Boom, Shake The Room: Seismic Surveys Affect Behaviour And Survival Of Western Rock Lobster, Simon De Lestang, Jason How, Kelvin Rushworth, Christine Erbe
Fisheries Research Articles
Seismic studies are conducted to investigate subterranean structures for, among other things, indications of petroleum and mineral deposits. Within the marine environment, these studies use sub-surface airguns to create powerful sound waves that penetrate the substrate, with their variable reflection time and strength being used to model seabed densities, structure, and composition. There is a growing body of work examining the effects of seismic surveys on marine fauna, primarily marine mammals and to a lesser extent fishes and invertebrates. Recently published studies on the southern rock lobster have shown these intense sound waves can affect lobster physiology and short-term behaviour. …

Donald Trump. Guilty. Hunter Biden. Underway. This summer, we can’t avoid high-profile criminal prosecutions, nor talking heads telling us every which way to think about them. Among that cacophony, it is hard to be heard, or even to hear oneself think. So I write to a particular group of Americans, those whose reaction is this: “Enough.” ...

Aim: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. However, while 150+ animal models of AD exist, drug translation from preclinical models to humans for treatment usually fails. One factor contributing to low translation is likely the absence of neurodegenerative models that also encompass the multi-morbidities of human aging. We previously demonstrated that, in comparison to the PigmEnTed (PET) guinea pig strain which models “typical” brain aging, the Hartley strain develops hallmarks of AD like aging humans. Hartleys also exhibit age-related impairments in cartilage and skeletal muscle. Impaired mitochondrial respiration is one driver of both cellular aging and …

The appellate court affirmed DHCR's denial of petitioner's rent overcharge complaint, finding DHCR's determination that the apartment was deregulated before petitioner's tenancy to be rational and not arbitrary. The decision upheld DHCR's consideration of the registration history and improvements made to the unit, supporting the conclusion that the rent exceeded deregulation thresholds due to lawful individual apartment improvements (IAIs). The court rejected petitioner's arguments challenging the sufficiency of evidence and DHCR's application of its policies, emphasizing DHCR's discretion in evaluating deregulation claims and its adherence to statutory and regulatory requirements governing rent stabilization.

In a dispute over tax exemptions under Section 421-a of the Real Property Tax Law, petitioners argued that the replacement ratio requirement for affordable housing units under Option D unfairly hindered their condo projects in Brooklyn. The court upheld the agency's application of the statutory replacement ratio, rejecting petitioners' claim that Option D should be exempt. The decision underscored deference to agency interpretations and the statutory framework's explicit requirements, despite petitioners' objections on policy grounds.
The Aquatic Microbial Environment Shapes The Gut Microbiota, Brain, And Behavior Of Larval Amphibians, Kyle Emerson
The Aquatic Microbial Environment Shapes The Gut Microbiota, Brain, And Behavior Of Larval Amphibians, Kyle Emerson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbial communities comprising bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protists live within and on the surfaces of animal hosts. These microbial communities exist in symbiosis with the host, and heavily influence host physiology, development, health, and fitness. Gut-dwelling microbes (i.e., gut microbiota) contribute to host neurodevelopment through a bidirectional Microbiota-Gut-Brain (MGB) axis. Evidence of the MGB axis has been primarily derived from studies that use germ-free (GF) models, which commonly display altered neurophysiology and behavior compared to conventionally raised counterparts. Almost all studies of the MGB axis have used mammalian models in a biomedical framework, leaving a knowledge gap regarding the role …

In machine learning, hyperparameter optimization (HPO) is essential for effective model training and significantly impacts model performance. Hyperparameters are predefined model settings which fine-tune the model’s behavior and are critical to modeling complex data patterns. Traditional HPO approaches such as Grid Search, Random Search, and Bayesian Optimization have been widely used in this field. However, as datasets grow and models increase in complexity, these approaches often require a significant amount of time and resources for HPO. This research introduces a novel approach using 𝑡-way testing—a combinatorial approach to software testing used for identifying faults with a test set that covers …

Effective teamwork is crucial for organizational success, yet few studies have quantified the influence and combination embedded within the collaboration process. This study aims to extend the representation learning model to quantify the effectiveness of teamwork collaborations and identify the most influential group in every individual’s combination. We leverage the unique NBA 2K dataset, containing individual skillset attributes and labeled player levels, to mark the hierarchy value based on skill sets. By transforming the hierarchical structure of teams into vector representations, we provide a comprehensive understanding of the influence and combination within teamwork collaborations. Our findings contribute to the literature …

HANDWRITTEN OPINION. Landlord petitioner moved to restore case to court calendar. Tenant respondent opposed stating too much time (3 years) has passed and moves for dismissal under CPLR (A)(3). Court found petitioner did not "satisfactorily explaining the reasons for the" long delay, and denied motion to restore (sequence 3) without prejudice. "Motion sequence 4 (the holdover) remains held in abeyance without restoration, so the issue is not reached."

