The research contains selected Bible narratives that identify parental responsibilities towards their children and discourses on their successful utility or lack thereof. The study argues that parents and the community have a responsibility …

Supporting Science Identity Development With Course-Based Interventions: Strategies To Improve Undergraduate Student Persistence In Stem, Mariah Maxwell May 2024

Supporting Science Identity Development With Course-Based Interventions: Strategies To Improve Undergraduate Student Persistence In Stem, Mariah Maxwell

Dissertations - ALL

Science identity can be described as the part of oneself that relates to science, and is made up of four components: competence, performance, recognition, and interest. Science identity is important because students who have a strong science identity tend to persist longer in STEM majors and are more likely to attain a scientific career post-graduation than students with a weak science identity. Despite its importance for undergraduate persistence and career attainment, many students struggle to identify as a scientist, especially those who belong to groups that have historically been underserved in STEM. Therefore, exploring the ability of course-based interventions to …

Recovery Of Cyber Manufacturing Systems From False Data Injection Attacks On Sensors By Reinforcement Learning, Romesh Prasad May 2024

Recovery Of Cyber Manufacturing Systems From False Data Injection Attacks On Sensors By Reinforcement Learning, Romesh Prasad

Dissertations - ALL

Cyber-manufacturing systems (CMS) represent the future design vision for manufacturing systems, aiming to enhance product quality, and productivity, and reduce downtime. The third industrial revolution was driven by computer systems and automation, while the fourth industrial revolution was inspired by the internet, network, and connectivity. However, this integration also introduces vulnerabilities, particularly through false data injection attacks on sensors. Sensors play a pivotal role in the automation framework of manufacturing systems spanning five levels: process, operational, supervisory, plant, and enterprise. Sensors are instrumental in communicating information from the process level to the enterprise level. It also enables controllers at the …

Robust Fault Location In Power Systems Transmission Lines Based On Traveling Waves Using Multiple Wavelet Types In An Ensemble Model, Mirjavad Hashemi Gavgani May 2024

Robust Fault Location In Power Systems Transmission Lines Based On Traveling Waves Using Multiple Wavelet Types In An Ensemble Model, Mirjavad Hashemi Gavgani

Dissertations - ALL

Fault location plays a vital role in the operation of power systems. It is the key to fast clearance of the faults and minimizing the duration and costs of power outages. Power networks manifest a complex behavior due to their intricate topological connections, phase asymmetry, and time-varying loads. Traveling Wave (TW) analysis provides an accurate estimate of fault location on the power system transmission lines. In this project, we explore the main concepts and steps of implementing traveling waves for fault location and different methodologies for extracting and analyzing the traveling waves using different wavelets. Then, we present an ensemble …

Enhancing Teacher Training In Rural Ghana Using The Internet Backpack, Jane Appiah-Okyere May 2024

Enhancing Teacher Training In Rural Ghana Using The Internet Backpack, Jane Appiah-Okyere

Dissertations - ALL

This study investigated the interplay of digital capacity building (skills) and infrastructure (Internet access) in shaping teaching and learning practices in a rural community. Educators in rural areas, especially in developing nations, face difficulties in accessing digital resources and Internet connectivity, which hinder the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills into their teaching and learning practices. As an intervention to enhance the digital skills of rural teachers, an Internet Backpack was deployed as the sole Internet connectivity tool during targeted andragogical (an adult leaning framework) teacher professional development (TPD) workshops in Essuekyir, Ghana. Caring For Creation: Catholics, Justice, And Socio-Ecologies In Appalachia, Dominic Wilkins May 2024

Caring For Creation: Catholics, Justice, And Socio-Ecologies In Appalachia, Dominic Wilkins

Dissertations - ALL

Geographers have long studied the challenge of achieving holistic justice. Rather than something found wholly within human relations, in recent years these analyses have increasingly understood justice as socio-ecological. The Catholic Church is a global institution with more than 1.3 billion adherents and millions of employees operating hundreds of thousands of parishes, schools, and other institutions across the world. The Church has long centered justice through both activism and intellectual theorizing. To date, however, geographers have not rigorously engaged this work or the ongoing environmental turn within the Catholic Church and its conceptions of justice. Scholars specializing in religions and …

