Exploring Staff Burnout In College Access And Retention Programs, Yajaira Nunez

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

The purpose of my research was to develop ways to support staff working in access and retention programs in higher education, who are experiencing or prone to burnout. The guiding questions were (a) How could collaboration with administrators working in access and retention programs in higher education facilitate learning to cope with burnout? and (b) How could strategies be developed collaboratively to address burnout in both current and future staff? I conducted three cycles using appreciative inquiry as a guide with six participants from different institutions between January and March 2024. The cycles included a GroupMe chat, a Zoom retreat, …

Yepa, Shiraz I. Mishra

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Despite the effectiveness of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, American Indians (AIs) have low screening rates in the US. Many AIs receive care at Indian Health Services, Tribal, and Urban Indian (I/T/U) healthcare facilities, where published evidence regarding the implementation of CRC screening interventions is lacking. To address this gap, the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Albuquerque Area Southwest Tribal Epidemiology Center collaborated with two tribally-operated healthcare facilities in New Mexico with the goal of improving CRC screening rates among New Mexico's AI communities.

METHODS: Guided by the principles of Community Based Participatory Research, we engaged …

Should We Move To Suspend Robert’S Rules Forever: A Review And Proposal For Student Government Communication, Harper Estus

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

The purpose of this action research project was to understand and improve how student leaders in student government (senators) communicate with one another during their meetings. My research question was, how can I effectively work with the Associated Student Government (ASG) at the University of San Diego (USD) to improve the senator’s meeting communication through parliamentary practice? The use of Robert’s Rules (parliamentary procedure) is common for student government. I analyzed mixed-method data through three cycles: focus group, survey, and semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that there are pros and cons to meeting structures, most participants are open to different meeting …

Improving Access To Mainehealth Care At Home, Amanda Kunkel, Mhcah Intake Department, Mhcah Scheduling Department, Mhcah Clinical Leadership Team

Operations Transformation

It is known that there are capacity limitations at MaineHealth Care at Home caused by a decrease in staffing. This leads to limited availability of home health services to patients in the community and can also contribute to increased length of stay for patients in acute care hospitals. MaineHealth Care at Home needs a way to measure current capacity to accept referrals and improved systems for communicating with referral sources.

Early Support And Home-Based Interventions For Children Affected By Bipolar Disorder In Parents, Maria Mylonaki

Counselor Education Capstones

This capstone project explores the qualitative differences in the transmissibility of

parental mental illness, specifically bipolar disorder, and the effects the introduction of early support and interventions in their residencies may have. Bipolar disorder (formerly known as manic depression) is a mental health disorder characterized by unusual shifts in mood, activity, energy levels, and concentration that affect the individual’s ability to perform daily tasks (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023). Children of parents with bipolar disorder have a 2.7 times higher risk for developing any psychiatric disorder and a 4 times higher risk for developing a mood disorder in comparison …

Influence Of Sex And Habitat Structure On Morphology, Predation, And Survival Of Sceloporus Consobrinus, In Central Arkansas, Anju Ghimirey May 2024

Influence Of Sex And Habitat Structure On Morphology, Predation, And Survival Of Sceloporus Consobrinus, In Central Arkansas, Anju Ghimirey

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

Lizards are useful in determining links between habitat use, morphology, and performance since they occupy many structurally distinct habitats. Prairie lizards (Sceloporus consobrinus) inhabit three distinct habitat types in Central Arkansas: rocky, forested, and intermediate or mixed habitats. Though geographically close, these habitats have fundamentally different microclimates, substrates, predators, and prey availabilities for lizards. My objectives here are to assess the impact of those structurally different habitats on body temperature, morphology, and predation on prairie lizards. I captured 117 individuals in 2022 and compared those lizards with 809 captures from 2016-2017. The cloacal temperature did not differ among habitats yet …

Reproductive Success And Post-Fledging Ecology Of The American Robin (Turdus Migratorius) In Suburban Areas Of The Arkansas River Valley, Brandon Maiersperger

