Is Calendar Math Worth It? A Research Study On The Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Calendar Math, Caitlyn Woodman

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

This study examined the student and teacher perceptions of calendar math when introduced in a classroom. This study also compared student perceptions of calendar math to their regular number sense routine, “number of the day.” Students in this four-weeklong study participated in calendar math for twenty minutes daily. By the third week of the study, students took a survey asking their thoughts regarding calendar math and number of the day. Six students were selected to be interviewed based on survey results. The qualitative data was analyzed using the constant comparative method, and the surveys were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The …

Implementing Student-To-Teacher Feedback: Analyzing The Effectiveness Of Feedback In A Pull-Out Special Education Classroom, Aubrie Hutson

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

This qualitative case study focused on special education pull-out teachers’ and their students’ perceptions of student-to-teacher feedback forms and how the feedback forms influence their teaching and student learning. The researcher used four data collection methods including feedback forms, interviews, observational notes, and surveys. The patterns and themes found within the data collected were analyzed to determine the study’s findings. The major findings revealed that students who are given the opportunity to openly express their needs through a feedback form felt that the tool helped them to communicate their feelings to their teacher. The students found that expressing their needs …

Inclusion Of The Virtual Other: How Closeness On Social Media Moderates The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Close Friends’ Alcohol-Related Posting And Drinking, Angela Tanygin May 2024

Inclusion Of The Virtual Other: How Closeness On Social Media Moderates The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Close Friends’ Alcohol-Related Posting And Drinking, Angela Tanygin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heavy drinking among young adults is a serious, longstanding public health issue. College students are particularly vulnerable to a culture of intoxication that promotes excessive drinking, which has been linked to severe consequences such as sexual assaults, car accidents, and even death. An abundance of literature has found that students’ overestimations of peer drinking norms are associated with greater alcohol use and problems. Furthermore, research has established a strong linkage between students posting and viewing peers’ alcohol-related content (ARC) on social media and increased drinking. However, there is a dearth of studies examining how closeness to close friends on social …

Ejagham Mysticism In The Funeral Practices Of The Mgbe (Ekpe) And Moninkim Institutions: Insights For Research Methodology And Theological Epistemology., Besem Etchi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The knowledge of the divine broadens and deepens as each location contributes the history, elements, and practices related to its divine revelation. This dissertation contributes from the Ejagham locations of Cameroon and Nigeria. The Ejagham precolonial institutions of Moninkim and Mgbe (Ekpe) were tuition-paid training schools for personal development and prophetic leadership. Their structured curriculum to train one’s personal and social ejong (personality), towards the Ejagham organizing principles of beauty and excellence, is replete with Ejagham mysticism and indigenous epistemology. Unfortunately, Moninkim has been misrepresented in years of scholarly research as a girl’s seclusion and coming-of-age-for-marriage rite and Mgbe (Ekpe) …

The Ecclesiology Of Catalino G. Arévalo: Inculturation, Mission, And Liberation In The Philippine Context, Zachary Ryan Dehm May 2024

The Ecclesiology Of Catalino G. Arévalo: Inculturation, Mission, And Liberation In The Philippine Context, Zachary Ryan Dehm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Catalino G. Arévalo, S.J., was an eminent Filipino ecclesiologist of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Through his work for the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences in particular, he played a significant role in the reception of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) in Asia and in the development of inculturation as a theological norm. Yet, Arévalo offered no systematic articulation of his theology of the church. By examining his work spanning seven decades, this dissertation traces the development of Arévalo’s ecclesiology and offers five foundational principles necessary for gaining a systematic understanding of his thought: (1) ecclesiology must be situated within …

Aristotle's Division Of The Sciences And The Impossibility Of A Science Of Everything, Christopher Lutz May 2024

Aristotle's Division Of The Sciences And The Impossibility Of A Science Of Everything, Christopher Lutz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aristotle’s division between practical, productive, and theoretical sciences is widely acknowledged, and it is uncontroversial to say that it organizes his texts. However, contemporary scholarship often treats the division of the sciences as a mere organizational structure without investigating its underlying principles. My dissertation seeks to correct this oversight by investigating the logical principles of Aristotle’s division of the sciences in the Posterior Analytics’ account of scientific knowledge (ἐπιστήμη). My central argument is that Aristotle sees the sciences as inherently divided, so that a demonstrative science of everything is impossible. By understanding why science is divided, we are better …

