Iii-Nitride Nanowire Deep-Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diodes, Bryan Melanson Jun 2024

Iii-Nitride Nanowire Deep-Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diodes, Bryan Melanson

Theses

Deep-Ultraviolet (DUV) Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) emitting invisible light at wavelengths below 280 nm, have seen increased research interest over the last decade. Of their many potential applications, pathogen neutralization is perhaps the most presently relevant in the post-COVID era. While the high energy light of DUV LEDs has been found particularly effective at destroying viruses and bacteria without the need for application of chemical agents, the poor efficiencies of DUV LEDs currently prevent their widespread adoption in these applications. While a number of factors contribute to the poor efficiency of DUV LEDs, light extraction is perhaps the most significant …

Elizabeth Street Garden, Inc. V. City Of New York Jun 2024

Elizabeth Street Garden, Inc. V. City Of New York

All Decisions

In a SEQRA challenge regarding proposed senior housing development on city-owned land in Manhattan, the court affirmed HPD's negative declaration. The case hinged on whether HPD adequately considered environmental impacts under SEQRA. The court held HPD's assessment met legal standards by identifying relevant environmental concerns and taking a reasoned approach, including mitigating open space deficiencies. The decision reinforced that judicial review of agency actions under SEQRA is limited to procedural adherence and rationality, emphasizing agencies' discretion in environmental assessments. The ruling clarified that SEQRA does not require agencies to address every potential environmental impact comprehensively.

Impacts Of Stream Habitat Restoration On Macroinvertebrate Assemblages: A Systematic Literature Review, Morgan E. Seitzer

University Honors Theses

Globally, river restoration has become a popular tool for improving the health of a watershed and restoring ecosystem services, but still has significant knowledge gaps. In certain areas and scientific communities, special attention has been given to the response of macroinvertebrates as a measure of restoration success. This systematic literature review aims to highlight and discuss the patterns in studies that have comparable before-and-after restoration data on macroinvertebrates after reconnecting stream channels to their floodplains. Macroinvertebrate sampling is a simple if not time-consuming task that can reveal important data about habitat quality. Because they serve as an important food source …

Mantis Search Algorithm Integrated With Opposition-Based Learning And Simulated Annealing For Feature Selection, Samia Mandour, Abduallah Gamal, Ahmed Sleem Jun 2024

Mantis Search Algorithm Integrated With Opposition-Based Learning And Simulated Annealing For Feature Selection, Samia Mandour, Abduallah Gamal, Ahmed Sleem

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

Feature selection (FS) plays a vital role in minimizing the high-dimensional data as much as possible to aid in enhancing the classification accuracy and reducing computational costs. The purpose of the FS techniques is to extract the most effective subset features, which might enable the machine learning (ML) algorithms to better grasp the input data’s patterns and improve their classification performance. Although several metaheuristic algorithms have been recently presented to solve this problem, they still suffer from several disadvantages, such as getting stuck in local optima, slow convergence speed, and a lack of population diversity, which prevent them from achieving …

Unveiling Ferroelectric And Multifunctional Insights In Hybrid Formate Perovskites, Abduljelili Popoola Jun 2024

Unveiling Ferroelectric And Multifunctional Insights In Hybrid Formate Perovskites, Abduljelili Popoola

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Formate perovskites, denoted as AB(HCOO)3, represent a diverse group of hybrid organic-inorganic compounds, renowned for their numerous phase transitions and a wide array of properties. These properties encompass (anti)ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity, (anti)ferromagnetism, and multiferroism. Despite extensive research on these materials, a comprehensive examination of their properties across a substantial number of formate perovskites remains scarce. This scarcity stems from structural complexity of these materials, potential systematic errors arising from different measurement techniques or incomplete data. For instance, data for critical parameters like piezoelectricity, dielectricity, and elasticity tensors have been lacking.

