Evaluating Predictions Of The Patterning Cascade Model Of Crown Morphogenesis In The Human Lower Mixed And Permanent Dentition, Dori E. Kennessey, Christopher M. Stojanowski, Kathleen S. Paul
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The patterning cascade model of crown morphogenesis has been studied extensively in a variety of organisms to elucidate the evolutionary history surrounding postcanine tooth form. The current research is the first to use a large modern human sample to examine whether the crown configuration of lower deciduous and permanent molars aligns with expectations derived from the model. This study has two main goals: 1) to determine if metameric and antimeric pairs significantly differ in size, accessory trait expression, and relative intercusp spacing, and 2) assess whether the relative distance among early-forming cusps accounts for observed variation in accessory cusp expression. …

Landscape ecology is an important subtopic of ecology. As a field, it is inherently interdisciplinary and provides opportunities to teach not only content, but transferable ecological and geographical skills. Given the broad spectrum of topics in general ecology courses, landscape ecology is often relegated to a single lecture or not covered at all, meaning that there is a need for concise, effective lesson content for teachers. Here, we present an adaptable, active lesson on landscape ecology that can be implemented to help address this gap and support student engagement and the application of content knowledge to local systems. Students are …

Total synthesis is a discipline within organic chemistry that is a constant force that propels the field forward. In our lab, we have immersed ourselves within the field of total synthesis to gain access to complex natural products, perform SAR studies, as well as highlight interesting methodology. Within these endeavors, we have completed the first asymmetric synthesis of membranolide. This has allowed us to explore potential biofilm eradication in our efforts to develop novel therapeutics to combat the ESKAPE pathogens and multi-drug resistance. We have also begun to pursue the first asymmetric total synthesis of the oxeatamides. By utilizing our …
The Influence Of Childhood Trauma On Dna Methylation Patterns And Sex-Specific Cortisol Stress Reactivity: A Secondary Analysis, Isabella F. Correia
The Influence Of Childhood Trauma On Dna Methylation Patterns And Sex-Specific Cortisol Stress Reactivity: A Secondary Analysis, Isabella F. Correia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Childhood trauma has been shown to significantly impact physical and mental health outcomes, leading to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, and difficulties in decision-making and maintaining relationships. Exposure to such trauma has the potential to dysregulate an individual’s stress response system, resulting in abnormal cortisol levels. Many studies suggest a lasting impact of early-life stress on DNA methylation patterns and, separately, cortisol stress reactivity. In addition, there are known sex differences in exposure to childhood trauma and cortisol reactivity; yet studies to date have not investigated whether there is an association to DNA methylation. This study utilized a …

In alignment with the US-led regime that champions free speech, the Republic of China (Taiwan) has assumed a prominent role in upholding the freedom of expression stance in East Asia. Rooted in historical origins and institutional conflicts between Taipei and Beijing, Taiwan has established a democratic system, presenting a distinct contrast with the Beijing system, and showcasing an alternative Chinese economy that embraces liberalism. Nevertheless, as Beijing’s influence grows stronger globally, Taiwan’s democratic politics have become increasingly delicate and sensitive. In the winter of 2020, Taiwan faced a critical moment in its control over media freedom, highlighting the ongoing tensions …

“Destiel Is Forever”: Negotiating Authenticity In The Cw’S Supernatural Family And Beyond, Hannah Lay
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the communicative constitution of authenticity and queerness. Because queerness has been policed and censored, notions of authenticity, in particular authentic queer representations, are fraught and sustaining to many LGBTQ+ and allied media consumers. The project focuses on the television series Supernatural—specifically, the unfolding of interactions in fan conventions, Twitter/X, and Tumblr involving celebrities and viewers of the series following a social breach, or rupture in the narrative. The last three episodes of Supernatural brought issues of queerness and authenticity to the fore for many viewers, making discussions about these themes compelling sites for multimodal data in the …

