Social Struggles Of Disabled Children: Impacts Of Lack Of Pragmatic Abilities On Children With Developmental Disorders, Celestia Bennett May 2024

Social Struggles Of Disabled Children: Impacts Of Lack Of Pragmatic Abilities On Children With Developmental Disorders, Celestia Bennett

University Honors College

It is well known and researched that those with autism (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), fragile X syndrome (FXS), and Down syndrome (DS) have impaired pragmatic abilities, especially when compared to their typically developing (TD) peers. There is not much research comparing the differences in pragmatic deficits between children with the above neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and the impacts these deficits have on their lives. This research aims to explore the pragmatic deficits children with ASD, ADHD, FXS, and DS may experience, how their pragmatic abilities compare to their TD peers, and the impact of those deficits on their daily …

Sustainable Accounting: The Benefits And Challenges Of Its Implementation, Collin Eckstein

University Honors College

This thesis is centered around the idea that sustainability is a necessary component within the world. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors are key components of analyzing sustainable practices. Although accountants have historically focused on financial reporting, they now have the added function of sustainable accounting as environmental implications are an area of concern for companies. A substantial component of this thesis centers around analyzing how ESG factors contribute to an organization’s financial performance. It also observes how comprehensive sustainability reports impact investor decisions and examines the challenges that auditors face when providing assurance for sustainability initiatives. Furthermore, it examines …

A Nursing Point Of View: Investigating The Causes Of Medical Errors And Strategies For Prevention, Lauren Shillo May 2024

A Nursing Point Of View: Investigating The Causes Of Medical Errors And Strategies For Prevention, Lauren Shillo

University Honors College

Bedside nursing is more of an art then what is seen or heard of from news articles or stories depicting a day in the life of a healthcare worker. “250,000 people die every year from medical errors, making it the third leading cause of death in the United States” (James, 2013). While there is no definitive answer or clear-cut solution to avoiding medical errors within nursing practice, indefinitely, there are possible ways to greatly reduce the effects and harm that accidental human errors have within the world of medicine. Through time, thousands of new policies and protocols have evolved from …

Parent Experiences In Advocating For Their Advanced Children In Elementary Schools, Kathryn Adams May 2024

Parent Experiences In Advocating For Their Advanced Children In Elementary Schools, Kathryn Adams

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The amalgamation of underachievement, underidentification, lack of state and national mandates and definitions, and the unique social, emotional, and academic needs of gifted and advanced students has resulted in a system fraught with issues that leave parents with the role of advocating for their child’s best interests at school. According to the National Association for Gifted Children, schools may not be completely effective in providing services for gifted children, leaving many parents feeling that their children’s needs simply are not being met (Harris, 2017). Parents of gifted or advanced children have noted several areas in which they feel unsatisfied with …

A Systematic Review Of Practices Utilized By Administrators To Support Teachers With Classroom Management, Ciara Waggoner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An administrator’s role in supporting teachers has been a topic often discussed in literature. A less mentioned administrative function is their role in supporting teachers in classroom management strategies related to teaching and setting expectations. Problem behaviors in the classroom have a negative impact on student outcomes. Administrators can help address problem behaviors through the use of four effective administrator practices areas identified by Grissom et. al. (2021): (a) instructionally focused interactions (b) building a productive school climate (b) facilitating collaboration, and (c) managing personnel and resources. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify: (1) Which of the …

Cross-Cultural Management In Dublin: An Analysis Of The Practices And Challenges Faced By Managerial Staff In Irish Businesses., Ayala Lopes Carneiro De Oliveira

MA in International Business

Cross-cultural studies are gaining increasing relevance in both academia and the corporate world (Arslan, 2001; Chrobot-Mason, et al., 2007; Molinsky, 2013; Meyer, 2014). Ireland, with its immigration policies and incentives for multinational companies, is attracting skilled individuals, leading to a growing diversity in the country. Local businesses frequently hire foreigners, enriching teams with diverse perspectives and creativity. According to the Irish Census (CSO, 2023), over 420,000 immigrants aged 15 and over were employed in Ireland in 2022, surpassing the number of employed Irish nationals.

