Dental caries is a common human oral disease worldwide, caused by an acid-producing bacteria Streptococcus mutans. The use of synthetic drugs and antibiotics to prevent dental caries has been increasing, but this can lead to severe side effects. To solve this issue, developing and developed countries have resorted to herbal medicines as an alternative to synthetic drugs for the treatment and prevention of dental caries. Therefore, there is an urgent need for plant-derived products to treat such diseases. Bacopa monnieri, a well-documented medicinal plant, contains 52 phytocompounds, including the pentacyclic triterpenoid metabolite known as asiatic acid (ASTA). Hence, …

Optical Transport Of Ultracold Atoms, David Vera
Optical Transport Of Ultracold Atoms, David Vera
Undergraduate Honors Theses
At temperatures near absolute zero, bosons form a macroscopic quantum state that can be manipulated and imaged in a very controlled and tunable way. To reach these extreme temperatures near absolute zero, advanced methods in cooling, including laser and evaporative cooling, must be used. In addition to these techniques for cooling, atoms must also be held up against the constant pull of gravity, so additional trapping techniques using lasers and magnets are used. In our lab at University of San Diego, we are implementing a tunable lens system (TLS) to optically transfer atoms to a more optically accessible location. A …
Probing Sterile Neutrino Decays In The Adolescent Universe With Big Bang Nucleosynthesis And Large Scale Structure, Darius Vera
Probing Sterile Neutrino Decays In The Adolescent Universe With Big Bang Nucleosynthesis And Large Scale Structure, Darius Vera
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The early universe provides a unique opportunity for researching neutrinos because in these dense and hot places, neutrinos have significant interactions with each other and everything else in the plasma of the early universe. One issue in the current cosmological paradigm is the lithium problem, where there is a discrepancy between predicted versus observed abundances of lithium produced during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. In this paper, we look beyond the Standard Model to try and address this discrepancy by using the early universe as a laboratory to study the decay of sterile neutrinos into Standard model particles and its effect on …
Servant Leadership In The Periodical Literature Of Librarianship, Simone Clunie, Darlene Parrish
Servant Leadership In The Periodical Literature Of Librarianship, Simone Clunie, Darlene Parrish
Library Scholarship
Leadership is one of the most critical factors in the success or failure of an organization and can greatly impact the health and well-being of all participants, especially lower participants. (Kendrick, Kaetrena Davis, 2020). In Robert Greenleaf’s 1970 book, The Servant as Leader, he posits that a leader should be a servant first, seeking the health and development of all participants in an organization. This research project investigates the number of articles published in the periodical literature of librarianship about servant leadership, the nature of the coverage, and if servant leadership is being implemented in libraries as it was …

Estimation Of Useful-Stage Energy Returns On Investment For Fossil Fuels And Implications For Renewable Energy Systems, Emmanuel Aramendia, Paul E. Brockway, Peter G. Taylor, Jonathan B. Norman, Matthew K. Heun, Zeke Marshal;
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
The net energy implications of the energy transition have so far been analysed at best at the final energy stage. Here we argue that expanding the analysis to the useful stage is crucial. We estimate fossil fuelsʼ useful-stage energy returns on investment (EROIs) over the period 1971–2020, globally and nationally, and disaggregate EROIs by end use. We find that fossil fuelsʼ useful-stage EROIs (~3.5:1) are considerably lower than at the final stage (~8.5:1), due to low final-to-useful efficiencies. Further, we estimate the final-stage EROI for which electricity-yielding renewable energy would deliver the same net useful energy as fossil fuels (EROI …
‘Green Is The Color Of The Luxuriant Vegetation Of Our Motherland’: Marcus Garvey, Temporality, And Wilderness As A Repeating Phase, Colin Fisher
History: Faculty Scholarship
Like other nationalists of the early twentieth century, the Harlem-based Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey invoked landscape to rally potential citizens across lines of difference and imagine national community. The centrality he and his organization, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), gave to nature can be seen in the Pan-African flag, the green stripe of which symbolized the “luxuriant vegetation of our Motherland.” But unlike European and European American nationalists, Garvey understood time as cyclical rather than linear, which meant that he saw wilderness not as a national starting place to be preserved in national parks but rather as a repeating phase.Garvey’s …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
New quality productivity (NQP) is a strategic concept that can be defined as all economic activities that can contribute to enhancing the technological content and value-added of products based on technological progress. Discussions on NQP will have to have a scientific sense of the industrial upgrading on the basis of technological progress, avoid restricting NQP to some specific areas of technological development, and treat NQP as technologically deterministic. Empirically speaking, the development of NQP can focus on the three core production factors of basic research, applied technology, and the financial system. In addition, it is necessary to provide an effective …

Deep Clustering Of Tabular Data By Weighted Gaussian Distribution Learning, Shourav B. Rabbani, Ivan V. Medri, Manar D. Samad
Computer Science Faculty Research
Deep learning methods are primarily proposed for supervised learning of images or text with limited applications to clustering problems. In contrast, tabular data with heterogeneous features pose unique challenges in representation learning, where deep learning has yet to replace traditional machine learning. This paper addresses these challenges in developing one of the first deep clustering methods for tabular data: Gaussian Cluster Embedding in Autoencoder Latent Space (G-CEALS). G-CEALS is an unsupervised deep clustering framework for learning the parameters of multivariate Gaussian cluster distributions by iteratively updating individual cluster weights. The G-CEALS method presents average rank orderings of 2.9(1.7) and 2.8(1.7) …
