The Effects Of Perceived Support, Cultural Humility, And Self-Compassion On Psychological Well-Being Mediated By Ethnic Identity Among Asian International Students In Counseling Programs, Yu-Hsun Peng

Dissertations - ALL

The present study used a path analysis to examine the direct and indirect effects of perceived support, cultural humility, and self-compassion as acculturation conditional variables on Asian international counseling students’ psychological well-being and how the relationships mediated by ethnic identity. The study was based on Acculturation Theory which captured the relationships between acculturation conditions, orientations, and outcomes by Arends-Tóth and Van de Vijver (2007) from a protective and strength-based perspective. The final sample, following criteria and snowball sampling, included 83 Asian international students enrolled in counseling programs. The study employed validated and reliable instruments to measure the different levels of …

The Role Of Acculturation Strategies In Relation To Honor And Sexuality Attitudes, Sexism, Conservatism, And Religiosity Among Turkish Immigrants Living In The U.S., Ayse Duygu Cakirsoy Aslan May 2024

The Role Of Acculturation Strategies In Relation To Honor And Sexuality Attitudes, Sexism, Conservatism, And Religiosity Among Turkish Immigrants Living In The U.S., Ayse Duygu Cakirsoy Aslan

Dissertations - ALL

The purpose of this research was to understand the complex relationships between acculturation strategies and attitudes towards sexuality (particularly the specific Turkish-related concept of “namus”) in the Turkish acculturating community. Studies exploring the acculturation process of other immigrant groups in the U.S. have revealed a generally liberalizing impact of different acculturation processes on gender role and sexuality attitudes of immigrants. However, there has been very little work specifically focusing on the Turkish immigrant community, particularly in the American context. Turkey is one of the countries known to have a culture of honor, where family honor (namus) is tied to a …

Glittered Realities, Dramatic Bodies: Abject, Camp, And Empathy, Grace Otten

Theses - ALL

Glittered Realities, Dramatic Bodies: Abject, Camp, and Empathy explores the roles of disgust, social performance, and compassion within my art practice. This essay examines empathetic aesthetics as a tool for strengthening the relationship between the artist and the viewer, while also delving into the repulsiveness of abject art and the performative elements of Camp. Through thematic sections focusing on sculpture and video performance art, Glittered Realities, Dramatic Bodies: Abject, Camp, and Empathy illustrates how bodily experience and identity exploration contends that understanding human vulnerability and the interplay between abjection, theatricality, and empathy enriches both an art practice and worldview.

Anti-Automobile Supremacy: Social Media Narratives And The Popular Resistance Against Car-Centric Urban Landscapes, Allen Huang

Theses - ALL

The purpose of this research paper is to discover the content strategies employed by social media content creators living in North America who try to use their platforms and voices to build a popular counternarrative against the systemic framework of automobile supremacy. Automobile supremacy refers to the systemic prioritization of automobiles as the predominant mode of transportation through intentional design that justifies compulsory consumption while downplaying dangerous consequences. To understand content creator strategies, this study interviewed 25 adult social media content creators who live in North America who regularly share anti-automobile supremacy content and asked them 15 semi-structured questions to …

Nomadic Culture And The Pre-Islamic Era Of Turkic Civilizations: A Study Of Shamanism, Lifestyle, And A Modern Societal Reinterpretation, Atagun Ilhan

Theses - ALL

This thesis serves as an exploration of my cultural heritage during the pre-Islamic era of the Turks. I find this topic particularly significant because the pre-Islamic era often receives little attention in Turkey's cultural discourse, and there are even efforts to erase this era, largely influenced by the indoctrination policies of Islamic-driven Turkish governments. My aim is to delve into the cultural, religious, and diverse modes of living of the pre-Islamic nomadic Turkic people who inhabited Eastern Asia. The investigation begins by elucidating Nomadism within its geographical context. Furthermore, it delves into cultural and religious aspects such as shamanism, temples, …