The Even Harder Cases: How Conceptual Art As A Paradigm Affirms The Viability Of A Theory Of Art, William Galloway Osborne Iii May 2024

The Even Harder Cases: How Conceptual Art As A Paradigm Affirms The Viability Of A Theory Of Art, William Galloway Osborne Iii

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation proposes a theory of art founded on sociocultural accounts of creativity, with conceptual art as its explanatory model. This proposal is a direct response to Dom Lopes’s thesis in Beyond Art, which argues that a theory of art is not viable and that such theorizing should be passed to individual arts. Requirements for a viable theory of art emerge via a sustained critique of Lopes’s arguments. These requirements can be met by turning Lopes’s account of marginal “hard cases” on their head, centralizing the model of conceptual art as explanatory paradigm. Additionally, I introduce the “even harder cases”, …

Numerical Invariants Of Cohen-Macaulay Local And Graded Rings, Richard Francis Bartels May 2024

Numerical Invariants Of Cohen-Macaulay Local And Graded Rings, Richard Francis Bartels

Dissertations - ALL

We characterize different classes of Cohen-Macaulay local rings (R,m, k) with positive Krull di?mension in terms of MCM approximations of finitely-generated R-modules. Assume R has a canonical module. For each finitely-generated R-module M, Auslander’s δ?invariant δR(M) equals the rank of a maximal free direct summand of the minimal MCM approxi?mation XM of M. We have δR(R/m) = 1 if and only if R is a regular local ring. Auslander defined the index of R, denoted index(R), as the infimum of positive integers n such that δR(R/mn ) = 1. When R is Gorenstein, we have index(R) ≤ gℓℓ(R) < ∞, where gℓℓ(R) denotes the generalized Loewy length of R, the smallest positive integer n such that mn ⊆ xR for some system of parameters x for R. We call such a system of parameters a witness to the generalized Loewy length of R. In Chapter 3, we generalize a theorem of Ding, who proved that if R is Gorenstein with infinite residue field k and Cohen-Macaulay associated graded ring grm(R), then gℓℓ(R) = index(R). We prove that if R is a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring with finite index and nonzerodivi?sor x of order t with grm(R)-regular initial form x ∗ , then gℓℓ(R) ≤ index(R) +t −1. We use this estimate to derive a formula for the generalized Loewy length of a one-dimensional hypersurface R = kJx, yK/(f). If z is a witness to gℓℓ(R) such that z ∗ is grm(R)-regular, then gℓℓ(R) = ordR(z)+e(R)−1, where e(R) denotes the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of R. We compute the generalized Loewy lengths of several families {Rn} ∞ n=1 of one-dimensional hypersurfaces over finite and infinite fields such that gℓℓ(Rn) = index(Rn) for all n ≥ 1 or gℓℓ(Rn) = index(Rn) + 1 for all n ≥ 1. Lastly, we study a graded version of the generalized Loewy length of a Noetherian local ring for Noetherian k-algebras (R,m, k), where k is an arbitrary field and m is the irrelevant ideal of R. This invariant is called the generalized graded length of R and denoted ggl(R). After determining bounds for ggl(R) in terms of gℓℓ(R) and the degrees of generators for R, we compute the generalized graded length of numerical semigroup rings. We also characterize witnesses to the generalized graded length of numerical semigroup rings for semigroups with two generators. In Chapter 4, we study criteria for when an MCM module over a Gorenstein complete local ring R is stably isomorphic to an MCM approximation of a finitely-generated R-module of some fixed positive codimension r. If this condition holds for an MCM R-module M, we say with Kato that M satisfies the SCr-condition. If this condition holds for every MCM R-module, we say that R satisfies the SCr-condition. Only the SC1- and SC2- conditions have been characterized for Gorenstein complete local rings R. Kato proved that R satisfies the SC1-condition if and only if R is a domain, and R satisfies the SC2-condition if and only if R is a UFD. For rings of dimension d ≥ 3 and 3 ≤ r ≤ d, we prove an inductive criterion for when an MCM R-module satisfies the SCr-condition when its first syzygy module Ω1 R (M) satisfies the SCr−1-condition. We use this criterion to prove the equivalence of the SCd- and SCd−1-conditions for Gorenstein complete local rings of dimension d ≥ 3 that remain UFDs when factoring out certain regular sequences of length d −2.