Self-Diffusiophoretic Propulsion Of A Spheroidal Particle In A Shear-Thinning Fluid, Guangpu Zhu, Brandon Van Gogh, Lailai Zhu, On Shun Pak May 2024

Self-Diffusiophoretic Propulsion Of A Spheroidal Particle In A Shear-Thinning Fluid, Guangpu Zhu, Brandon Van Gogh, Lailai Zhu, On Shun Pak

Mechanical Engineering

Shear-thinning viscosity is a non-Newtonian behaviour that active particles often encounter in biological fluids such as blood and mucus. The fundamental question of how this ubiquitous non-Newtonian rheology affects the propulsion of active particles has attracted substantial interest. In particular, spherical Janus particles driven by self-diffusiophoresis, a major physico-chemical propulsion mechanism of synthetic active particles, were shown to always swim slower in a shear-thinning fluid than in a Newtonian fluid. In this work, we move beyond the spherical limit to examine the effect of particle eccentricity on self-diffusiophoretic propulsion in a shear-thinning fluid. We use a combination of asymptotic analysis …

Impact Of Esg Ratings On Company Stock Price Returns, Benjamin Mccormick May 2024

Impact Of Esg Ratings On Company Stock Price Returns, Benjamin Mccormick

Honors College Theses

ESG, Environmental, Social, Governance, is a new business philosophy that asserts that businesses have a duty to the environment, their communities, and to act legally and ethically. ESG rating agencies are built around grading public companies on their fulfillment of these objectives. Critics of ESG cite that ESG dilutes the primary purpose of business, to create value for shareholders. This paper uses regression analysis to test whether these perspectives are mutually exclusive. With stock returns as the dependent variable and ESG ratings as the dependent variable of interest, this paper finds a slight correlation between lower returns and companies in …

Co-Teaching In The Classroom: Students’, The Clinical Teacher’S, And The Classroom Teacher’S Perceptions, Allison Nicole Dale

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

Co-teaching, where the clinical teacher and classroom teacher teach using different models, has become widely used in clinical teaching placements. This action research study, conducted in a second-grade classroom, had two purposes: to learn teachers’ and students’ perceptions towards co-teaching, and how different co-teaching models were used in different content areas. Through collecting surveys, interviewing students and the classroom teacher, and composing journal entries, qualitative data was analyzed to find common themes that emerged, while quantitative data from the surveys was calculated to find the mean and mode. The study found that co-teaching enriched the learning experience and provided more …

Covid-19 And Global Institutional Shift From National To Subnational Governments, Jonathan Feld-Jacobson, Armaan Rizvi, Bora Sinan May 2024

Covid-19 And Global Institutional Shift From National To Subnational Governments, Jonathan Feld-Jacobson, Armaan Rizvi, Bora Sinan

Working Papers Series

The COVID-19 Pandemic saw dramatic global shifts in legislative powers between central and local governments. With changes in the severity and duration of the pandemic, in the federations of Nigeria, Australia, and Canada, policymaking regarding border and school closures and states of emergency saw an increasing involvement of regional governments. We suggest that looking at the national and regional PPI data for our hypotheses could indicate directly the severity of the pandemic in these nations. Federalisms particularly provide a case of institutional change evidencing that COVID-era decision-making saw a change in the rules and expectations of governance in the nations …

The Impact Of Purchasing Power Parity (Ppp), Infrastructure, And Decentralization On Pandemic Restrictions, Liam Hansen, Veronica Taraskina, Jennifer Weng May 2024

The Impact Of Purchasing Power Parity (Ppp), Infrastructure, And Decentralization On Pandemic Restrictions, Liam Hansen, Veronica Taraskina, Jennifer Weng

Working Papers Series

This research compares a country's mandate to shift to remote work between the federal and regional levels in comparison to PPP. We focus on how economic factors determine a country's ability to move to remote work and at what level of government the decision is made. The findings suggest that while there was variation in which level of government issued work-from-home requirements, there were strong trends for most mandates to come from the federal level. Moreover, an overwhelming majority of countries issued such federal mandates regardless of PPP. We then compare PPP per capita and the stringency of public transportation …