Visualizing The First Visit To The Red Cliff Structural Analysis, Jinning Wang

Theses - ALL

This article explores how individuals can achieve spiritual freedom in the face of adversity and the twists of fate, drawing inspiration from the famous ancient Chinese poet Su Shi's First Visit to the Red Cliff. The thesis will work in two directions: first, from a philosophical and Buddhist perspective, it analyzes Su Shi's path to self-redemption during the creation of First Visit to the Red Cliff. Second, it combines my own experiences and dialogue with Su Shi in my artworks. The thesis takes both Su Shi's and my perspectives, using Su Shi's challenges in his life as a starting point …

The Representation Of Dreams In Illustration, Jin Zhu

Theses - ALL

This research aims to delve into the diverse portrayals of dreams in creation, examining the interplay between dreams and reality through a blend of literature review and case analysis. As a distinctive psychological phenomenon, dreams offer artists abundant inspiration for their work. Conducting a profound study on the connection between surrealism and dreams, which boast distinctive modes of expression and psychological import, can help attain a broader comprehension of how artists seek artistic expression through the depiction of situations in dreams. Through the analysis of the characteristics of dreams, our insight into their ability to surpass the limitations of ordinary …

The Effects Of Classification Versus Observation During Category Learning, Enoch Sarakpo May 2024

The Effects Of Classification Versus Observation During Category Learning, Enoch Sarakpo

Theses - ALL

We report a category-learning experiment that examines the learning outcomes of classification and observational training methods across three category structures. Thus, we crossed training (classification vs. observation) and category type (natural vs. featural vs. relational). Some subjects classified the stimuli (side-by-side bird pairs) and received corrective feedback after each response, whereas others studied these stimuli, wherein they were presented with the corresponding category label. The posttest was an endorsement task made up of repeated and novel items. We did find an observation training advantage, as subjects in the observation training were better in the natural and relational categories for the …

A Systematic Review Of The Acceptability Of Functional Behavior Assessments And Behavior Intervention Plans, Siani Ym Amidon May 2024

A Systematic Review Of The Acceptability Of Functional Behavior Assessments And Behavior Intervention Plans, Siani Ym Amidon

Theses - ALL

Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) are assessment and intervention procedures that are used to address maladaptive behaviors among school children and youth. Kazdin (1977) defined intervention acceptability as the subjective evaluation and judgment of intervention success, which can impact intervention development, effectiveness, and usage. Given the limited research in the field, the purpose of this systematic review was to explore the extent to which acceptability assessments have been conducted regarding FBAs and BIPs and how this information may be used to inform intervention development or modification. PsycINFO and ERIC(EBSCO) database searches identified 11 studies, including a …

Indigenous Artistic Activism And The (Re)Envisioned Landscape: Decolonizing Settler Land Knowledge, Hannah Lorell Sparks May 2024

Indigenous Artistic Activism And The (Re)Envisioned Landscape: Decolonizing Settler Land Knowledge, Hannah Lorell Sparks

Theses - ALL

In this thesis I investigate mimetic Indigenous artwork as a productive site of settler colonial disruption. More specifically, I attend to the potential of these artworks to disorient romantic habits of viewing landscapes. Framed as a critique of settler logics, I argue that the underlying ideologies of Euro-American romantic landscape art have tracked from the 19th-century to today to produce an illusory, aestheticized view of nature as grand and empty, distancing settlers from the material realities of land use and the violence of settler colonialism. In a contributory attempt to decolonize settler understandings of and relations to land, I look …

Social Closeness And Body Mass Index: Implications For Adolescent Suicide, Megan Milligan May 2024

Social Closeness And Body Mass Index: Implications For Adolescent Suicide, Megan Milligan

Theses - ALL

Research on Body Mass Index (BMI) as a predictor of adolescent suicidality has been mixed, and though some extant findings point to an association between elevated BMI and suicide, it remains unclear how suicidality differs between categorical weight groups (i.e., healthy weight, overweight, obese weight determined by BMI percentile). Adolescents with elevated BMI face disproportionate risk for social rejection and bullying, both of which predict suicidality. Thus, more information is needed regarding between-group differences in suicide-related outcomes by weight status and potential social factors that may be protective across weight groups. The present study leveraged a nationally-representative dataset to examine …