Investigating Vocal Development In Humpback Whales: Caller Identification, Acoustic And Movement Behavior, And Comparisons Across Age, Julia Marie Zeh May 2024

Investigating Vocal Development In Humpback Whales: Caller Identification, Acoustic And Movement Behavior, And Comparisons Across Age, Julia Marie Zeh

Dissertations - ALL

Studying variation in individual behavior can elucidate drivers related to factors like age, social context, and the environment. Differences in behavior with age are a product of survival needs and developmental differences as animals physiologically mature and modify their behaviors in response to experience. Learning is of particular interest across taxa because it is fundamental to the development of complex behaviors, from problem-solving to social hierarchies to animal songs and human language. Humpback whales (Megaptera noveaeangliae) exhibit a variety of complex and culturally transmitted behaviors across their range, including a diverse acoustic repertoire. Despite decades of research on adult behavior, …

In this dissertation, representation, participation, and conflict are examined in state-mandated environmental justice councils. A novel dataset is constructed from council meeting minutes to explore patterns across these key concepts at the individual-level, meeting-level, and council level over time. The first essay examines how meeting-level factors – such as participant diversity, attributes of the meeting, and context – associate with meeting-level participation measured as different types of communication. This essay builds on participation research in collaborative governance, exploring participation through the lens of communication. Leveraging multiple OLS regressions, associations between meeting-level factors and participation through communication are explored. The results …

Emotional Perception Of Presidential Candidate Debate Statements: An Examination Of The 2016 U.S. Presidential Debates, Peta-Ann Cherie Long May 2024

Emotional Perception Of Presidential Candidate Debate Statements: An Examination Of The 2016 U.S. Presidential Debates, Peta-Ann Cherie Long

Dissertations - ALL

Presidential campaigns mainly focus on political communication to gather voters’ support for their candidates. Candidates’ ultimate aim is to convince voters to vote for them and not their opponents. Campaign debates are one way to evaluate candidates. Debates provide the candidates a platform to persuade voters to support them over their opponent(s). The candidates stand together and can be analyzed on important issues to the viewers. The statements made by candidates are aimed at winning the elections. James B. Lemert (1993) addresses the question of whether television presidential debates help to inform voters. He argues that while there are arguments …

Although biomaterials surface modification and smart materials science are heavily studied areas, the interface of the two has received substantially less investigation. Without this fundamental understanding, progress in biomaterials science at the interface of cells and dynamic functional materials will be hindered, preventing innovation in diverse biomedical applications. Thus, the goal of this dissertation is to acquire a fundamental understanding on the dynamic effects of shape-memory polymer (SMP) activation on biopolymer surface coatings, and to explore the potential biomedical application of this novel, material platform. To better understand the synergistic effects of surface modification and dynamic, shape memory activation, the …

Climate Justice Before The Anthropocene: How Inclement Weather Shaped British And Irish Romanticism, Lauren Cooper May 2024

Climate Justice Before The Anthropocene: How Inclement Weather Shaped British And Irish Romanticism, Lauren Cooper

Dissertations - ALL

Climate Justice Before the Anthropocene examines British and Irish Romantic literature through the lens of climate. The tail end of the Little Ice Age and two volcanic eruptions halfway around the world contributed to severe and unpredictable climate patterns in the British Isles between 1790 and 1820 that exacerbated existing social inequities and economic distresses. In poems and novels that engaged with this extended climate crisis, the project argues, we encounter an emergent discourse of environmental justice that undercuts the celebrations of “nature,” the advocacy of human and animal rights, and the defenses of art that scholars so often identify …

Nowadays 9 of every 10 women take at least one medicine during their pregnancy. However, unfortunately, many pregnant women have to face a severe problem that there is not enough evidence to prove the safety of their medication, and an appropriate medication might cause birth defects or even infant death. Researchers need an accurate and reliable drug developmental platform. Compared to the traditional animal and cell models, organoids have the ability to highly mimic the human organ developmental process, which allow researchers investigate the developmental toxicity to human development with organoid platform. The goal of this work is to explore …

Urban Scale Vehicle-To-Building-To-Grid Integration Leveraging Human Mobility Modeling, Yapan Liu May 2024

