Keeping Tradition Alive: Studying The Evolution Of Sweetgrass Basket Stands On Highway 17 In The Charleston Lowcountry, Megan Adornetto
Keeping Tradition Alive: Studying The Evolution Of Sweetgrass Basket Stands On Highway 17 In The Charleston Lowcountry, Megan Adornetto
All Theses
Sweetgrass baskets are a popular souvenir for tourists visiting the Lowcountry and for collectors who admire the folk art of the Gullah Geechee people. The stands at which these baskets are sold can be found along Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant, SC. This area was once a rural community that has been developed due to suburban sprawl since the early 20th century. Due to this development, as well as the lack of availability of sweetgrass and other natural resources to create these baskets, the landscape of roadside business at these basket stands is different than it was when the first …
Under The Genovese Sun: Interior Finish Analysis On The Clemson Architectural Foundation Charles E. Daniel Center For Building Research And Urban Studies Villa, Anna Gehring
All Theses
This research examines the early interior finishes of the Clemson Architectural Foundation (CAF) Charles E. Daniel Center for Building Research and Urban Studies villa in Genoa, Italy. The research develops a process to suggest the period one interior paint scheme. Purchased by Clemson in 1973, the villa possesses much of its architectural integrity, but lacks information of its original interior fabric. Secondary sources establish a circa 1899 construction date for the building. Thus, the research question is: what best practice investigation, testing, and research methods should a preservationist use to discover the first period interior finishes for the late 19 …

By The Devil’S Grace: Zofloya’S Victoria And The Recontextualizing Of A Protagonist, Katherine Woods
By The Devil’S Grace: Zofloya’S Victoria And The Recontextualizing Of A Protagonist, Katherine Woods
All Theses
Focusing on Victoria, the protagonist of Charlotte Dacre’s Zofloya, or The Moor, this paper seeks to reclaim and recontextualize her. I embrace the troubling nature of Victoria by focusing on how “evil”, as well as other negative labels, function in the text in reference to her. Resisting a morality centered reading, this paper then explores Victoria's evil expressed through her body in conversation with conventions of monstrousness. I then explore Victoria’s relationship with her mother as a complication to both her arc and the novel’s treatment of female characters overall. Victoria offers not only new ways of approaching similar Gothic …
Sulfonated Lignin-Based Ionomer Biocomposite Membranes For Redox Flow Batteries, Aiswarya Mechoor
Sulfonated Lignin-Based Ionomer Biocomposite Membranes For Redox Flow Batteries, Aiswarya Mechoor
All Theses
The current benchmark membrane for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), Nafion™, accounts for up to 40% of the cost of the battery and suffers from poor ion selectivity, leading to diminished battery performance. Consequently, alternative ionomer membranes, such as sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK), have recently garnered attention due to their lower cost and similar performance properties to Nafion. However, like Nafion, SPEEK also suffers from poor ion selectivity. In this study, we attempt to address the issue of poor ion selectivity by developing SPEEK–lignin composite membranes containing fractionated and functionalized lignin. Specifically, two lignin fractions – a low molecular …

As food prices continue to rise, many consumers are looking at ways to cut back on spending and many look to how much they spend on food. Food waste in an average American household of four leads to about $1,500 worth of unused/wasted food annually,
This study was conducted to see how the use of Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2) could be used to treat and extend the shelf life of freshly sliced tomatoes for food service applications. Prior research in this regard has looked at whole tomatoes as opposed to sliced varieties, and many have not utilized a sensory …
Defining And Labeling Traversable Space In A Forested Environment, James Nguyen
Defining And Labeling Traversable Space In A Forested Environment, James Nguyen
All Theses
This thesis investigates the problem of identifying traversable terrain in outdoor conditions. We are motivated by research in recent years toward identifying drivable space for the purpose of developing autonomous vehicles. Our motivating application is similar but also different. We envision a “Hiker Helper” that assists humans with dismounted navigation in forested terrain. A common challenge in this type of environment is identifying a viable path for moving through terrain that is congested with trees, bushes, other flora, and natural obstacles that would make navigation difficult. We envision training an artificial intelligence (AI) model to automatically analyze images of this …

