Blood-filled cysts of the heart valves are frequently reported at postpartum autopsies of infants. They are seen as round nodules mostly in the paediatric age group in infants less than 2 months of age and disappear spontaneously within 6 months of life. We report a unique case of an 11-month-old girl who presented at a tertiary healthcare hospital in 2022 with a blood-filled cyst on the posterior leaflet of the pulmonary valve that was successfully treated. This case report highlights the characteristics and course of a paediatric patient with blood-filled cysts. Further studies are yet needed to better understand the …

Peri-Ictal Water Drinking In An Omani Patient With Bilateral Mesial Temporal Sclerosis, Younis Al-Mufargi, Haifa Alabri, Arunodaya Gujjar
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Peri-ictal water drinking (PIWD) is a rare vegetative manifestation of temporal lobe epilepsy without a definite lateralisation value. We report a case of PIWD in a 22-year-old Omani male patient with post-concussion syndrome and epilepsy presented to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2021 for evaluation of paroxysmal events. His behaviour of PIWD was misinterpreted by his family until characterised in the epilepsy-monitoring unit as a manifestation of epilepsy that was treated medically. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the second reported case in the region.

Persistent hydrocephalus is common in children after resection of posterior fossa tumours. However, occurrence of subdural hygroma is very rare. We report the case of a 14-month-old child who presented at a paediatric neurology clinic in Muscat, Oman in 2021 who developed a tense subdural hygroma with stable hydrocephalus, in the early postoperative period, following posterior fossa tumour resection. We describe the distinctive clinical, radiological and pathological features associated with the development of a tense subdural hygroma. We also discuss the management by cerebrospinal fluid diversion, which includes either a ventriculoperitoneal or subduroperitoneal shunt. This unique condition is distinguished from …
Nostalgia Marketing: An Integrative Framework, Yasamin Mehdian Rad
Nostalgia Marketing: An Integrative Framework, Yasamin Mehdian Rad
University Honors Theses
Nostalgia is a longstanding yet evolving concept in marketing, employed to evoke sentimental longing for the past. It is a complex emotion that can invoke warmth, happiness, sadness, and melancholy, and can be directed towards both personal memories and imaginative pasts--times and places that one has never experienced. This dual nature of nostalgia, categorized into personal and imaginative nostalgia, offers a powerful emotional appeal that marketers leverage to influence consumer behavior. Since the 1950s, the use of nostalgia in marketing has increased significantly, allowing brands to forge deep emotional connections with consumers. Despite its prevalent use, research on nostalgia's impact …
Composition-Theoretic Series And False Theta Functions, William Keith, Robert Schneider, Andrew V. Sills
Composition-Theoretic Series And False Theta Functions, William Keith, Robert Schneider, Andrew V. Sills
Michigan Tech Publications
Many natural partition-theoretic series can be equally readily interpreted as compo-sition-theoretic series, but this viewpoint seems to have not been much employed in either theory. We consider some of the consequences of this viewpoint. As examples, we give results concerning the reciprocals of Ramanujan’s theta functions and of the false theta functions of L. J. Rogers, and raise an array of questions related to these. Part of this study may be considered a natural dual of the truncated pentagonal number theorem of Andrews and Merca.
A Combinatorial Proof Of A Partition Perimeter Inequality, Hunter Waldron
A Combinatorial Proof Of A Partition Perimeter Inequality, Hunter Waldron
Michigan Tech Publications
The partition perimeter is a statistic defined to be one less than the sum of the number of parts and the largest part. Recently, Amdeberhan, Andrews, and Ballantine proved the following analog of Glaisher’s theorem: for all m ≥ 2 and n ≥ 1, there are at least as many partitions with perimeter n and parts repeating fewer than m times as there are partitions with perimeter n with parts not divisible by m. In this work, we provide a combinatorial proof of their theorem by relating the combinatorics of the partition perimeter to that of compositions. Using this technique, …

The serotonin 2C receptor (5-HT2CR)-melanocortin pathway plays well-established roles in the regulation of feeding behavior and body weight homeostasis. Dysfunctions in this system, such as loss-of-function mutations in the Htr2c gene, can lead to hyperphagia and obesity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential therapeutic strategies for ameliorating hyperphagia, hyperglycemia, and obesity associated with a loss-of-function mutation in the Htr2c gene (Htr2cF327L/Y). We demonstrated that reexpressing functional 5-HT2CR solely in hypothalamic pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons is sufficient to reduce food intake and body weight in Htr2cF327L/Y mice subjected to a high-fat diet (HFD). In addition, 5-HT2CR expression restores the …

Many coastal and rural areas in Britain are deprived. This regional aspect multiplies the effect of digital exclusion for older people. Younger people in these regions can also be digitally excluded. Codesigning digital technologies, using the natural and heritage resources of such regions would address this, but is rarely done. We present our methods and preliminary results, half-way through a 30-month project to develop novel technologies in extended reality, underwater telepresence, digital social games, and artificial intelligence voice interfaces and to use these assets to tackle digital exclusion. We are taking an intergenerational approach, working with 35 partner organizations, some …