Urban Scale Vehicle-To-Building-To-Grid Integration Leveraging Human Mobility Modeling, Yapan Liu

Dissertations - ALL

In the United States (U.S.), the buildings sector consumes about 76% of electricity use and 40% of all primary energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Occupant behavior, which includes the presence of people in the space, interactions between the occupant and building systems, and occupant adaptations to the built environment, has a significant impact on the energy consumption of buildings. Many researchers have investigated occupant behaviors at a single building scale, however, very few studies have been conducted at the community scale or urban scale. Our previous review study introduced human mobility modeling approach from other domains into the …

On Multi-Sensor Adaptive Birth Theory For Labeled Random Finite Sets Tracking, Anthony Trezza May 2024

On Multi-Sensor Adaptive Birth Theory For Labeled Random Finite Sets Tracking, Anthony Trezza

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation provides a scalable, multi-sensor measurement adaptive track initiation technique for labeled random finite set filters. The lack of a well-defined, systematic approach is problematic for many applications, especially when fusing ambiguous sensor measurements. We begin by showing that a naive solution leads to an exponential number of newborn components in the number of sensors. An efficient solution is derived by formulating a ranked assignment truncation problem. A truncation criterion is established for a labeled multi-Bernoulli random finite set birth density that has a bounded L1 error in the generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli posterior density. This criterion is used to …

Research has found that diversity has a positive impact on innovation, but the profile of higher education leaders has not become drastically more diverse. Although there have been modest changes, they have not been consistent with the changing demographics of college students. The few high-profile presidential appointments of Black women that have received media attention have been the exception rather than the norm. This dissertation used critical discourse analysis and content analysis to examine how eight Black women college presidents were written about in the media. The research questions explored the discourse about Black women college presidents and their leadership …

Turbulent Landscapes: Reading The Borders Of Contemporary Latinx And Indigenous Literatures, Florencia Lauria May 2024

Turbulent Landscapes: Reading The Borders Of Contemporary Latinx And Indigenous Literatures, Florencia Lauria

Dissertations - ALL

Engaging with contemporary Latinx and Indigenous border literatures, films, and other cultural productions, my dissertation considers the tensions between Latinx migration and Indigenous sovereignty, claiming that their uneasy relation demands sustained critical and political attention. While Latinx cross-border migration and Indigenous peoples’ sovereignty struggles share important connections in the context of a colonial racial capitalist system of oppression, they cannot be easily collapsed into each other. Expanding upon Marisol de la Cadena’s concept of “partial connection,” my dissertation counters theoretical discourses that insist on commonality as the basis for Indigenous and Latinx intragroup solidarities. Moving beyond Gloria Anzaldúa’s borderlands concept …

The climate crisis is an environmental issue that affects people of all walks of life but has disproportionate effects on those living in impoverished communities. The climate crisis therefore is not only an issue of environmental justice, but also social justice. However, incorporating environmental issues within education has typically been left to science classrooms. Teaching for environmental social justice, however, has the potential to extend beyond science content and science classrooms, and instead be incorporated in content across all academic disciplines. This dissertation is a teaching experiment that explored the ways adolescent preservice teachers from various disciplines develop their teaching …

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a complex and widespread disease with limited pharmacotherapies. Preclinical animal models of AUD use a variety of voluntary alcohol consumption procedures to recapitulate different phases of AUD, including binge alcohol consumption and dependence. However, voluntary alcohol consumption in mice is widely variable, making it difficult to reproduce results across labs. Accumulating evidence indicates that different brands of commercially available rodent chow can profoundly influence alcohol intake. In this study, we investigated the effects of three commercially available and widely used rodent diet formulations on alcohol consumption and preference in C57BL/6 J mice using the 24 …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Osvlado Golijov’s The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind, scored for klezmer clarinet and string quartet, remains one of his most influential works since its premier in 1994. Inspiration for the work came from the writings of Rabbi Isaac the Blind, a prominent 13th century figurehead in the branch of Jewish mysticism known as Kabbalah. In Kabbalah, symbols known as the sefirot are emanations of creation and the key to unlocking the divine secrets of the God-head. The analysis presented in this document combines musical gesture theory with Kabbalistic concepts for new perspectives on Golijov’s …