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

Study of the nesting and post-fledging periods is necessary to properly evaluate avian reproductive success. Birds breeding in suburban areas are threatened by a high abundance of predators and limited habitat availability. American Robins (Turdus migratorius) are common birds in suburban areas across North America, but their breeding ecology is understudied. The goals of my study were to: assess robin nest survival and its relationships with nest characteristics, evaluate fledgling survival, movement, and behavior, and determine the fledging sex ratio and sex-based plumage characteristics of fledglings. I found that robin daily nest survival (0.920) was lower than previous …

The Hero’S Journey, Brianna Tolkacz May 2024

The Hero’S Journey, Brianna Tolkacz

Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals

The Hero’s Journey reflects on the continued fascination with fairytales, myths, and legends through time. This project follows the exploration of these stories, themes, and the lessons they can teach one about themselves and the wider world. Such fictional narratives allow one to process and share their lived experiences: the victories and tragedies, losses and growth. This project follows a winged figure as she fights for her freedom and gains her wings. the journey is messy and raw but still beautiful. The project blends classical oil painting and contemporary sculptural elements to compose an evolving narrative culminating in a dynamic, …

Injustice: Parental Betrayal And The Exploitation Of Child Murder In The United States, Isabella Merlini

Honors Scholar Theses

The following serves as an extensive literature review on the phenomena of filicide and familicide–the ultimate forms of parental betrayal–perpetrated within the United States. Subsequently highlighted is the theme that the people who should always take care of and love their children are sometimes also those who demonically arrange for their children’s very deaths, and while parents have the power to bring children into this world, they do not have the right to remove children from it. An overview of the unique perpetrations, victimologies, psychopathologies, and motivations that contribute to the classifications of filicide and familicide are further provided. Six …

Who Are Creating And Using Open Materials – Considerations For Equity In Oers, Adronisha Frazier May 2024

Who Are Creating And Using Open Materials – Considerations For Equity In Oers, Adronisha Frazier

OER & Beyond - Blog Archive

Whose line is it anyway when we ask, “Whose knowledge are we progressing in the eld of open educational resources (OERs)?” We can attribute deviations of “Whose knowledge are we progressing” to Sandra Harding in 1991, Gloria Ladson-Billings in 2000, and Tara Yosso in 2005. Recently, I’ve seen this phrase in arti cial intelligence discussions about whose knowledge is re ected through technology tools and machine outputs. This conversation extends to interdisciplinary elds, such as arti cial intelligence ethics and open pedagogy. Despite the need for knowledge dispersion, the resources must be visible and accessible. Ideally, a centralized knowledge management …

Liquid Light: Ayahuasca Spirituality And The Santo Daime Tradition, Bonnie Glass-Coffin

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Liquid Light is an important addition to the growing number of published accounts that discuss the use of ayahuasca (known by the name, Daime), and its role within Santo Daime, a fundamentally Christian though highly syncretic new religious movement founded in 1930 in the Amazonian state of Acre by an Afro-Brazilian rubber tapper known to followers as Mestre Irineu. The text is a richly descriptive account of Barnard’s own evolution as a fardado (Santo Daime initiate) and includes first-hand accounts of his participation in many kinds and types of Santo Daime worship services in both the United States …

Politics, Policies, And Procedures: The Iron Triangle Of Implementing Education Reform, Clint Reardon Jr May 2024

Politics, Policies, And Procedures: The Iron Triangle Of Implementing Education Reform, Clint Reardon Jr

Honors College Theses

Education is often seen as a living thing, something that should grow and change with time. However, for far too many people who experience education from both within the school structure and for those who experience education from outside the school structure it can often seem like the educational system is stagnate, dying, and in some cases dead. One shared reason for this perception is perceived barriers in education that stifle creativity and allow educational systems to grow, adapt, and change to meet the needs of the students they serve. This study set out to identify what those barriers are …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a notable clinical problem with multi-factorial risk factors and a multitude of clinical manifestations. It is associated with polyglandular autoimmune syndromes, some familiar and some lesser well known. The specific aim of this scholarly project was to evaluate whether education aimed at providers such as nurse practitioners, nurse practitioner students, physician assistants, and physicians regarding updated diagnostic criteria for vitamin B12 deficiencies as well as associated diseases, specifically autoimmune gastritis, and pernicious anemia, increased their knowledge and ultimately improved clinical practice. The project utilized a pre-test/post-test design with education provided in between. There was an improvement …