Highly culturally diverse workplaces necessitate specific management practices to address challenges arising from cultural misunderstandings, unclear …

The Humanization Of War Reparations: Combatant Deaths And Compensation In Unlawful Wars, Hannes Jöbstl, Dean Rosenberg

Michigan Journal of International Law

Recent events have sparked a renewed interest in the law and practice of war reparations. While today it is uncontroversial that unlawful uses of force, including acts of aggression, entail the obligation of the wrongdoing state to make reparations, including by way of compensation, the precise extent of this obligation remains subject to debate. One particularly contentious aspect is whether, and to what extent, states that violate the prohibition on the use of force are obligated to pay compensation not only for harm caused to civilians and civilian objects, but also for damage caused to the armed forces of the …

Synthesis Of Poly-N-Methylated Peptides Against Malaria, Kaitlyn Watson May 2024

Synthesis Of Poly-N-Methylated Peptides Against Malaria, Kaitlyn Watson

Theses & Dissertations

Malaria, a life-threatening global health concern, is primarily targeted by mainstream treatments such as artemisinin-based combination therapies, focusing on the blood stage of the disease. Primaquine, one of the few drugs active against the liver stage, faces challenges with reports of resistance in Plasmodium vivax strains and relapsing infections. With the scarcity of liver-stage-targeting drugs and increasing cases of drug-resistant malaria, the World Health Organization emphasizes the urgent need for novel therapeutic agents. Marine organisms are a rich source of new bioactive compounds, and extracts from the Antarctic Sea sponge Inflatella coelosphaeroides revealed new N-methylated peptides exhibiting promising antimalarial activity, …

The students were required to take remedial courses in math, writing, and /or reading before taking any credit …

Spectacles Of Security: Deconstructing Visual Narratives Of Operation Lone Star, Terry Kincer May 2024

Spectacles Of Security: Deconstructing Visual Narratives Of Operation Lone Star, Terry Kincer

Theses & Dissertations

Operation Lone Star was a border security initiative launched by Texas Governor Greg Abbott in March 2021. Serving as the intermediary between the military and the public, the Texas Military Department's YouTube channel, TMD Operation Lone Star, produced news-style short digital videos aimed at documenting and promoting increased security along the U.S.-Mexican border. Drawing on Peter Andreas's (2022) concept of the border as a symbolically manipulated site, this study deconstructed these videos to analyze the visual strategies employed in depicting the migrant crisis as a threat to the United States. Through an examination of thematic categories such as massification, …

You Can't Sit With Us: A Textual Analysis Of Racial Hostility In The Sarah J. Maas Fandom On Tiktok, Ebony Purks May 2024

You Can't Sit With Us: A Textual Analysis Of Racial Hostility In The Sarah J. Maas Fandom On Tiktok, Ebony Purks

Theses & Dissertations

This paper examines the relationship between fandom, race, and the cultivation of (digital) community. I argue that fandoms provide an important sense of community for many people and contribute to defining American pop culture in new and interesting ways. However, fandom communities are too often unwelcome or downright hostile to nonwhite fans or to fans who do not subscribe to the status quo of white supremacy. To explore how fandoms marginalize racial minorities, I conduct a textual analysis of the Sarah J. Maas (SJM) fandom’s rhetorical habits on TikTok. I have selected hashtags the fandom commonly uses to connect, and …

Entrepreneurship Education: Understanding The Lived Entrepreneurial Experience Of Community College Students In South Texas, Hussain Y. Sama May 2024

Entrepreneurship Education: Understanding The Lived Entrepreneurial Experience Of Community College Students In South Texas, Hussain Y. Sama

Theses & Dissertations

Entrepreneurship education (EE) is a hot topic and has gained the attention and interest of scholars in the United States and globally. Despite the growth of EE, scholars have been marginalizing the impact of EE at the community college level and there is a dearth of studies in this area (Liguori et al. 2019; Mars & Ginter 2012). Therefore, I conducted this study to bridge this indicated gap and contribute to the EE literature through exploring the entrepreneurial learning and practical experiences of community college student entrepreneurs.

The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to better understand the lived …

Research Focus. The Covid pandemic was an unprecedented event evolving from a novel virus unknown to humans, highly infectious with no human immunity, spreading globally (Bell et al., 2020). With the declaration of a worldwide pandemic in March 2020, graduate students and faculty of colleges and universities nationwide experienced a disruption in their graduate practicum/internship courses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to use a qualitative instrumental case study design to explore the challenges faculty instructors faced with supervising graduate student practicums/internships, and the graduate student barriers with self-directed learning, when limited to digital environments during the Covid pandemic; …

Counting Hamming-Graceful Labelings Of Paths, Ashka Dalal May 2024

Counting Hamming-Graceful Labelings Of Paths, Ashka Dalal

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Let Γ be a graph of m edges and n vertices. A Hamming-graceful labeling of Γ labels vertices with binary strings of length m and the edge labels are induced by the Hamming distance between vertex labels. It is known that all paths have Hamming-graceful labelings, thus the question arises, how many possible labelings exist for a path of a given size. We develop an algebraic way to generate labelings, conjecture a method for counting, prove this for small examples, and verify larger examples using a Python program.