The rent stabilized tenant of record ("landlord" for the purposes of record structure on this project website) initiated a holdover proceeding against their subtenants, seeking to recover possession of the subject premises. The subtenants interposed an answer with affirmative defenses and counterclaims. The court denied the subtenants' motion for discovery and denied the landlord's motion for summary judgment. The court found that the subtenants failed to plead a valid illusory tenancy affirmative defense and that there were disputed issues of fact requiring trial regarding whether a month-to-month tenancy was created after expiration of the sublease agreement. The court also noted …

Recent single-cell RNA sequencing studies have revealed distinct microglial states in development and disease. These include proliferative region-associated microglia (PAM) in developing white matter and disease-associated microglia (DAM) prevalent in various neurodegenerative conditions. PAM and DAM share a similar core gene signature. However, the extent of the dynamism and plasticity of these microglial states, as well as their functional significance, remains elusive, partly due to the lack of specific tools. Here, we generated an inducible Cre driver line, Clec7a-CreERT2, that targets PAM and DAM in the brain parenchyma. Utilizing this tool, we profiled labeled cells during development and in several …

Enhancing Stakeholder Engagement In Project Management Through Ai-Driven Predictive Modeling, Raza Hasan
Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses
The ongoing difficulty in project management in achieving desired outcomes is frequently linked to the "value gap" that appears between program installation and execution, where stakeholders find it difficult to adjust actions to achieve desired outcomes. Adaptable tactics are required to overcome the challenges posed by a various of interests, decision-making procedures, and resource limitations in traditional stakeholder engagement approaches. This study aims to know the key factors that influence the acceptance of AI-driven forecasting in project management processes for stakeholder management, and how these characteristics help to overcome the drawbacks of conventional stakeholder engagement approaches. The paper investigates the …

Uveal melanoma (UM) is the deadliest form of eye cancer in adults. Inactivating mutations and/or loss of expression of the gene encoding BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1) in UM tumors are associated with an increased risk of metastasis. To investigate the mechanisms underlying this risk, we explored the functional consequences of BAP1 deficiency. UM cell lines expressing mutant BAP1 grew more slowly than those expressing wild-type BAP1 in culture and in vivo. The ability of BAP1 reconstitution to restore cell proliferation in BAP1-deficient cells required its deubiquitylase activity. Proteomic analysis showed that BAP1-deficient cells had decreased phosphorylation of ribosomal S6 and …

Therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MNs) arise after exposure to cytotoxic therapies and are associated with high-risk genetic features and poor outcomes. We analyzed a cohort of patients with therapy-related chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (tCMML; n = 71) and compared its features to that of de novo CMML (dnCMML; n = 461). Median time from cytotoxic therapy to tCMML diagnosis was 6.5 years. Compared with dnCMML, chromosome-7 abnormalities (4% vs 13%; P = .005) but not complex karyotype (3% vs 7%; P = .15), were more frequent in tCMML. tCMML was characterized by higher TP53 mutation frequency (4% vs 12%; P = .04) …

Background: TMPRSS2, a key molecule for SARS-CoV-2 invading human host cells, has an association with cancer. However, its association with lung cancer remains insufficiently unexplored.
Methods: In five bulk transcriptomics datasets, one single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) dataset and one proteomics dataset for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), we explored associations between TMPRSS2 expression and immune signatures, tumor progression phenotypes, genomic features, and clinical prognosis in LUAD by the bioinformatics approach. Furthermore, we performed experimental validation of the bioinformatics findings.
Results: TMPRSS2 expression levels correlated negatively with the enrichment levels of both immune-stimulatory and immune-inhibitory signatures, while they correlated positively with the ratios …
An Evaluation Of The Irish Rugby Football Union (Irfu) Coach Education Framework In School And Club Settings, Kevin Smith
An Evaluation Of The Irish Rugby Football Union (Irfu) Coach Education Framework In School And Club Settings, Kevin Smith
Theses
This thesis aimed to evaluate the Irish Rugby Football Union Coach Education Framework (IRFU-CEF) and its subsequent effect on coach behaviours/perceptions, training session content, and athlete perceptions in multiple rugby union settings. The IRFU-CEF was designed to educate coaches in How to coach, as opposed to more traditional forms of coach education that are typically designed to deliver content of What to coach. A baseline analysis (Study 1) was conducted to examine current behaviours/perceptions in a rugby union coaching environment. An IRFU-CEF intervention (Study 2) was delivered to coaches in the form of a single episode as a coach education …