Roles Of Mitochondrial Chchd2 And Gpcr-Associated Β-Arrestin2 In The Pathogenesis Of Lewy Body Disorders, Teresa R. Kee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coiled-coil-helix-coiled-coil-helix domain containing 2 (CHCHD2) is a mitochondrial protein that plays important roles in cristae structure, oxidative phosphorylation, and apoptosis. Multiple mutations in CHCHD2 have been associated with Lewy body disorders (LBDs), such as Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), with the CHCHD2T61I mutation being the most widely studied. We generated the first transgenic mouse models expressing human CHCHD2WT and the PD-linked CHCHD2T61I mutation driven by the mPrP promoter. CHCHD2T61I Tg, but not CHCHD2WT Tg mice exhibit perinuclear mitochondrial aggregates, neuroinflammation, and have impaired long-term synaptic plasticity associated with synaptic dysfunction. Dopaminergic neurodegeneration, a hallmark of PD, …
Resolving Antarctic Margin Paleoceanography For Two Different Timescales And Archives, Theresa M. King
Resolving Antarctic Margin Paleoceanography For Two Different Timescales And Archives, Theresa M. King
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent decades have seen increased rates of ice mass loss from Antarctic ice sheets, through thinning of many ice shelves around the periphery of the continent. The most vulnerable are the glacial systems that are marine-terminating and grounded below sea level, a characteristic that exposes these systems to sea level rise and warming oceans. Enhanced basal melting under the influence of warm ocean water masses can lead to thinning and retreat of glaciers, and ultimately to the acceleration of grounded ice loss. To contextualize current ice mass loss and contribute to accurate model projections for future retreat scenarios, it is …

Cutaneous Warts Treated With A Single Dose Of The Homoeopathic Medicine Carcinosin 200c: An Evidence-Based Case Report, Sivakumar K, Mamatha Mohan
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Introduction: Cutaneous warts are hyperkeratotic protrusions over the skin caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). These are common throughout the world. Cutaneous warts can occur at any age but are unusual in early childhood and infancy. Warts are often diagnosed clinically on physical examination, but some dysplastic lesions may require laboratory confirmation of HPV. Spontaneous clearance is not always possible, and offering a reliable prognosis to the individual case is impossible. Even though warts are frequently encountered in the day-to-day practice of homoeopathy, and the results are promising, there are limited research studies available in the online database. Case Summary: …

Broadened Positive And Emotion Congruent Attentional Biases And Emotion Regulation, Michael Mctighe
Broadened Positive And Emotion Congruent Attentional Biases And Emotion Regulation, Michael Mctighe
Theses
Attentional processes or concentration of mental faculties is a vast area of research in the cognitive sciences that is complicated by an abundance of other variables. Evidence overwhelming suggests that exogenous attention is biased toward emotional stimuli. Prevailing theories suggest that positive emotions can improve attentional processes, and that a participant’s emotional state can lead people to better attend to congruent information. Systems associated with emotion regulation overlap with processes related to biased attention. This study sought to further explore the theories of broaden and build, and emotion congruence, while also exploring how emotion regulation influences various types of attentional …

Examining The Effectiveness Of A Collaborative Laboratory Activity On College Students’ Sense Of Community, Erika L. Doctor, Cassandra S. Korte, Patrick J. Cooper
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Research suggests that college students who feel a sense of community with their peers are more likely to earn higher grades and report positive perceptions of their overall academic experience. The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting institutional changes to class schedules have decreased opportunities for students to build a sense of community within their major. To compensate for this division and build a more robust scientific community, we developed a laboratory activity connecting first-year introductory biology students with second-year organic chemistry students. The laboratory activity teaches students how to use indicators as a signifier of enzyme activity on a colorimetric assay. …

Mariscal-Ochoa V. State, 140 Nev. Adv. Op. 42 (Jun. 27, 2024), Alisha Meschkow
Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
During voir dire, a prospective juror stated unclearly and quietly that she thought she recognized the defendant, Mariscal-Ochoa, as her nephew’s sexual abuser. She was struck for cause over Mariscal-Ochoa’s objections to strike the entire venire, and the lower court gave a curative instruction reiterating the presumption of innocence and clarifying the jurors’ role in disregarding uncharged acts. Mariscal-Ochoa was convicted for sexually abusing his nine-year-old stepdaughter after testifying. The Court affirmed, holding that the trial court was in the best position to determine whether prejudice was incurable during voir dire.

Palmer (Christopher) V. State Of Nevada, 130 Nev. Adv. Op. 41 (Jun. 27, 2024), Matthew Malters
Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The Nevada Court of Appeals determined that the District Court violated Christopher Deangelo Palmer’s Sixth Amendment right to a public trial by excluding his entire family from the courtroom during the complaining witness’s testimony without satisfying the four-factor test established in Waller v. Georgia. The Court found that the reasons provided for the partial closure, such as maintaining courtroom control, the misbehavior of Palmer’s brother, and Palmer’s recorded jail calls, did not constitute substantial reasons for the closure of the court. The District Court failed to consider reasonable alternatives to the closure and did not make sufficient findings to …