Ancient scholars and artists turned to the classic muses for form, worship, and inspiration in pursuit of crafting their greatest works. In an information age rife with new ideas and new artists, it is inevitable that new creative obstacles will be encountered and new muses will be called upon to overcome them. This project is an exploration of the digital modeling pipeline through the formation of such muses. It begins with the creation and iteration of concept art for three original characters, moves on to the sculpting of the characters in Zbrush, creation of clothes in Marvelous Designer, posing, and …
My Risk Or Theirs? An Experimental Investigation Of Character-Driven And Plot-Driven Engagement As Explanations For Risk Perceptions, Emma Cox
All Theses
Two distinct bodies of research examine means of increasing people’s health- related risk perceptions through persuasive message design. First, Construal Level Theory (CLT) posits that reducing perceived psychological distance from a health risk can increase people’s perceived relevance of the health issue. Second, models of narrative persuasion posit that narratives elicit audience engagement, which reduces counter- arguing and increases risk perceptions. So and Nabi’s (2013) Risk Convergence Model (RCM) was proposed to merge the two bodies of research: the model posits that viewers’ engagement with narratives diminishes perceived social distance from characters, resulting in a convergence of risk between characters …

Multiple aspects of climate change will affect coastal structures. One type of structure in these coastal environments that will be affected is lighthouses. These structures are and important symbol for marine navigation. Without their presents, the coastline loses an important aspect to its significance. There have already been cases of climate change scenarios affecting these structures such as erosion and wave impacts. This thesis focuses on the material vulnerability of lighthouses when in contact with new sea water levels. How vulnerable are lighthouses in terms of their material property to submersion in salt water due to sea level rise along …
The Effects Of Pre-Parturient Nutrient Restriction On Milk Production, Milk Fat Percentage, Milk Fatty Acid Profile, And Lamb Growth In Sheep, Dakota Murray
All Theses
Cross-bred ewes carrying twins, confirmed via ultrasound, were split into two groups: nutrient-restricted (NR), n=15, and control (CON), n=16. On day (d) 86, at 60% of the NRC requirements, nutrient restriction began and lasted until parturition, at which point ewes were placed back onto a regular diet. After parturition, milk samples and lamb weights were taken on days 1, 7, 14, and 21. Milk lipids were then extracted using modified methods proposed by Hara and Radin (1978). Lipid samples were weighed and then methylated following the procedure outlined by Lock and colleagues (2013). Methylated samples were then analyzed by gas …
Development And Evaluation Of An Arsenic Transport Model For The Maurice River Watershed, Christina Eddleman
Development And Evaluation Of An Arsenic Transport Model For The Maurice River Watershed, Christina Eddleman
All Theses
For many Superfund sites across the United States, arsenic is one of the most common contaminants of concern that must be cleaned up to protect human and environmental health. Past research and health studies have documented the harmful effects of inorganic arsenic on humans and the environment but selecting an appropriate remediation plan depends on several site-specific factors at each Superfund site. To assist in determining an appropriate remediation plan, sediment and contaminant transport models have been used to simulate the transport of arsenic and other contaminants of concern at contaminated sites to, e.g., make relative comparisons of the efficacy …

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Kidney transplantation is the most successful kidney replacement therapy available, resulting in improved recipient survival and societal cost savings. Yet, nearly 70 years after the first successful kidney transplant, there are still numerous barriers and untapped opportunities that constrain the access to transplant. The literature describing these barriers is extensive, but the practices and processes to solve them are less clear. Solutions must be multidisciplinary and be the product of strong partnerships among patients, their networks, health care providers, and transplant programs. Transparency in the referral, evaluation, and listing process as well as organ selection are paramount to build such …

Code models have made significant advancements in code intelligence by encoding knowledge about programming languages. While previous studies have explored the capabilities of these models in learning code syntax, there has been limited investigation on their ability to understand code semantics. Additionally, existing analyses assume the number of edges between nodes at the abstract syntax tree (AST) is related to syntax distance, and also often require transforming the high-dimensional space of deep learning models to a low-dimensional one, which may introduce inaccuracies. To study how code models represent code syntax and semantics, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of 7 code …