Black Walnut Tree Health Distribution In An Urban Landscape, Gabriel Smith May 2024

Black Walnut Tree Health Distribution In An Urban Landscape, Gabriel Smith

Theses - ALL

Food access and climate change are two of the greatest challenges facing an increasingly urbanized society. Within cities, trees play a critical role for people and the planet, providing solutions to food insecurity and closing the metabolic rift. Trees provide food for human and non-human communities, shelter for biodiversity, and microclimate regulation. In this context, the health of trees is paramount because of the connection between species health and the capacity to provide services. Eastern black walnut (BW) trees (Juglans nigra) are an important and underutilized native nut tree in the Northeastern US. The kernel has the highest protein content …

Frightened Birds: An Exploration Of Insecurity And Its Artistic Expression, Chenyu Wang May 2024

Frightened Birds: An Exploration Of Insecurity And Its Artistic Expression, Chenyu Wang

Theses - ALL

This thesis aims to examine the root causes of human insecurity and to explore how to live with insecurity, both theoretically and visually. The nature of insecurity is further explored by analyzing it in a philosophical sense and making an analogy with Albert Camus’ understanding of “absurdity.” As a universal feeling, insecurity has enormous potential to be explored as an artistic topic. Creating and thinking from this feeling can trigger the audience’s emotional resonance and inspire more thinking in response. Insecurity is about meaning, about human longing and expectation, about the absurdity that one cannot escape. By analyzing insecurity, one …

Positionings, Carolyn Grace Crowley

Theses - ALL

This thesis relates to my experiences as a queer woman, who was raised Catholic, grappling with my place in contemporary womanhood and how this confluence informed my work as a visual artist. Applying the visual styles and aesthetics of depictions of saints, expressionist and baroque painting to create a modern reflection on my femininity through painting and performance. This paper first explores my background, the meaning of my paintings, then how their meaning informed my technical and formal choices. Contextual And Positional Associations In Free And Serial Recall, Nathan Burns May 2024

Contextual And Positional Associations In Free And Serial Recall, Nathan Burns

Theses - ALL

The research in this thesis presents a novel experiment and analyses to characterize effects in episodic memory which have classically been developed using different classes of theories. An encoding design was used which typically offers support for positional coding theory, phonological similarity among words in a studied list, with a recall paradigm which typically offers support for retrieved context theory, free recall. This experiment manipulated recall task, serial recall and free recall, as well as the presence and order of similar items across three possible list types. Analyses focused on differences in recall probability, recall errors, and recall transitions by …

Bridging The Gap: Neglect And Misunderstanding In Mother-Daughter Relationships, Yuhui Zheng May 2024

Bridging The Gap: Neglect And Misunderstanding In Mother-Daughter Relationships, Yuhui Zheng

Theses - ALL

This thesis examines the conflicts between mothers and daughters within the Chinese cultural background. First, it states the domestic and social factors that impact the dynamic of maternal relationships with daughters in China. Then, by analyzing artworks like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Turning Red, it sheds light on how mother-daughter conflicts are represented in the plot and how filmmakers conceive such films to showcase mother-daughter relationships artistically. Finally, the thesis concludes by combining the above research with my own experiences, culminating in a visual thesis about a mother-daughter pair’s journey from conflict to reconciliation. The dissertation provides an …

Analysis Of Dilemmas And Self-Expression In The Highly Sensitive Person, Zixiao Song May 2024

Analysis Of Dilemmas And Self-Expression In The Highly Sensitive Person, Zixiao Song

