Initiating Access To Palliative Care Earlier In Pediatric Oncology Patients, Anita Sharma

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Background: Pediatric oncology patients should be referred to palliative care early but despite research indicating the clear benefits, there is still a delay in referring patients. One of the reasons include lack of understanding amongst providers on what palliative care is. Palliative care provides symptom management, emotional support and helps the patient and family with difficult decision making.

Objectives: This project aimed to increase the number of early referrals to palliative care. The Pediatric Palliative Care Screening Tool (PaPas) was utilized to help identify the triggers which should prompt the referral.

Methods: A chart review of patients diagnosed with …

Synthesis And Regioselective Functionalization Of Tetrafluorobenzo-[Α]-Fused Bopypy Dyes, Sebastian O. Oloo, Guanyu Zhang, Petia Bobadova-Parvanova, Seleen Al Horani, Masa Al Horani, Frank R. Fronczek, Kevin M. Smith, Maria Da Graça H. Vicente

Faculty Publications

The synthesis of a new bis-BF2 tetrafluorobenzo-[α]-fused BOPYPY dye from 4,5,6,7-tetrafluoroisoindole and 2-hydrazinopyrazine is reported. The regioselectivity of nucleophilic substitution reactions at the periphery of the tetrafluorinated BOPYPY and its α-bromo derivative were investigated using N-, O-, S-, and C-based nucleophiles. Among the aromatic fluorine atoms, the F2 atom is consistently regioselectively substituted, except when the α-position contains a thiophenol group; in this case, F4 is substituted instead due to stabilizing π-π-stacking between the two aromatic groups. The α-bromo BOPYPY derivative also reacts under Stille cross-coupling reaction conditions to produce the corresponding α-substituted product. The spectroscopic properties of …

Perspective—Surface-Display Techniques In Electrochemical Biosensor Designs For Health Monitoring, Courtney J. Weber, Megan D. Whisonant, Olivia M. Clay, Olja Simoska

Faculty Publications

Enzymatic and microbial electrochemical biosensors integrate enzymes and microorganisms as biological recognition elements into the sensor design and functionality. Enzyme-based sensors offer high sensitivity and selectivity for target analyte detection. However, these have limited stability necessary for continuous analyte monitoring. Contrarily, microbe-based electrochemical sensors provide a means for continuous analyte sensing but are associated with challenges related to analyte selectivity in complex samples. To address these limitations, surface-display methods, which bind enzymes to microbial surfaces, enhance biosensor selectivity and sensitivity. This perspective outlines the application of surface-display techniques, offering a promising avenue for health monitoring.

‘Mary Gardens’ Bring Catholic Piety To The Garden, Kayla Harris, Bridget Retzloff May 2024

‘Mary Gardens’ Bring Catholic Piety To The Garden, Kayla Harris, Bridget Retzloff

Marian Library Faculty Publications

Each spring, some Catholics plant flowers around a statue of the Virgin Mary, reviving a tradition that goes back to medieval England when holy figures were remembered and shared through plant and flower names.

In Mary gardens, plants and flowers have specific Marian names or religious names in addition to their botanical and common names. For example, the plant today known as foxglove or Digitalis purpurea was once known as “Our Lady’s Glove.” Mary gardens also usually include a statue or image of Mary, sometimes holding the infant Jesus, as a focal point for devotion.

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

We previously reported a single-cell adhesion micro tensile tester (SCAμTT) fabricated from IP-S photoresin with two-photon polymerization (TPP) for investigating the mechanics of a single cell-cell junction under defined tensile loading. A major limitation of the platform is the autofluorescence of IP-S, the photoresin for TPP fabrication, which significantly increases background signal and makes fluorescent imaging of stretched cells difficult. In this study, we report the design and fabrication of a new SCAμTT platform that mitigates autofluorescence and demonstrate its capability in imaging a single cell pair as its mutual junction is stretched. By employing a two-material design using IP-S …

Deep learning (DL) models have performed tremendously well in image classification. This good performance can be attributed to the availability of massive data in most domains. However, some domains are known to have few datasets, especially the health sector. This makes it difficult to develop domain-specific high-performing DL algorithms for these fields. The field of health is critical and requires accurate detection of diseases. In the United States Gastrointestinal diseases are prevalent and affect 60 to 70 million people. Ulcerative colitis, polyps, and esophagitis are some gastrointestinal diseases. Colorectal polyps is the third most diagnosed malignancy in the world. This …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a novel control framework for the collaboration of an aerial robot and a ground vehicle that is connected via a taut tether is proposed. The framework is based on a leader-follower paradigm. The leader follows a desired trajectory while the motion of the follower is controlled by an admittance controller using an extended state observer to estimate the tether force. Additionally, a velocity estimator is also incorporated to accurately assess the leader’s velocity. An essential feature of our system is its adaptability, enabling role switching between the robots when needed. Furthermore, the synchronization performance of the robots …

Domestic Exotic: Dispossession And Desire In South Florida 20th C Tourism, Emily Nelms

Masters of Environmental Design Theses

Domestic Exotic, considers the conditions that led to the rise of cultural tourism in Florida and examines Yale University’s involvement in this economic phenomenon. Cultural tourism is defined as site-seeing attractions where performers interact with visitors under fabricated conditions. At these sites, ‘the spectacle of the other’ was demarcated onto specific bodies, creating a collective imaginary that helped to shape the infrastructure and public thought of Florida as a travel destination for Euro-American audiences. This document supports an exhibition at the Yale Peabody Museum titled, The Resonance of Things Unseen: Indigenous Sovereignty, Institutional Accession, and Private Correspondence (March 26 - …

Authorizing Violence: Spatial Techniques Of Citizenship Politics In Northeast India, Samarth Vachhrajani May 2024

Authorizing Violence: Spatial Techniques Of Citizenship Politics In Northeast India, Samarth Vachhrajani

Masters of Environmental Design Theses

Authorizing Violence: Spatial Techniques of Citizenship Politics in Northeast India studies the spatial and legal instruments through which Hindu Nationalism and its political front, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), operates in Northeast India. I document the means through which authoritarian power has been introduced into a democratic structure of governance. Emphasizing the role of architecture and spatial knowledge, I attend to how the violence of disenfranchisement and dispossession is legitimized under the force of law.

For this, Chapter 1, entitled 'Legislating Containment,' turns to the legal instrument of citizenship and studies the Goalpara detention center and multi-purpose criminal …

Interpretation of post-AIA IPR estoppel, codified in U.S.C. § 315(e)(2), is an issue at the forefront of patent litigation and plays an important role in the litigation process and strategy. The Federal Cir-cuit’s April 2023 ruling in Ironburg Inventions Ltd. v. Valve Corp., adopted the “skilled searcher standard” and provided some clarity re-garding the meaning of the § 315(e)(2) language, “reasonably could have raised.” While Ironburg did hold that prior art which “reasonably could have been raised” is that which “a skilled searcher conducting a diligent search reasonably would have been expected to discover,” questions pertaining to what exactly is …

Iconic Copiestm, Felicia Caponigri May 2024

Iconic Copiestm, Felicia Caponigri

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

There is a word that is prevalent today in marketing campaigns, ed-itorials, and our everyday language: iconic. “Iconic” is not only preva-lent as a word in everyday life. Iconic can also have legal significance. As I introduce in this article, the concept of iconic and its use by brands in trademark registrations, oppositions, and litigation has significant and underappreciated consequences under the law. There has yet been no study on the word “iconic” or the legal significance of iconic, de-spite the word’s creeping use in legal filings and claims. My article fills this gap by introducing the concept of iconic …
