Graduate School of Media and Communications

African journalism practice presents unique opportunities and challenges that require journalists to be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and values to engage in sustainable journalism. Training institutions play a critical role in ensuring that journalists are not only professionally-ready to execute their mandate but also that they can safeguard and promote ethical values in their everyday work. Some of these values include “truth telling, independence, objectivity, fairness, inclusivity and social justice” (Gade, Nduka, and Dastger 2017, 10). Africa, like other regions of the Global South, has several journalism training institutions that provide an opportunity to challenge “hegemonic epistemologies and …

Reflections On Linear B, (Part 3): The Egyptian Cat-God Mau, Gerald Leonard Cohen May 2024

Reflections On Linear B, (Part 3): The Egyptian Cat-God Mau, Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

The cat figure in Linear B sign 80 (with antecedents) likely derives ultimately from the nightly defeat of the Egyptian god of chaos (Apep, aka Apophis) by the sun god Ra, who took the form of the divine cat Mau. An alternative interpretation is set forth in Ferrara and Weingarten 2022, which sees the cat portrayals for wool or woolen products in Cretan Hieroglyphics as traceable to the cat sound /ma/ appearing by coincidence in Greek μαλλός ‘wool’ (possibly of pre-Greek origin). Perhaps both factors played a role (multiple causation).

The amalgamation of ubiquity, mobility, computing prowess, storage, and communication of the portable electronic devices including smartphones, wearable devices, tablets have significantly altered the fabric of human existence. The software applications for these mobile devices possess the capability to disseminate and receive information, thereby enable the development of applications that may execute in collaborative manner. However, in situations with ad-hoc connectivity unavailability of infrastructure and communication breakdown are common, which inhibit information sharing across the devices, and hence affect the applications running in the collaborative spaces. Further the applications developers face challenges while developing reliable collaborative applications that can seamlessly …

Climate change insurance: planting aspen seedlings as fuel breaks

Catherine Schloegel, Program Manager, The Nature Conservancy, Boulder, Colorado

Jordan Mead, Resource Specialist, Summit County Open Space and Trails Department, Frisco, Colorado

As climate impacts accelerate, mountain communities living near forested areas across the West will be at increasing risk of more frequent wildfires. To protect neighborhoods from high-severity wildfires, land managers frequently clear strips of forest around homes and roads. We examined the potential to plant true aspen seedlings in these fuel breaks to increase habitat diversity while maintaining a reduced risk of wildfire. Historically, aspen has acted as a …

"Facing My Own Misogyny": A Content Analysis Of Personal Essays On The Subreddit R/Exredpill, Aj Siegel

RhetTech

Digital misogyny, perhaps better known as the Red Pill or the manosphere, has been growing in popularity and, in doing so, spreading anti-woman and toxic masculinity. This community has existed for years, but as figures like Andrew Tate bring it into public consciousness, there is a severe lack of investigation into the possibility of rehabilitating from this ideology. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the subreddit r/ExRedPill, which is a support group for people trying to unlearn this form of misogyny. It explores a particular genre on the subreddit—personal essays—in which community members detail their experiences in …

The Search For Photonuclear Interactions Of Muons Utilizing Test Beam Data At The Large Hadron Collider, Miranda M. Williams

2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The ATLAS Detector is one of four different types of detectors within the Large Hadron Collider and is used to study the fundamental theories of the universe. Within the ATLAS experiment, beams of known composition and energies – otherwise known as “test beams” – are one of the many methods used to study specific physical phenomena. In this study, a test beam of muons with an energy of 160 GeV was analyzed to search for evidence of photonuclear interactions. This necessitated analyzing and filtering over 50,000 total events using specific parameters that would indicate such an event had occurred. To …

Urban Harmony: Exploring The Interplay Of New Urbanism Qualities On Economic Prosperity And Psychological Wellbeing In Contemporary Cities, Crew T. Borgeson

2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Now that most people live in urban places, answering which urbanism best provides citizen well-being becomes increasingly important. After nearly a century of suburban development, the significant drawbacks of urban sprawl are widely documented, namely the unsustainability and social impacts they incur. Many American cities, however, continue to chiefly expand in this way. What if cities were to make decisions not based on the status quo of today’s building codes but instead drew inspiration from great historical cities, applying their lessons to the unique challenges of the 21st century?

The New Urbanism movement aims to identify and incorporate the elements …

Evaluating The Effects Of Acute Beetroot Supplementation On Oxygen Consumption And Exercise Performance During Submaximal Exercise: A Systematic Review, Madeline L. Kline

2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Beetroot juice has become a very popular supplement to try to improve cardiorespiratory fitness. Beetroot juice contains nitrates which is converted in body into nitric oxide, a vasodilator. This allows for more blood flow to exercising muscles. Many studies have been conducted to see if beetroot supplementation will affect performance and cardiorespiratory parameters during different types of exercise. However, much of the literature has conflicting results. For this study, seven articles were examined to determine if acute beetroot supplementation will affect oxygen consumption and exercise performance of active individuals during submaximal exercise. Of these studies, most of them did see …

The Mercy Of Saint Seraphim By Ivan Shmelyov: An Original English Translation, Nina Tarpley

2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The Russian writer Ivan Shmelyov (1872-1950) is acclaimed not only in Russia, but also widely throughout Europe for his novels, short stories, and fairytales written with a marked depth of meaning, beauty, and expression. He wrote and published throughout his entire life ~ from the pre-revolutionary years in Russia, into the years of the Revolution, and eventually as an émigré in Europe. Although Shmelyov is celebrated throughout Russia and Europe both in academic and public circles, he is little known to the American people, and English-speaking peoples. In academic circles, scholarship on Shmelyov in the English language is extremely limited. …
