Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in infants (iALL) is a high-risk subtype of childhood leukemia, with poor survival outcomes despite intensive therapies. Rearrangement of KMT2A (KMT2A-r) occurs in 70% of cases and is associated with chemotherapy resistance, early relapse, and rapid leukemic progression, all of which contribute to poor survival outcomes. The most common KMT2A-r in iALL is KMT2A::AFF1 (MLL::AF4), derived from t(4;11)(q21;23). This KMT2A-r generates a driver fusion oncogene which leads to epigenetic dysregulation of target gene transcription. Infant ALL’s cell of origin is thought to be a very early hematopoietic precursor, with transcriptomic studies of iALL blasts showing similarities to …

Exploring The Potential Of Neutrosophic Topological Spaces In Computer Science, A. A. Salama, Huda E. Khalid, Ahmed K. Essa, Ahmed G. Mabrouk

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Neutrosophic topological spaces (NTS) offer a novel framework for uncertainty modeling by incorporating degrees of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity. This paper investigates the potential applications of NTS in computer science. We provide background on neutrosophic sets and their extension to topological spaces. We then explore how NTS could be used for uncertainty modeling in data analysis (e.g., handling noisy data in sensor networks), pattern recognition (e.g., improving image classification with imprecise features), and information retrieval (e.g., enhancing search results by considering relevance uncertainty). We discuss the challenges associated with applying NTS and highlight promising areas for future research, such as …

Food Insecurity Cost Estimates For El Paso: 2023, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Gregory S. Schober, Steven L. Fullerton, Eva Moya

Border Region Modeling Project

Food insecurity is a fairly pervasive problem throughout the United States that is especially burdensome for low-income regions. While the latter is generally recognized, there have been very few efforts to quantify the dollar costs of food insecurity, especially at the regional level. This study attempts to do so for El Paso County, Texas. This is achieved by first adjusting for inflation cost estimates in a prior national level study. Regional differences with respect to the nation are then utilized to calculate comparable costs for El Paso. Results indicate that the economic damage wrought by food insecurity in El Paso …

Multi-Modal Alignment Via Hyperbolic Geometry, Suyu Liu Sep 2024

Multi-Modal Alignment Via Hyperbolic Geometry, Suyu Liu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Strong capabilities of generalization to unseen domains are vital for deep neural networks. While existing methods have shown promising results without source domain access, they mostly rely on models that are extensively pre-trained on source domains or overlook the intricate hierarchical structures inherent in visual and textual features. These limitations may have bad impacts on performances, especially on datasets with many classes. To overcome this, in this paper we propose a novel approach that projects the model onto hyperbolic geometry and employs geometric optimal transport to align cross-modal features in an unsupervised manner. Unlike Euclidean geometry, hyperbolic geometry is characterized …

Chapter 1. The impact of ESG disasters on Green and Brown firms

I investigate the effect of a firm’s prior ESG reputation on the market impact of ESG incidents. I find that firms with a better ESG reputation, i.e., higher ESG ratings, experience less negative stock-market reactions and analysts' forecast revisions compared to firms with a poorer ESG reputation. But managers of Greener firms, when producing earnings guidance, do not forecast a lower impact of these incidents on future earnings. Similarly, actual decreases in future earnings following these incidents are not significantly different between Green and Brown firms. Altogether, the …

Synthesis Of Amorphous And Various Phase-Pure Nanoparticles Of Nickel Phosphide With Uniform Sizes Via A Trioctylphosphine-Mediated Pathway, David Thompson, Adam S. Hoffman, Zachary R. Mansley, Sarah York, Feng Wang, Yimei Zhu, Simon R. Bare, Jingyi Chen

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nickel phosphides are of particular interest because they are highly active and stable catalysts for petroleum/biorefinery and hydrogen production. Despite their significant catalytic potential, synthesizing various phase-pure nickel phosphide nanoparticles of uniform size remains a challenge. In this work, we develop a robust trioctylphosphine (TOP)-mediated route to make highly uniform phase-pure Ni12P5, Ni2P, and Ni5P4 nanoparticles. The synthetic route forms amorphous Ni70P30 nanoparticle intermediates. The reactions can be stopped at the amorphous stage when amorphous particles are desired. The amount of P incorporation can be controlled by varying …