Glioblastoma Disrupts Cortical Network Activity At Multiple Spatial And Temporal Scales, Jochen Meyer, Kwanha Yu, Estefania Luna-Figueroa, Benjamin Deneen, Jeffrey Noebels
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The emergence of glioblastoma in cortical tissue initiates early and persistent neural hyperexcitability with signs ranging from mild cognitive impairment to convulsive seizures. The influence of peritumoral synaptic density, expansion dynamics, and spatial contours of excess glutamate upon higher order neuronal network modularity is unknown. We combined cellular and widefield imaging of calcium and glutamate fluorescent reporters in two glioblastoma mouse models with distinct synaptic microenvironments and infiltration profiles. Functional metrics of neural ensembles are dysregulated during tumor invasion depending on the stage of malignant progression and tumor cell proximity. Neural activity is differentially modulated during periods of accelerated and …

Bagging Improves The Performance Of Deep Learning-Based Semantic Segmentation With Limited Labeled Images: A Case Study Of Crop Segmentation For High-Throughput Plant Phenotyping, Yinglun Zhan, Yuzhen Zhou, Geng Bai, Yufeng Ge
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
Advancements in imaging, computer vision, and automation have revolutionized various fields, including field-based high-throughput plant phenotyping (FHTPP). This integration allows for the rapid and accurate measurement of plant traits. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) have emerged as a powerful tool in FHTPP, particularly in crop segmentation—identifying crops from the background—crucial for trait analysis. However, the effectiveness of DCNNs often hinges on the availability of large, labeled datasets, which poses a challenge due to the high cost of labeling. In this study, a deep learning with bagging approach is introduced to enhance crop segmentation using high-resolution RGB images, tested on the …

Mexican-American Literature Is American Literature, Davia Ellen Guzman
Mexican-American Literature Is American Literature, Davia Ellen Guzman
Senior Theses
The main focus of this article is to show that teaching Mexican-American literature is an important part of teaching American literature, one that is often neglected. As of right now, Chicano Literature and American Literature are seen as two separate categories even though they are one in the same. Authors such as Rudolfo Anaya and Tomás Rivera allow readers insight into Mexican-American culture; the foundations they have set should be used in American Literature courses to help students view the wide variety that is American Literature, other than what the canon deems acceptable. Bless Me, Ultima, and …and the Earth …

Women fight injustices and underrepresentation all over the world, however, the women’s right movement does not look the same all over the world. Every country and every woman is fighting for different rights that they need, but not all women share the same experiences when it comes to the women’s rights movement. There are many intersections that determine the experiences of every individual woman. One of the intersections this paper will examine is the lived experience of women and Islam and the intersections between identity and gender in the Arab world. It’s important to note that in this paper, although …

Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines: Anesthesia For Total Knee And Hip Arthroplasty, Amanda Kleinfelder
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
Total knee and hip arthroplasty are the two most common orthopedic surgeries in the United States. Traditional perioperative practice is multidisciplinary, with each professional, including anesthesia, making decisions based on their current knowledge or past experience. Postoperative complications pose a threat to any patient undergoing a surgical procedure. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols were developed to streamline best practice guidelines during the perioperative period. ERAS pathways aim to decrease postoperative complications, accelerate recovery after surgery, decrease narcotic use and promote early mobilization and discharge from the hospital. The aim of this project is the development of evidence-based practice …
Carbon Sequestration In Peatlands: Using Environmental Proxies To Understand The Impact Of A Changing Climate On Global Carbon Storage, Sarah Schuller, Don Sullivan
Carbon Sequestration In Peatlands: Using Environmental Proxies To Understand The Impact Of A Changing Climate On Global Carbon Storage, Sarah Schuller, Don Sullivan
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
Peatlands are a type of terrestrial wetland ecosystem in which consistently waterlogged conditions prevent the decomposition of organic matter. These conditions allow for sequestered carbon in plant matter to remain stored in the soil to such a great degree that peatlands store more carbon than all other vegetation types in the world combined. By inhibiting decomposition, the composition of water-rich peat soil remains representative of the environmental conditions during the period in which the peat was formed. The collected peat samples can then be utilized as environmental proxies to determine historical temperature, moisture, and carbon content and extrapolated to predict …

Time-based media (TBM) is a category of art in which the works rely on the passage of time and often the integration of technology to convey their artistic concepts and narratives. It encompasses various artistic expressions, including video installations, sound art, performance, and interactive digital works. This diverse array of mediums present distinct challenges to institutions responsible for their storage, preservation, and accessibility. The rapid evolution of technology and the inherent fragility of the media formats make the proper management of time-based media art equipment a critical concern. This paper examines three case studies of time-based media artworks from the …

Utilizing Existing Postfeminist Framework To Explore A Sexualized Media Test Case: “Man Needs A Woman” By Maty Noyes, Nicole Doris
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
Postfeminism is simply referred to as the most recent wave of feminism, but feminist scholars have failed to reach a standardized definition that recognizes the nuances of sexuality, media, and culture present within the field. This paper utilizes the postfeminist framework of two prominent feminist scholars: Rosalind Gill and Feona Attwood. Specifically, this paper draws from Gill’s interpretation of postfeminism and Attwood’s interpretation of the sexualization of culture and the overlap between the two theories. Rather than attempt to offer a concrete definition in such a rapidly evolving field, this paper offers a music video from a lesser-known pop artist, …

Accurate measurement of the mechanical properties of cardiac and arterial tissues is indispensable for advancing computer simulations and developing medical devices. This study aimed to assess the passive mechanical properties of cardiac and arterial tissue in a calf model using a paired comparison method.
Methods: A planar biaxial stretching device was used to determine the mechanical characteristics of 84 square specimens obtained from 14 different anatomical regions. Cauchy stress-Green strain curves were constructed for each anatomical area, and a Fung-type constitutive …
