholes Apr 2024

Analysis Of Narrative Arcs Of College Writers’ Creative Writing: Implications For Engaging Creative Writing Across The Curriculum, Justin Nicholes

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Creative writing across the curriculum (CWAC) represents one especially meaningful college-writing experience in various settings in higher education (Nicholes “Creative Writing across the Curriculum”; Creative Writing across the Curriculum; Hanauer “Meaningful Literacy”). To further understand experiences of CWAC from the perspective of student authors, this study linguistically examined two sets of texts from undergraduate writers: 221 works of creative nonfiction (CNF) and 43 works of science fiction prototyping (SFP), composed in first-year and advanced writing courses at one predominantly White, public Midwest US polytechnic university. LIWC-22 was utilized to produce descriptive statistics characterizing the narrative arcs typical in each …

A Proposal: Healing Impacts Of Writing Groups On Cancer Survivors, Cassandra M. Normand

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Those diagnosed with cancer not only suffer from the disease itself, but also psychological distress, including feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and depression. Writing groups have been found to positively impact attendees’ well-being, including decreasing anxiety, depression, and other psychological symptoms. Despite the benefits of writing groups, little research examines the impact of cancer survivors attending writing groups. This study utilized previous literature to create a curriculum for a writing group specifically for cancer survivors. This curriculum was then pilot tested with a group of cancer survivors in May and June of 2022. Psychological symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were …

384-Interest Groups And Democratic Legitimacy: Analyzing The Influence And Impact Of Interest Groups On Elections/Results, Pamela Flores

GREAT Day Posters

James Madison warned the American government that the establishment and/or expansion of factions will lead to the deterrence of Democracy. Factions or interest groups, as they will be referred to as in this research, have illustrated biased tendencies when it comes down to their decisions making. Simply put, people within a specific interest group will pursue their own interests and exclude any actions or decisions that may benefit the opposition. In this research we will explore the effects interests’ groups bias and how it has affected American Democracy through actions taken by voters themselves, such as assigning blame, making limited …

350-Do Campers Who Spent More Years At Residential Summer Camp Focusing On Restorative Practices Report Higher Levels Of Empathy?, Haley Dennis

GREAT Day Posters

Empathy involves the promotion of constructive inter-group relations through perspective-taking and prosocial action (Taylor, 2020). Supporting youth empathy is vital in deterring the cyclical nature of violence, as children comprise the future generation (Taylor, 2020). Indeed, children often act as resources rather than recipients in peace-building efforts (Taylor, 2020). Therefore, further investigation into the mechanisms that underlie empathy in youth is warranted. Camp Stomping Grounds (CSG) is a youth summer camp that promotes radical empathy through restorative practices, implementing unbounded creativity, and encouraging autonomy in daily scheduling. Time at CSG has been shown to enhance empathy in campers (Merrilees, Taber-Thomas, …

371-The Effect Of Social Media Influencers On Adolescents, Lauren Goldstein

GREAT Day Posters

With Generation Z entering their adult lives, we have our new upcoming youth known as Generation Alpha. They have had access to technology for their entire lives. This adolescent group is choosing social media platforms such as Tik Tokand Youtube for their entertainment rather than television. With that, advertising is changing and the growth of influencers is skyrocketing. Adolescents are more interactive with them than traditional celebrities, and form a parasocial relationship with them. These influencers show their everyday, luxurious lives while simultaneously "pushing" products for the youths to purchase. Most of the products are items that are expensive for …

346-Evolutionary Genomics Of Meiotic Drive In T. Whitei, Ariana Cookinham Apr 2024

346-Evolutionary Genomics Of Meiotic Drive In T. Whitei, Ariana Cookinham

GREAT Day Posters

Meiotic drive violates the fundamental law of segregation, changing allele inheritance from 50% to 100% of the time. An extreme sex-ratio meiotic drive (SR) trait is an X-linked selfish genetic element (SGE) which causes the carrier males to produce mostly female offspring. The presence of this traithas been identified in two stalk-eyed fly species,Teleopsis whiteiandTeleopsis dalmanni. InT. dalmanni, there are hundreds of differentially expressed genes, with virtually all gene expression and sequence differences confined to the X chromosome; however, this does not appear to be the case inT. whiteiin which only a few meiotic drive-associated differences appear, some of which …

344-Miming Makes It Memorable? Investigating The Role Of Iconic Signs In Memory, Jason Ozubko

GREAT Day Posters

One useful mnemonic technique that can improve memory retention is the production effect: the finding that information is better remembered when it is actively produced (i.e., spoken aloud or signed) than when it is passively received (i.e., read silently). Regarding how signing can help memory, we developed a study to investigate how the “iconicity” of signs could help memory. Iconicity is the extent to which the form of a sign resembles its meaning. For example, in ASL, the sign for "book" involves holding a closed, imaginary book with both hands, and then opening it with a quick flick of the …