In this study, we address these challenges by employing first-principles density …

Photopolymer Material Durability And Safety In Holographic Diffusers For Visual Applications, Matthew Hellis, Alan Casey, Edoardo Splendi, Suzanne Martin, Matthew Sheehan, Kevin Murphy Jun 2024

Photopolymer Material Durability And Safety In Holographic Diffusers For Visual Applications, Matthew Hellis, Alan Casey, Edoardo Splendi, Suzanne Martin, Matthew Sheehan, Kevin Murphy

Articles

This study introduces novel holographic diffuser applications employing acrylamide- or diacetone acrylamide-based photopolymers, patterned within the volume on a micron scale by a single-beam holographic recording process. These diffusers have previously been presented as potential treatments for amblyopia and diplopia. This work has now been extended to spectrometric analysis to determine their properties under broadband light. Diffusive elements with higher diffusion efficiencies exhibited a marginal reduction (< 5%) in diffusion efficiency across most of the visible spectrum. Given the intended application of these holographic diffusers, cytotoxicity assessments were also performed. This is significant as there is a difference in toxicity between the crystalline acrylamide (classified as a category 3 material) and diacetone acrylamide (classified as a category 4 material). The findings indicated substantially lower toxicity in holograms produced with diacetone acrylamide-based photopolymer. The accelerated ageing of both formulations of holographic diffusers indicated that the acrylamide-based holographic diffusers did not reduce efficacy in the 292 days of ageing. The diacetone acrylamide-based holographic diffusers exhibited reduced efficacy by day 182. Despite this, both formulations have been shown to perform for prolonged periods as the treatment modality would require. These results emphasise that holographic diffusers exhibit minimal spectral impact, and longevity on the scale of treatment regimes which are crucial considerations for their prospective use case as treatments for amblyopia and diplopia.

A co-located High-Speed Imaging (HSI) sensor is used to measure the Drop Size Distributions (DSD) in the spray chamber. The radar sampling beam is well aligned with the HSI probes, allowing an objective comparison between the remote sensing and in situ observations. In this study, the observed radar power …

Neurogranin Modulates The Rate Of Association Between Calmodulin And Target Peptides, John A Putkey, Laurel Hoffman, Vladimir Berka, Xu Wang Jun 2024

Neurogranin Modulates The Rate Of Association Between Calmodulin And Target Peptides, John A Putkey, Laurel Hoffman, Vladimir Berka, Xu Wang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The best-known mode of action of calmodulin (CaM) is binding of Ca2+ to its N- and C-domains, followed by binding to target proteins. An underappreciated facet of this process is that CaM is typically bound to proteins at basal levels of free Ca2+, including the small, intrinsically disordered, neuronal IQ-motif proteins called PEP-19 and neurogranin (Ng). PEP-19 and Ng would not be effective competitive inhibitors of high-affinity Ca2+-dependent CaM targets at equilibrium because they bind to CaM with relatively low affinity, but they could influence the time course of CaM signaling by affecting the rate of association of CaM with …

The DNA damage response is critical for maintaining genome integrity and is commonly disrupted in the development of cancer. PPM1D (protein phosphatase Mg2+/Mn2+-dependent 1D) is a master negative regulator of the response; gain-of-function mutations and amplifications of PPM1D are found across several human cancers making it a relevant pharmacological target. Here, we used CRISPR/Cas9 screening to identify synthetic-lethal dependencies of PPM1D, uncovering superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) as a potential target for PPM1D-mutant cells. We revealed a dysregulated redox landscape characterized by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species and a compromised response to oxidative stress in PPM1D-mutant cells. Altogether, our …

Background Wheat grain development in the first few days after pollination determines the number of endosperm cells that influence grain yield potential and is susceptible to various environmental conditions, including high night temperatures (HNTs). Flag leaves and seed-associated bracts (glumes, awn, palea, and lemma) provide nutrients to the developing seed. However, the specific metabolic roles of these tissues are uncertain, especially their dynamics at different developmental stages and the time in a day. Tissue- and time-dependent metabolite profiling may hint at the metabolic roles of tissues and the mechanisms of how HNTs affect daytime metabolic status in early grain development. …
