Essays On Spatial Economics And International Trade, Naiyuan Hu May 2024

Essays On Spatial Economics And International Trade, Naiyuan Hu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation consists of three papers on spatial economics and international trade. The first paper focuses on spatial inequalities. Educational resources are distributed unevenly and contribute to spatial inequality. A dynamic spatial model with life-cycle elements studies the impacts of location-specific educational resources. Individuals determine where to attend college, weighing distance, expected value of education, and available resources. Locations with more colleges attract more students. As mobility costs increase with age, many graduates stay in the city where they studied, affecting skill composition. Applied to China, it finds that the 2005- 2015 college expansion had minimal welfare impacts and suggests …

Improving The Performance Of Wi-Fi Indoor Localization In Both Dense And Unknown Environments, Quang Truong Hai May 2024

Improving The Performance Of Wi-Fi Indoor Localization In Both Dense And Unknown Environments, Quang Truong Hai

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Indoor localization is important for various pervasive applications, garnering considerable research attention over recent decades. Despite numerous proposed solutions, the practical application of these methods in real-world environments with high applicability remains challenging. One compelling use case for building owners is the ability to track individuals as they navigate through the building, whether for security, customer analytics, space utilization planning, or other management purposes. However, this task becomes exceedingly difficult in environments with hundreds or thousands of people in motion. Conversely, the need to track oneself’s location is also meaningful from the perspective of individuals traversing in crowded spaces. These …

Mast Cells In Mammary Carcinoma, Alexandria M. Ashbaugh May 2024

Mast Cells In Mammary Carcinoma, Alexandria M. Ashbaugh

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Breast cancer (BC) is an aggressive disease that takes the lives of thousands of women every year. Although knowledge and treatment of this disease have improved over the years, much is still to be discovered about BC. One area of expertise that we are currently trying to learn more information about is the mast cell (MC) and its role in BC growth and development. The MC is an immune system component discovered in tumors' extracellular matrix (ECM). As a tumor grows within body tissues, the tumor recruits the MC from surrounding connective tissues to the tumor, using signaling cytokines such …

History Of Physical Neglect And Current Food Insecurity: Moderation By Mental Health Symptoms, Brooke Welsh May 2024

History Of Physical Neglect And Current Food Insecurity: Moderation By Mental Health Symptoms, Brooke Welsh

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Food insecurity has been a topic of concern for many years. While many actions have been taken to try to reduce rates of food insecurity, further research should investigate whether certain events may increase likelihood of this experience. Thus far, a large amount of research has been completed on how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can impact chances of experiencing food insecurity as well as how mental health symptoms can impact these chances. However, there is little research showing that mental health symptoms may moderate the relationship between having ACEs and food insecurity as an adult. A sample of 124 university …

The Effect Of Yamanaka Factors On The Metastatic Potential Of Breast Cancer Cells, Riley Mendonca May 2024

The Effect Of Yamanaka Factors On The Metastatic Potential Of Breast Cancer Cells, Riley Mendonca

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The mortality associated with cancer is most commonly a result of it spreading to other tissues and organs in a process known as metastasis. For carcinomas to do this they must first break through the basement membrane containing them to interact with the stroma. This is known as an epithelial-mesenchymal transition and occurs when carcinomas suppress their original epithelial qualities in order to adopt more mesenchymal ones. This involves cancers dedifferentiating from their original cell type to lose the specialized features that distinguished them and where they came from. As cancers become more invasive, this dedifferentiation becomes more pronounced. Recent …

Fin De Siècle Russian Topos And Rimsky-Korsakov’S The Golden Cockerel, Jaidan Ursich May 2024

Fin De Siècle Russian Topos And Rimsky-Korsakov’S The Golden Cockerel, Jaidan Ursich

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Russian composers, including Glinka and The Mighty Five, helped establish a Russian nationalistic style in art music through the implementation of idiomatic folk music gestures and other commonly employed musical elements. Scholars, including Richard Taruskin, Barry Bilderback, and Pieter Van Den Toorn, have identified many of these elements, particularly the use of the octatonic scale and folk music material (thematic quotations and associative rhythmic patterns), however, they have not provided clear codification of a Russian topic. Likewise, the music of Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov has been largely ignored when compared to that of his contemporaries, though most research indicates he was heralded …

Geometric Identification Of Discrete Painlevé Equations, Logan Moore May 2024

Geometric Identification Of Discrete Painlevé Equations, Logan Moore

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis determines the type of a particular discrete Painlevé equation using a geometric approach based on Sakai theory. Previous work on discrete Painlevé equations has connected the dynamics of these equations to actions of their symmetry groups on certain families of rational algebraic surfaces. There is a known procedure for identifying the geometry of a discrete Painlevé equation from its birational mapping. This thesis uses this known procedure to determine the type of a particular discrete Painlevé equation appearing in [9].

Bipedalism Is A Balancing Act: Talus Landmarking In Facultative Bipedal Primates, Anita Patane

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Obligate bipedal locomotion, mandatorily walking on two legs, is vastly important as it is the fundamental precursor to the human lineage; it precedes tool usage and language. Chimpanzees, our closest living ancestors for the human ancestral condition, are often the proxy and are the dominant subject of human bipedalism studies. There are additional species, such as arboreal Black Spider Monkeys (Ateles paniscus) who habitually travel through the trees bipedally. These facultative bipedal primates (FBP) introduce a new lens to how modern human talus and calcaneus’ mobility has adapted to environmental shifts such as the transition from arboreal to …

End-Of-Life Patient Communication: Exploring Comfort, Communication And Education Of Healthcare Professionals For End-Of-Life Care, Madison Gremillion

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Historically, the medical field has viewed death and dying as incurable ‘medical failures,’ and as a result, many healthcare professionals have difficulties when facing a patient who is dying or at the end of their life. These individuals will use avoidant behavior to avoid end-of-life (EOL) patients or can have difficulty providing essential aspects of care including communication, that contribute to building a strong relationship between the healthcare provider and patient. For the healthcare professional (HCP), this can stem from anxiety related to thoughts of death and a lack of educational support or experience. The study of death is where …
