Effects Of Different Phosphate Fertilizers On Pasture Nutrition And Soil Phosphorus In Canterbury, New Zealand, L M. Condron, K M. Goh
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A field trial was conducted over 6 years to assess the relative performance of three phosphate (P) fertilisers of differing solubility (single superphosphate, ‘longlife’ superphosphate, ‘reactive’ phosphate rock) on a permanent pasture at Methven in Canterbury, New Zealand. Plant P uptake data showed that while the overall relative effectiveness of the fertilisers was closely related to their water-soluble P content (single superphosphate > ‘longlife’ superphosphate > ‘reactive’ phosphate rock), the agronomic efficiency of the sparingly soluble phosphate rock fertiliser improved markedly with time. Soil P analysis demonstrated that significant dissolution of phosphate rock had occurred in the soil, and the findings of …
Field Evaluation Of Soil Acidity Acidity Effects On The Growth Of Annual And Perennial Ryegrasses, N Miles
Field Evaluation Of Soil Acidity Acidity Effects On The Growth Of Annual And Perennial Ryegrasses, N Miles
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Soil acidity limits pasture establishment and productivity in the moister eastern half of South Africa. Sound lime requirement guidelines based on soil test data are required. In the study reported here, lime responses of annual (Lolium multiflorum) and perennial (Lolium perenne) ryegrasses were evaluated in irrigated field trials located on acidic, highly weathered soils. Annual ryegrass (yield response to lime 27 to 32%) was found to be markedly more tolerant of soil acidity than perennial ryegrass (yield response 68%). Acid saturations of up to 20% had little impact on the yield of annual ryegrass, while yield …

An Integrated Soil Testing-Modeling Approach To Improve Fertilizer Recommendations For Grassland, L Brown, D Scholefield, E C. Jewkes, N Preedy
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
New management strategies are required in order to reduce the appreciable emissions of N from intensively managed grassland. Previous work has shown that if fertiliser is applied at rates that take account of the mineral N found in soil at the time of each application, N use efficiency can be improved. A novel approach is described which integrates soil testing and modelling to produce N fertiliser recommendations on a monthly basis. An existing annual model of the N cycle in grassland has been modified to produce monthly predictions of mineral N in the soil. The model is being validated by …

Liming Of Acid Soils. I. Influence On Wheat Yield And Availability Of Soil Nutrients, C D. Tsadilas, V Samaras, J Varvarousis, N Maslaris
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
With a two year field experiment the influence of liming of strongly acid soils on wheat yield and on the availability of soil nutrients were studied. The results showed that liming increased soil pH and decreased exchangeable Al and available Fe and Zn. Wheat uptake of Mn was decreased, while P and Cu uptake were increased. Wheat biomass (hay plus seed) production and grain yield were also significantly increased.

Nitrogen Fertilization In Winter Forage Crops In The Southeast Of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), M A. Marino, A Mazzanti, H E. Echeverria, F Andrade
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The potential growth in the winter annual forage crops in the Southeast of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), is limited by the availability of nitrogen during the winter period. The effect of nitrogen fertilization on growth of the two main winter forage crops: oat (Avena sativa) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) was analyzed. Under winter-spring temperatures a higher growth potential was shown by annual ryegrass. The critical N doses were 150 and 100 kg.ha-1 of N for oat and annual ryegrass, respectively. The nitrogen dilution curves and the critical N concentration in the forage were determined. The …

Lucerne Decline: The Role Of Acidification, D J. Koopman, P G. Tow, T G. Reeves
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Paddock surveys and preliminary glasshouse experiments have identified acidification of the surface soil layers as a contributing factor to the problem of declining lucerne yields occurring in the mid north region of South Australia. In a field experiment, lime application at rates of 2 t/ha and 4 t/ha significantly improved the growth of lucerne in a soil with an acidic topsoil and alkaline subsoil. Lime incorporated into the soil had an initial short term advantage of improving lucerne production over lime applied to the soil surface. By the end of the first season there was no benefit of incorporated lime …