Art History Theses and Dissertations

A Mixture of Prints Representing the Events that Happened in 1713 is a print about style, printmaking, and history. I will utilize popular trompe-l’oeil works both from Great Britain and the Netherlands to reconnect this work with its stylistic brethren. Through analyzing the selfreferential letters and depictions of different printed media, I will illustrate how this print is both part of and about the Paris print market of 1713. Finally, I will reconnect the events depicted in the work to the War of the Spanish Succession as a primary source depicting the French perspective of the war. This work is …

Danny The Diabetic Dinosaur: A Resource For Families Impacted By Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Emily E. Welch

Honors Theses

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic condition that impacts approximately a quarter of a million children in the United States alone. T1DM is a complicated diagnosis that requires specialized treatment and education. Research has shown that families of children with T1DM experience a burden related to a lack of education in the healthcare system. Educational resources such as children’s books can act as a bridge between the healthcare system and families as they allow parents and children to increase their knowledge about T1DM and open the doors for communication. Education is shown to decrease further complications related to …

Measuring Student Perceptions On Online Vs. Traditional Learning, Peyton Vittitoe, Betsy Matthews May 2024

Measuring Student Perceptions On Online Vs. Traditional Learning, Peyton Vittitoe, Betsy Matthews

Honors Theses

During the time of the global pandemic, COVID-19, there was a rapid transition in learning environments for schools across the country. During this transition, online based education was viewed extremely poorly by students, educators and even parents. Both students and educators thrived on human interaction in the classroom because it had been familiar to them their entire lives. This familiarity with human interaction was a very important factor for schools when designing learning plans and creating learning objectives. When the pandemic was at its peak, it was unsafe for schools to continue the traditional face-to-face learning methods, so the government …

Closing The Circle: The Need For Patient Outcomes In The Prehospital Setting, Sydney Key May 2024

Closing The Circle: The Need For Patient Outcomes In The Prehospital Setting, Sydney Key

Honors Theses

The integration of EMS into the healthcare system is relatively new compared to other fields like nursing. As a result, there has been a scarce amount of research performed in the prehospital setting. This research focused on studying the effects of giving detailed feedback to prehospital providers by evaluating the improvements in provider mental health and patient outcomes in cardiac arrest patients. Prehospital providers rarely receive patient outcomes from hospitals. Oftentimes, when someone is experiencing a life-threatening event, EMS providers are forced to “load-and-go” from the point of patient contact, transport drop them to the nearest appropriate hospital, and turn …

New Insights Into T Lymphocyte-Mediated Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Claire Marie Doherty May 2024

New Insights Into T Lymphocyte-Mediated Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Claire Marie Doherty

Biology ETDs

With nearly a third of the global population infected with the protozoan, Toxoplasma gondii, this parasite sits at a unique, immune-mediated interface of health and disease. In healthy individuals, Toxoplasma results in a chronic yet asymptomatic infection of the central nervous system. This quiescent infection is the result of parasite exploitation of host immune barriers, yet Toxoplasma can quickly become an opportunistic pathogen when immunity is disrupted by illness or immunosuppressive therapies. During the HIV-AIDS pandemic, it was observed that once latent Toxoplasma infections became the cause of severe, even fatal, disease in the absence of an intact T …

Utilization And Justification Of Generative Ai Technologies For Schematic Architectural Design, Aaric Celeste May 2024

Utilization And Justification Of Generative Ai Technologies For Schematic Architectural Design, Aaric Celeste

Theses

Today, architecture is heavily assisted by computer programs. As technology advances, these programs will be more impactful in the design space and will become more inseparable as a result. It is nearly certain that architectural design will no longer be as time-consuming and reiterative as it is today. Computer software and AI-assisted tools will be able to interpret information and produce practical designs that architects otherwise couldn’t. It may seem futuristic and a not-in-our-lifetime phenomenon, but it in fact already exists today. Algorithms are already developed to assist and in some cases take over design work. This thesis discovered existing …