No Sword, No Shield, No Problem: Ai In Pro Se Section 1983 Suits, Michaela Calhoun May 2024

No Sword, No Shield, No Problem: Ai In Pro Se Section 1983 Suits, Michaela Calhoun

University of Colorado Law Review Forum

Originating during the Reconstruction era, 42 U.S.C. 1983 emerged as a legislative tool to safeguard individuals’ constitutional rights and liberties. Initially designed to combat state-sanctioned violence, its efficacy has been eroded over time by subsequent judicial and legislative action. Unfortunately, the current state of Section 1983 falls short of this envisioned role, particularly for incarcerated individuals who find themselves navigating the complexities of the federal court system as pro se litigants.

Faced with a landscape devoid of resources, incarcerated individuals struggle to realize their constitutional rights, further perpetuating their collective status as a second-class citizenry—a status imposed by their own …

Impacts Of Urbanization On Demographics And The Stress Level Of White-Tailed Deer In The Piedmont Of South Carolina, Cameron Bramhall May 2024

Impacts Of Urbanization On Demographics And The Stress Level Of White-Tailed Deer In The Piedmont Of South Carolina, Cameron Bramhall

Graduate Theses

Population demographics and density studies are a common way of determining number of individuals in location. Understanding how many individuals and sex ratios can help estimate total populations for future potential management practices. For white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), commonly referred to as whitetail deer, like other cervids, having too many or too few individuals in an area can cause issues. Some of the issues that may arise with too many individuals include higher disease potential, and a general lack of resources leading to an increase in competition. As areas that were once habitat for whitetail deer become more and more …

To Excavate An Absence, Margaret Compton May 2024

To Excavate An Absence, Margaret Compton

Graduate Theses

This thesis is an exploration of memory’s fluctuating aspects, utilizing natural materials and casting processes to create a sculptural body of work deeply rooted in materialized metaphor. Examining the relationship between mold and cast, part and whole, and interior and exterior, I utilize casting as a framework to understand the duality of remembering and forgetting. Memories, much like the natural landscape, are ephemeral, fading, and fracturing over time. Both external environments and internal mental landscapes share the common language of erosion, existing as present or absent, remembered or forgotten. Conestee Nature Preserve in Mauldin, South Carolina, serves as my “site” …

Effects Of Different Land-Use Types On The Space Use Of The Woodland Box Turtle, Sydney Grant May 2024

Effects Of Different Land-Use Types On The Space Use Of The Woodland Box Turtle, Sydney Grant

Graduate Theses

Human land use change has resulted in extensive habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation, threatening biodiversity worldwide. The population of woodland box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) has declined because of land use changes throughout the temperate broadleaf forests of the eastern United States. However, the responses of woodland box turtles to land use change remain unclear, with inconsistent responses documented in the literature. To understand how woodland box turtles respond to different land cover types, this study estimated habitat selection and home range in a mosaic landscape in the Piedmont of South Carolina, U.S.A. Specifically, this study asked whether woodland box …

The Contribution Of Micrornas To Rybp Silencing In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Alex B. Lee May 2024

The Contribution Of Micrornas To Rybp Silencing In Glioblastoma Multiforme, Alex B. Lee

Graduate Theses

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive and invasive tumor of the central nervous system (CNS). Survival rates are abysmal, with only 7.2% of patients alive 5-years after diagnosis. Because of this, understanding epigenetic alterations that give GBM tumors their aggressive phenotypes is critical for the development of more targeted and effective therapies. These alterations frequently affect a group of proteins called the Polycomb group proteins, which play important oncogenic and tumor suppressive roles in cancer. One Polycomb protein, the RING1- and YY1-binding protein (RYBP), is downregulated in a majority of GBM patients, suggesting a strong tumor suppressive property. In …

Threads Of Connection: An Offering To Re-Tangle Humanity And Nature With The Patterns Of Our World, Emily Shelton May 2024

Threads Of Connection: An Offering To Re-Tangle Humanity And Nature With The Patterns Of Our World, Emily Shelton

Graduate Theses

In our world there are patterns of self-similarity that serve as evidence of the interconnectedness between humankind and the rest of the natural world. They are reflected in our bodies, behaviors, and environments, both natural and manmade, and can be found throughout systems at every scale, micro through macro. These organic, linear motifs branch into smaller iterations that seem to shape our existence on this planet as we gravitate towards experiences that echo these patterns. During everyday acts like shopping in a grocery store or a crowd at a concert, we unconsciously participate in self-similar collective movements as we navigate …