Theses - ALL

This thesis primarily analyzes the definition of the highly sensitive person (HSP), the psychological issues this personality trait may cause, and coping mechanisms. It explores the experiences and challenges of HSPs, as described by psychologists and authors with extensive research in this field, such as Dr. Aron, to explore the inner world and coping mechanisms of highly sensitive individuals. Subsequently, through analyzing classic films and picture books such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower and All Too Much for Oliver, I observed how certain characters display the behavioral traits and psychological activities of HSPs from an artistic perspective. Finally, …

“Don’T Rock The Boat:” The Social Reproduction Of Inequality In Medical Education, Hannah Connolly May 2024

“Don’T Rock The Boat:” The Social Reproduction Of Inequality In Medical Education, Hannah Connolly

Dissertations - ALL

Social factors are the primary drivers of health inequity in the United States, and medical education has agreed that trainees should develop the skills to acknowledge and address them. However, there is evidence that medical trainees remain underprepared to address the social drivers of health in practice, despite curricular innovations dedicated to this aim. This dissertation is comprised of three papers based on a year-long hybrid ethnography of third- year medical students in the United States. Utilizing participant observation, observant participation, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups, I explore how medical students come to understand their role in addressing the social …

Muertos Made In México: Necrocapitalismo En La Cultura Mexicana, Luis A. Gamboa May 2024

Muertos Made In México: Necrocapitalismo En La Cultura Mexicana, Luis A. Gamboa

(Crip)Ping Art Therapy: Imagining Alternatives To Ableism In Mental Health Treatment, Sara Bessette

Theses - ALL

This paper explores how the lived experiences of disabled art therapists can inform, through a qualitative and arts-based research approach, a theory and possible applications for improving accessibility within the field of art therapy for both disabled persons seeking intervention and for disabled professionals working in the field. The student researcher collected data through interviews with three self-identifying disabled art therapists or art therapists in training. The interviews were transcribed, coded and analyzed to develop a definition of accessibility, along with a grounded theory on how accessibility can be improved within the field of art therapy. The study explored possible …

The Weight Of Existence, Jared Leclaire May 2024

The Weight Of Existence, Jared Leclaire

Theses - ALL

Torn between our instinctual will to live and our conscious knowing of life’s inevitable end, our mortality creates an existential tear in our being. This fissure is the birthplace of a meaningful existence. Throughout my artwork I express the rhythmic cadences of the human body and wrestle with the transient nature of being through the utility of sculpture and performance. The artwork does not provide any measurable outcome, only a deepening of feeling for what it means to be alive.

Towards Dignity: Understanding The Relationship Between Food Banks & The Right To Food In The United States, Marguerite Leek May 2024

Towards Dignity: Understanding The Relationship Between Food Banks & The Right To Food In The United States, Marguerite Leek

Theses - ALL

In the United States, there is no legal right to food. The right to food is more than food security, it encompasses dignity, access, choice, financial security, and more. Rather than addressing food insecurity through a human rights-based approach, the US relies on a complex system of emergency food providers, including food banks. Food banks most often take a charity approach to providing individuals with food, failing to meaningfully recognize or address the structural causes of hunger and poverty. In recent years there have been increased efforts made by civil society to move conversation and state level policy in the …

I use photography and video to articulate these themes and my vulnerability.

Master Of None: Living, Thinking And Co-Creating With Unruly Frigid Bodies, Greeshma Chenni Veettil May 2024

Master Of None: Living, Thinking And Co-Creating With Unruly Frigid Bodies, Greeshma Chenni Veettil

Theses - ALL

This thesis explores the primary modes of my artistic practice, which involve paying attention to bodily sensations, posing questions about the ordinary, and engaging in purposeful drifts of inquiry. Through a loose assemblage of practices centered around ice, static photographs, and my own brown body, I delve into the vitality and transgressions inherent in these seemingly inert beings. My work draws upon feminist scholarship on embodiment and employs affective engagement as a methodology for unlearning. Disparate accounts are considered through a polyamorous engagement with diverse disciplines. In doing so, I underscore the importance of unbound curiosity over linearly connected deductions …