Evaluation Of Different Bradyrhizobium Sp Strains On Nitrogen Fixation Capacity In Four Forage Legumes, F O. Gallardo, E S. Lopes, M C. Diez
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Eleven available strains of Bradyrhizobium sp were used to test four forage legumes, Crotalaria juncea (Crotalaria), Cajanus cajans (Guandu), Styzolobium deeriagianum (Mucuna-Ana) and Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (Guar) for symbiotic N-fixation ability. Greenhouse experiments were conducted for nine weeks in order to evaluate shoot, root, and nodule dry weight, nodule number, and shoot nitrogen content. Four strains presented relative nitrogen efficiency (RNE) over 100% with Crotalaria cultivar, whereas only one strain was more efficient with Guandu and Mucuna cultivars. Strain 633 was the only one which presented a high yield with Crotalaria, Guandu and Mucuna-Ana cultivars.

Use Of Reactive Phosphate Rock For Pastures On The Southern Tablelands Of Nsw, Australia, D L. Garden, P R. Dann, I J. Mcgowen, C O'Malley
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A comparison was made of pasture production from phosphate fertilisers, including superphosphate, reactive phosphate rocks (RPRs) and a non-reactive phosphate rock at two sites on the Southern tablelands of NSW, Australia. Production from all phosphate rocks was low in the first year at both sites, but RPRs were similar to superphosphate by the fourth year. Production from RPRs was low in a dry year which is consistent with the requirement for moist acid soils for effective release of P from RPRs. Performance of RPRs was better at the site which was moister and had higher summer rainfall.
Increased Phosphorus Supply Enhances Water Uptake And Water Use Efficiency In White Clover Under Dry Conditions, D K. Singh, P.W. G. Sale
Increased Phosphorus Supply Enhances Water Uptake And Water Use Efficiency In White Clover Under Dry Conditions, D K. Singh, P.W. G. Sale
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
A glasshouse experiment was carried out to determine how increasing rates of P supply (0, 33, 100 and 300 kg P ha-1) influenced the water use efficiency of white clover grown in a P-deficient soil under dry conditions. Increasing the P supply enhanced both shoot dry matter yield and water use by the clover plants. The relatively greater dry matter response meant that water use efficiency also increased with added P. High rates of water extraction by these high-P clover plants resulted in a marked drying of soil. Despite these dry soil conditions there was no adverse effect on growth …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Soil microbial biomass nitrogen (BN ) was periodically measured in two pastures a) grazed pastures without N fertilizer and b) grazed pastures receiving 200 kg of fertilizer N per year, respectively, during July 1993 to July 1994. Soil type was a volcanic soil Medial, thermic, Typic Distrandept. BN was highly variable and the two type of pastures showed a similar pattern of distribution, with statistical differences in only three sampling. Values of BN were lower than that found in other studies of temperate regions, but also the BN was significantly higher than the available pool of mineral N, indicating the …

Benefits Of Applying Cow Slurry In Bands Beneath Grass Canopies, S Bittman, C G. Kowalenko, O Schmidt, D E. Hunt
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Efficient methods of application may enable dairy producers to use slurry manure as aoereplacement for inorganic nitrogen on grassland. This study compares the effect of slurry applied in bands beneath the grass canopy (drag-shoe) with a broadcast of slurry on top of the canopy (splash-plate), and with fertilizer nitrogen on yield of grass. Trials were conducted in spring, summer and fall of 1995 on established tall fescue in south-coastal B.C. Slurry manure was applied by drag-shoe or splash-plate at 50 and 100 kg ha-1 (nominally), at start of grass regrowth or 7-8 days later. A range of rates of NH4NO3 …

The Effect Of Fertiliser History On Nutrient Accumulation And Plant-Available Nutrient Supply In Legume-Based Pasture Soils, J L. Moir, M J. Hedley, A D. Mackay, R W. Tillman
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Animal production in New Zealand is dependent on pastoral legumes to build soil nitrogen fertility, which otherwise limits the growth of the major sward component, grass. Traditionally, in order to sustain legume vigour, single superphosphate has been applied to elevate soil phosphorus and sulphur levels. Rarely have either the agronomic or nutrient efficiencies of these systems been assessed. Fourteen hill country pasture sites in three broad rainfall regimes were chosen to assess the effect of contrasting fertiliser histories on soil fertility, in particular nitrogen availability. At each site soil fertility indices and pasture production for the 1993/94 growing season were …

