Final Reports in ENST 411: Environmental Community Projects

We partnered with the Merrill W. Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy to produce an updated trail brochure for the Dale's Ridge Trail. Working alongside Conservation Coordinator, Rob Roberston, and volunteer graphic designer, Jessica Brothers, we were able to create a final draft of a brochure, currently in the final stages of reviewing before being sent off for printing. This brochure is a condensed version of the previous trail brochure, with more emphasis on visuals than text. Our group has also worked to set up the Conservancy to be able to produce a children's brochure, having led a group of students …

Human behavior and cognition are strikingly variable: people differ from one another in their preferences and abilities, and even from themselves across situations. Yet this diversity arises from common neural machinery shaped by the complex environments humans inhabit. A central objective of cognitive neuroscience is to understand how this varied experience emerges from interactions between brains, agents, and environments. In this dissertation, I argue that comparing behavior and neural computation across humans, artificial systems, and contexts is essential for understanding the flexibility of human cognition. Background: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are progressive neurodegenerative conditions where early detection is critical for timely intervention and care planning. However, current diagnostic methods are often inaccessible, costly, and delayed, especially for underserved populations. There is a growing need for scalable, noninvasive tools that can support timely diagnosis. Spontaneous speech contains rich acoustic and linguistic markers that can serve as noninvasive behavioral markers for cognitive decline. Foundation models, pretrained on large-scale audio or text data, generate high-dimensional embeddings that encode rich contextual and acoustic information.

Purpose of Review: To review relevant medial orbital anatomy as well as the most commonly used approaches to this space. Recent Findings: The use of the endoscopic endonasal approach for access to the medial orbit, including the intraconal space, has expanded allowing for removal of previously “inoperable” pathology. Summary: Each approach has their strength when considering access to the medial orbit, the transcaruncular incision allows for fast access with limited dissection while the transpalebral approach allows for visualization of the medial orbit but also extended access to the superior and lateral orbit. Influence Of Semantic Richness On Word Form Learning In Children With Developmental Language Disorder, Mckenzie Scoppa, Sara Benham, Allison Gladfelter, Amanda Steeb, Lisa Goffman

Purpose:

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) show a word form learning deficit, characterized by inaccurate and variable productions of novel words. We investigated whether, when a novel word form is introduced, incremental exposure to either a sparse visual referent or a relatively semantically rich story influences the phonetic accuracy and the phonological and articulatory variability of production in children with DLD and their typically developing (TD) peers.

A detailed experimental and computational study of the diastereoselectivity of cyclic sulfone synthesis by reaction of Rongalite with doubly electrophilic dienones is presented. Computational methods, including density functional theory, conformational search methods, and internal reaction coordinate methods, have been used to rationalize the diastereoselectivity of the reaction by transition-state modeling, and showcases the conformational subtleties of sulfur-containing rings. Extension of the original reaction to double intermolecular additions is also demonstrated along with a comparative study of Rongalite with the reactivity of other readily available sulfinate nucleophiles using competition and exchange experiments.

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article argues for a NATO-EU–led security strategy to achieve long-term deterrence in Ukraine after the end of the Russia-Ukraine War. Unlike existing analyses, this article straddles the strategic level of deterrence, outlining an operational road map. Its historical example of the Iraq War shows that long-term security requires the development of plans before a conflict ends, long-term commitments, and multilateral—not unilateral—security efforts. The proposed solution provides strategic planners and policymakers with a low-risk, high-reward approach that leverages burden sharing through a multinational framework.

This article argues E. H. Carr’s classic conception of power provides enduring lessons for national security, but these lessons are easily lost in application. Unlike much of the existing literature, this article emphasizes how modern conceptions of power convey an illusion of balance, while the national security bureaucracy constrains the effective synchronization of power. The analysis leverages both historical and contemporary case studies to identify what a balanced conception of power looks like in practice, with the hope of informing US national security strategy and policy in today’s complex security environment.

Phosphate (Pi) and calcium (Ca2+) are essential mineral ions that play coordinated roles in maintaining normal cellular functions. While various steps of calcium signaling are well characterized, emerging evidence suggests the critical role of both intracellular and extra cellular phosphate in regulating intracellular Ca2+. In the cytoplasm, phosphate influences ATP production and organelle calcium buffering and influences the activity of calcium pumps, such as sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) and the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA). Extracellular phosphate, taken up via sodium-dependent phosphate transporters, triggers signaling cascades that affect the processes of calcium influx, storage, and release. Autoimmune disorders disproportionately affect females, a bias largely attributed to estrogen's modulation of B lymphocyte development and tolerance. Bisphenol A (BPA), a common plastic monomer, shows estrogenic activity and acts as an endocrine disruptor and epigenetic modifier. This thesis examines how BPA may increase autoimmune risk by mimicking estrogen such that it can excite estrogen receptors which rescue autoreactive B lymphocytes from apoptosis.
