The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler May 2024

The Nuanced Relationship Between Mindfulness, Racial Prejudice, And Policy Support, Jared Michael Cutler

Dissertations and Theses

Researchers have investigated the relationship between mindfulness and prejudice, although the findings have been somewhat inconsistent. Two broad factors may be responsible for these mixed findings: different conceptualizations of mindfulness across studies, and ideological differences among participants. Attention monitoring and acceptance, together, are proposed to be responsible for the psychological benefits of mindfulness, including reduced emotion rumination. Attention alone, however, strengthens rumination, which predicts prejudice. Additionally, prejudice hinders the endorsement of equitable policy. As such, mindfulness measures and interventions that capture attention alone, then, may be positively related to prejudice and negatively associated with support for equitable policy, whereas mindfulness …

Size-Constrained Weighted Ancestors With Applications, Philip Bille, Yakov Nekrich, Solon P. Pissis May 2024

Size-Constrained Weighted Ancestors With Applications, Philip Bille, Yakov Nekrich, Solon P. Pissis

Michigan Tech Publications

The weighted ancestor problem on a rooted node-weighted tree T is a generalization of the classic predecessor problem: construct a data structure for a set of integers that supports fast predecessor queries. Both problems are known to require Ω(log log n) time for queries provided O(n poly log n) space is available, where n is the input size. The weighted ancestor problem has attracted a lot of attention by the combinatorial pattern matching community due to its direct application to suffix trees. In this formulation of the problem, the nodes are weighted by string depth. This research has culminated in …

Tumors typically lack canonical danger signals required to activate adaptive immunity and also frequently employ substantial immunomodulatory mechanisms that downregulate adaptive responses and contribute to escape from immune surveillance. Given the variety of mechanisms involved in shielding tumors from immune recognition, it is not surprising that single-agent immunomodulatory approaches have been largely unsuccessful in generating durable antitumor responses. Here we report a unique combination of immunomodulatory and cytostatic agents that recondition the tumor microenvironment and eliminate complex and/or poor-prognosis tumor types including the non-immunogenic 4T-1 model of TNBC, the aggressive MOC-2 model of HNSCC, and the high-risk MYCN-amplified model of …

Comparison Of Methods For Creating Populations Of Models By Solving Stochastic Inverse Problems, Elizabeth Epstein May 2024

Comparison Of Methods For Creating Populations Of Models By Solving Stochastic Inverse Problems, Elizabeth Epstein

Theses

Given a parametric family of models and observational data, a researcher may be faced with an inverse problem: what distribution of parameters best creates a set of models that produce the observed data? Traditionally, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) has commonly been used as a method to solve these stochastic inverse problems. In recent years, however, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been employed. The effectiveness of Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods as compared to a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) when applied to a family of models produced by a system of ordinary differential equations that model viral load over …

Marking Estimation In Petri Nets Using Dynamic Mode Decomposition, Aditya Kale

Theses

Petri Nets (PNs) are a well-established framework for modeling and analyzing complex systems with interacting, concurrent processes. This thesis extends traditional Petri Net methodologies by integrating Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), a technique originally developed for fluid dynamics, to analyze Continuous Petri Nets (CPNs). By applying DMD to CPN marking evolution, this research constructs a reduced-order model that captures its dynamics through dynamic modes and eigenvalues, enabling prediction of future markings without detailed knowledge of transition firings or underlying deterministic models. The principal contribution of this research is extending the kit of tools available for analysis of CPN dynamics, providing insights …

Esophageal carcinoma is the sixth-leading cause of cancer death worldwide. A precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is Barrett's Esophagus (BE). Early-stage diagnosis and treatment of esophageal neoplasia (Barrett's with high-grade dysplasia/intramucosal cancer) increase the five-year survival rate from 10% to 98%. BE is a global challenge; however, current endoscopes for early BE detection are costly and require extensive infrastructure for patient examination and sedation. We describe the design and evaluation of the first prototype of ScanCap, a high-resolution optical endoscopy system with a reusable, low-cost tethered capsule, designed to provide high-definition, blue-green illumination imaging for the early detection of BE …

While our understanding of the nanoscale architecture of anterograde synaptic transmission is rapidly expanding, the qualitative and quantitative molecular principles underlying distinct mechanisms of retrograde synaptic communication remain elusive. We show that a particular form of tonic cannabinoid signaling is essential for setting target cell–dependent synaptic variability. It does not require the activity of the two major endocannabinoid-producing enzymes. Instead, by developing a workflow for physiological, anatomical, and molecular measurements at the same unitary synapse, we demonstrate that the nanoscale stoichiometric ratio of type 1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1Rs) to the release machinery is sufficient to predict synapse-specific release probability. Accordingly, …

Application Of Secant Span In Medical Diagnosis, R. Narmadhagnanam, A. Edward Samuel May 2024

Application Of Secant Span In Medical Diagnosis, R. Narmadhagnanam, A. Edward Samuel

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Many common and specific characteristics engrave most diseases. Water-borne diseases differ slightly in their characteristics. Erroneous diagnoses can be attributed to shared characteristics. Current approaches tend to rely on imprecise diagnoses and lack robust techniques for differentiating between characteristics. Every illness also presents with specific symptoms. To assist doctors in approaching a likely diagnosis, the suggested method is successful in determining the connection between a class of sickness and the people with a specific pathology to the indications. Among n-valued interval neutrosophic sets, a secant span is proposed in this paper and a few of its attributes are talked about …

Listening To Young Children With Disabilities: Experiences Of Quality In Mainstream Primary Education, Katherine Gulliver May 2024

Listening To Young Children With Disabilities: Experiences Of Quality In Mainstream Primary Education, Katherine Gulliver

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

All children should have access to quality education through a child-centred pedagogy. An inclusive, child-centred pedagogy uses a strength-based view of children that recognises each child as unique and competent, providing children with multiple opportunities to explore and learn at their own pace. However, competing tensions in mainstream primary education in England can impact this through a performative school culture that focusses on progress and attainment rather than the successful inclusion of all children including those with disabilities. This adult-centric view of education quality does not consider children's experiences of what happens in mainstream primary education, through their perspectives. The …
