Assessing Roman Catholics’ Modern Beliefs And Behaviors Surrounding Genetics Counseling Services, Mary S. Shinaberry Jun 2024

Assessing Roman Catholics’ Modern Beliefs And Behaviors Surrounding Genetics Counseling Services, Mary S. Shinaberry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Currently, there is limited knowledge about the contemporary beliefs of Roman Catholics regarding genetic healthcare, and concerns exist that they may be less comfortable accessing genetic counseling services. To better meet the needs of this population, we interviewed 18 adult Roman Catholics living in the United States. A novel method of thematic analysis was utilized, combining traditional qualitative techniques with the assistance of ChatGPT-4, following best practices proposed to improve the trustworthiness of AI-assisted qualitative analysis. The majority of participants were college-educated women aged 25-40, none of whom had seen a genetic counselor. Most participants associated the term “genetic counseling” …

Comparative Genomics Of Anax (Odonata: Aeshnidae), Ying Fei Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Insect migration is an important phenomenon characterized by the long-distance travel of various species in search of resources, safety, breeding, and/or suitable climates. However, relatively little is known about insect migration patterns and the genetic factors associated with them. Three closely related species of dragonflies (Odonata: Aeshnidae), Anax junius, A. strenuus, and A. walsinghami, form a clade of migratory and non-migratory species and present a natural laboratory to study the evolution of genes that may be related to muscle developments and insect migration. In this study, we sequence the whole genomes of these three Anax species to present a resource …

Flavin is a molecule composed of a tricyclic isoalloxazine ring linked to a ribityl. Flavins are utilized as a cofactor by many enzymes to facilitate a myriad of chemistries. Flavoproteins were first discovered in the late 1800 s and have since been an interest to researchers, largely due to the unique spectrophotometric characteristics that make it a valuable reporter molecule. Flavin cofactors (typically either flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) or flavin mononucleotide (FMN)) are chemically versatile as the isoalloxazine ring can form one and two-electron reduced states. The reduced states are prone to react with molecular oxygen and numerous observations have …

All Decisions

The landlord commenced a nonpayment proceeding against the tenant based on the tenant's alleged default on rent for an unregulated apartment. The tenant argued that the apartment was illegally deregulated and the landlord is charging an illegal rent. The court granted the tenant's motion to amend their answer to include a claim of fraudulent deregulation. The court also granted the tenant's motion for discovery to allow them to investigate their claims. The court found that the tenant had raised a colorable claim of fraudulent deregulation and that discovery was necessary to determine the apartment's regulatory status.

A Nordhaus-Gaddum Type Problem For The Normalized Laplacian Spectrum And Graph Cheeger Constant, Adam Widtsoe Knudson Jun 2024

A Nordhaus-Gaddum Type Problem For The Normalized Laplacian Spectrum And Graph Cheeger Constant, Adam Widtsoe Knudson

Theses and Dissertations

We will study various quantities related to connectivity of a graph. To this end, we look at Nordhaus-Gaddum type problems, which are problems where the same quantity is studied for a graph $G$ and its complement $G^c$ at the same time. For a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with normalized Laplacian eigenvalues $0 = \lambda_1(G) \leq \lambda_2(G) \leq \cdots \leq \lambda_n(G)$ and graph complement $G^c$, we prove that \begin{equation*} \max\{\lambda_2(G),\lambda_2(G^c)\}\geq \frac{2}{n^2}. \end{equation*} We do this by way of lower bounding $\max\{i(G), i(G^c)\}$ and $\max\{h(G), h(G^c)\}$ where $i(G)$ and $h(G)$ denote the isoperimetric number and Cheeger constant of $G$, respectively. We …

Exploring The Relationship Between Partner Boundary Flexibility Congruence And Well-Being Outcomes While Work From Home During Covid: The Mediation Of Dyadic Empathy, Huaying Li

Dissertations

This study integrates person-environment fit theory and boundary theory to examine the influence of congruence in work and family boundary management on the well-being of couples working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on the differences in work and family boundary management preferences between spouses, the study assesses the effects on dyadic empathy (empathic concern and perspective-taking), marital satisfaction, and job performance. Utilizing latent congruence modeling with survey data from 222 US employees, the study reveals that congruence (difference) in family flexibility between couples negatively impacts empathic concerns and perspective-taking. Conversely, actual transitions between work and family positively influence …

Factors Impacting The Empirical Identification Of The Bifactor Irt Model Of Rating Data, Wenya Chen Jun 2024

Factors Impacting The Empirical Identification Of The Bifactor Irt Model Of Rating Data, Wenya Chen