Responses Of Red Clover To Inoculation With Endophytic Bacteria From Root Nodules, A V. Sturz, B R. Christie, B G. Matheson, J Nowak
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The aim of this study was to identify endophytic bacteria isolated from the nodules of healthy red clover plants (Trifolium pratense L.) and to assess their effects, alone and in combination with Rhizobium, on the growth and development of red clover seedlings. Clover root nodules were host to 12 bacteria species other than rhizobia. In root bacterization experiments, root nodule bacteria often promoted in vitro growth and nodulation of red clover when applied in combination with R. leguminosarum BV trifolii. Instances of growth depression were fewer in mixed than in individual bacterial applications. Single isolate applications of Rhizobium species to …
Heatsink For High-Power Dissipating Electrical Components With Exposed Die, Anonymous
Heatsink For High-Power Dissipating Electrical Components With Exposed Die, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure relates heatsinks, namely a heatsink for a very high-power dissipating electrical component with an exposed die from thermal and vibration/shock perspective. The present disclosure addresses two different but co-existing challenges for the high-power components (e.g., ~500W), namely 1) Vibrational/Shock safety of Exposed/Lidless die type chip, and 2) High heat dissipation. To address these challenges, 1) a non-conductive foam gasket is added to the design to support the load over the die during the vibrations and 2) U-shaped heatpipes are added to heatsink to reduce the temperature variation throughout the heatsink. Benefits include heatsink size and weight reduction, …

Proposed herein is a Metrics Transfer Protocol (MTP), which is a highly efficient and specialized protocol engineered for the rapid and streamlined transfer of metric data between clients and servers. By utilizing dual connections for control and data, MTP ensures that metrics are initialized accurately and that subsequent updates, reflecting only the changes or deltas, are communicated with minimal overhead. This design is ideal for applications requiring real-time performance monitoring, as it minimizes network latency and resource usage, providing a lightweight alternative to more general-purpose protocols, such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and the like.

Synthetic Generation Of Realistic Conversational Data Using Large Language Models, Andrew Tomlinson, Kelsey Kraus, Rupa Maiya
Defensive Publications Series
The biggest struggle that teams have in the current artificial intelligence (AI) arms race is attaining high-quality, representative data to train or test product solutions. Prompts to a Large Language Model (LLM) must be increasingly complex, and even then, models struggle to generate conversational data that could reasonably pass for actual conversation between two or more people. By using an iterative prompting method that builds in real-world variation, a system is proposed herein that provides for the ability to create more realistic conversational data.

Journal of Art, Design and Music
Wearable electronics fabricated on flexible and lightweight substrates are seen to provide substantial promise for portable devices, despite their usage being restricted by battery life. The textile technique that self-charges can capture and store both indoor and outdoor sunlight. Using dye-sensitized solar cells in the form of fibers (for solar energy), any of these energies may be readily converted into electricity and then kept in fiber-shaped supercapacitors as chemical energy. Due to the entire system's all-fiber-shaped construction, it would be simple to incorporate this self-charging textile technology with electronic textiles to make smart clothes that can run wearable or mobile …

We analyze a smooth pressure solver based on the ‘modified Poisson equation’: ∇2p + ξ2 ∂2p/∂t2 = f(u(t)), where p is the pressure field, u(t) is the velocity field measured by time-resolved image velocimetry, and ξ2 is a tunable parameter to control the solver’s diffusive behaviour in time. This modified Poisson equation aims at obtaining smooth pressure fields from potentially noisy image velocimetry measurements, and is a part of the current four-dimensional (4D) pressure solver (implemented in, for example, DaVis 10.2) by LaVision. This work focuses on investigating three aspects …

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects more than 95% of adults worldwide and is closely associated with various malignancies. Considering the complex life cycle of EBV, developing vaccines targeting key entry glycoproteins to elicit robust and durable adaptive immune responses may provide better protection. EBV gHgL-, gB- and gp42-specific antibodies in healthy EBV carriers contributed to sera neutralizing abilities in vitro, indicating that they are potential antigen candidates. To enhance the immunogenicity of these antigens, we formulate three nanovaccines by co-delivering molecular adjuvants (CpG and MPLA) and antigens (gHgL, gB or gp42). These nanovaccines induce robust humoral and cellular responses through efficient …