Humour and antisocial behaviour on the internet are under-researched. Online spaces have opened a gateway for new ways to express unrestrained humour (e.g., dark humour) and ways to behave antisocially (e.g., online trolling). The tendencies and motivations of those engaging with such humour and behaviour are yet to be clearly established and understood. The present study aimed to fill this gap by exploring the interplay between dark humour, online trolling, and dark personality traits. Participants (N = 160) completed an online survey consisting of trait scales to assess the Dark Tetrad, dark humour, and online trolling, as well as two …

Investigating how infants first establish relationships between words is a necessary step towards understanding how an interconnected network of semantic relationships develops in the adult lexical-semantic system. Stimuli selection for these child studies is critical since words must be both familiar and highly imageable. However, there has been a reliance on adult word association norms to inform stimuli selection in English infant studies to date, as no resource currently exists for child-specific word associations. We present three experiments that explore the strength of word–word relationships in 3-year-olds. Experiment 1 collected children’s word associations (WA) (N = 150; female = 84, …
Predicting Ph At In-Situ Temperature For Aquatic Environments, Sarah E. Bartoloni
Predicting Ph At In-Situ Temperature For Aquatic Environments, Sarah E. Bartoloni
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
pH is typically measured at a constant temperature and, as needed, converted to in-situ temperature using a system of thermodynamic equations. Using this equilibrium approach, adjustment of pH to in situ conditions requires two measured CO2 system parameters (pH, total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, or CO2 fugacity). Currently, when pH is the only measured CO2 system parameter, linear models are used to adjust the pH to in-situ temperature. Although many studies have attempted to optimize CO2 equilibrium constants (K1 and K2) for the CO2 system over a range of conditions, very little prior work has experimentally examined which CO2 system …

Essays On Machine Learning And Corporate Disclosure, Zicheng (Leo) Xiao
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation contains two essays that shed new light on the dynamic of information disclosure on the capital market. For both two essays I leverage computational linguistics and 20 million turns of dialogues from earnings conference calls from 2006-2022. In the first essay, I introduce a novel measure that quantifies the disparity in narrative focus between managers’ disclosures and analysts’ questions during these calls, denoted as Topic Attention Divergence (TAD). A higher level of TAD indicates a higher level of firm-investor asymmetry and lower information quality. My results confirm that higher TAD in earnings conference calls inversely (positively) predict firms’ …
Manipulating Colloidal Particles Using Chemical Gradients And Top-Down Control, Mark Nichols Mcdonald
Manipulating Colloidal Particles Using Chemical Gradients And Top-Down Control, Mark Nichols Mcdonald
Theses and Dissertations
Colloidal particles provide the ideal building blocks for the next generation of microdevices, such as advanced sensors and precision drug delivery systems. However, many such applications require the use of top-down (i.e. humanly controllable) forces to manipulate colloidal particles with single-particle precision, and current methods can only achieve such precision for small numbers of particles at a time. To address this challenge, we propose using chemical forces in combination with existing top-down techniques to enable the control of larger numbers of particles simultaneously. Controlling colloids using chemical reactions is a novel technique not typically utilized. Due to its distinct difference …

Hemojuvelin (HJV) is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored protein of the repulsive guidance molecule family acting as a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) coreceptor to induce the hepatic iron regulatory protein hepcidin. Hepcidin causes ubiquitination and degradation of the sole known iron exporter ferroportin, thereby limiting iron availability. The detailed signaling mechanism of HJV in vivo has yet to be investigated. In the current manuscript, we used an established model of adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated liver-specific overexpression of HJV in murine models of hepatocyte-specific deficiency of the BMP type I receptors Alk2 or Alk3. In control mice, HJV overexpression increased hepatic Hamp messenger RNA (mRNA) …

The Right To Resistance And The Western Sahara: A Twail Analysis Of The International Legal Order And Its Constraints On Decolonization, Christina Wrapp
Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law
"The Western Sahara is often called the "Last Colony in the World," in reference to its anachronistic status as a territory deemed to have self-determination by the United Nations and ICJ, but still under the rule of another country. Scholarship on the Western Sahara tends to concentrate on the protracted stalemate in their war of independence against Morocco, highlighting the roles of several individual actors, such as France, the United States, the United Nations, and the Polisario, and how these actors create a particular structure to the conflict. This Note focuses on the role of the International Legal Order, as …