Dissertations

Response data corresponding to educational and psychological instruments may represent different dimensional structures to account for different patterns of the dependencies in the data. One of the dimensional structures that has been increasingly discussed in the literature is the bifactor structure. This structure can effectively separate different sources that influence the responses, which contributes to score validity and provides theoretical insights about the measured trait. Unfortunately, estimating this structure in practice comes with challenges. One such challenge is an empirical identification issue that is seldom discussed in the literature. This issue occurs when an item’s discriminations on the general and …

Savoring And Bereavement; Exploring Whether Savoring Can Be Used As An Interventional Tool For Grieving Older Adults, Ajla Basic Jun 2024

Savoring And Bereavement; Exploring Whether Savoring Can Be Used As An Interventional Tool For Grieving Older Adults, Ajla Basic

Dissertations

Relational savoring is the idea that savoring can be achieved through focusing on a critical relationship with another person and then extracting the positivity from that relationship (Borelli, et al., 2020). Relational savoring differs from regular savoring because in the former, it is the savoring of memories within a relationship that has attachment, and where the memories themselves have attachment-based content (i.e., protection, support, love) (Borelli, et al., 2020). This proposed study would seek to answer the question of whether relational savoring can act as a protective barrier against psychological distresses a bereaved person may experience by priming and enhancing …

Comparing The Genomes Of Multidrug And Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus Faecium From A Florida Wastewater Treatment Plant, Eleanor Brodrick Jun 2024

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) are a serious health threat, causing 50,000 infections and 5,000 deaths each year in the United States (CDC, 2019). Multidrug-resistant VRE are becoming more prevalent, and treatment options for infections caused by these organisms are limited (Arias et al., 2010; CDC, 2019). Multidrug resistant VRE have been previously isolated from wastewater in Brazil, Canada, and Portugal (Araújo et al., 2010; de_Farias et al., 2022; Sanderson et al., 2019). Thirteen vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolated from three stages of a Florida wastewater treatment plant were fully resistant to the following antibiotics: vancomycin, ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and nitrofurantoin, and …

Optimal Selection Of Good Polynomials And Constructions Of Locally Recoverable Codes Via Galois Theory, Austin Dukes Jun 2024

Optimal Selection Of Good Polynomials And Constructions Of Locally Recoverable Codes Via Galois Theory, Austin Dukes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To keep up with the ever-growing demand for reliable and efficient availability of data, locally recoverable codes (LRCs) have been the focus of much study due to their applications in cloud and distributed storage systems. A fundamental construction of LRCs was given in [36] based on polynomials which relied on the existence of r-good polynomials. In the same paper some constructions of good polynomials were given, but these constructions did not cover every configuration of parameters. Naturally this led to research into constructing good polynomials for what was not addressed in [36], but new ponderings were also posed, such as the …

Jinetes De La Tormenta: The Invasive Influence Of Gender Constructs On The Journey Towards Selfhood And Societal Progress, Marissa Nicole Luquette

Theses and Dissertations

The novel Jinetes de la tormenta, written by Spanish author, Javier Castañeda de la Torre, presents gender as an obstacle to individuals in the ongoing process of self-discovery (as it relates to personal identity) and as the underlying source of human discontent in the technological age. Jinetes represents gender as a hindrance to the developing self through masculine and feminine binaries in European colonial languages and through the performative behavioral expectations tethered to the gendered body the theoretical works of Jacques Lacan and Hélène Cixous. The theoretical works of Jacques Lacan and Hélène Cixous establish the argument surrounding linguistic gender …

Women Gaze Back: Affect And Apparatic Disintegration In Funeral Parade Of Roses And Perfect Blue, Jessi Ivie Jun 2024

Women Gaze Back: Affect And Apparatic Disintegration In Funeral Parade Of Roses And Perfect Blue, Jessi Ivie

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how films Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) by Toshio Matsumoto and Perfect Blue (1997) by Satoshi Kon subvert the male gaze of the camera by having the female main characters look back at the audience. The characters Mima (Perfect Blue) and Eddie (Funeral Parade) take control of the camera to subvert the hierarchical relationship between apparatus, audience, and characters. Through the lenses of apparatus and affect theory, these films show how the world of film includes the audience instead of precluding them. Experimental editing and heightened emotional situations unsettle the audience's voyeuristic position, bringing them closer to …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Decarbonization plans depend on the rapid, large-scale deployment of batteries to sufficiently decarbonize the electricity system and on-road transport. This can take many forms, shaped by technology, materials, and supply chain selection, which will have local and global environmental and social impacts. Current knowledge gaps limit the ability of decision-makers to make choices in facilitating battery deployment that minimizes or avoids unintended environmental and social consequences. These gaps include a lack of harmonized, accessible, and up-to-date data on manufacturing and supply chains and shortcomings within sustainability and social impact assessment methods, resulting in uncertainty that limits incorporation of research into …
