Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto Sep 2024

Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Increased utilization and prolonged dwell times of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are directly related to the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)- the fifth most common type of healthcare associated infection (HAI). The National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) uses the Standardized Utilization Ratio (SUR) metric to measure and compare device utilization in acute care hospitals across the nation. The national target SUR benchmark is 1.0, and a SUR under 1.0 indicates less device usage than NHSN predicts on an inpatient unit. In 2022 a Neuro Med-Surg unit experienced an overall SUR of 1.047 with 2 CAUTIs observed. A …

Adr In The Ongoing Experiment Of American Law, Carli N. Conklin

Faculty Publications

To engage in the development of American law— past or present—is to engage in a great and ongoing experiment. It is an exercise of the imagination. And one place where American law has been most imaginative is in the field of alternative dispute resolution. It is an area of law that, in its creativity and emphasis on the person as a whole, is particularly well-suited to respond to the guiding question of our constitutional democracy: how might we live well together?

Pharmacy

Aims

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Nicotinamide phosphoribosyl-transferase (NAMPT) was found to be over-expressed in several cancers including CRC. NAMPT-Antisense (NAMPT-AS) is a novel long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) recently reported to be associated with triple negative breast cancer. However, its role in CRC has not been investigated. This study was designed to explore the role of lncRNA NAMPT-AS in CRC, and to investigate its circulating serum exosomal levels in subjects with/without CRC.

Main methods

We analyzed CRC patients' data in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). LncRNA NAMPT-AS and NAMPT mRNA levels were …

Context. The transit technique has been very efficient over the past decades in detecting planet-candidate signals. The so-called statistical validation approach has become a popular way of verifying a candidate’s planetary nature. However, the incomplete consideration of false-positive scenarios and data quality can lead to misinterpretation of the results. Aims. In this work, we revise the planetary status of K2-399 b, a validated planet with an estimated false-positive probability of 0.078% located in the middle of the so-called Neptunian desert, and hence a potential key target for atmospheric prospects. Methods. We used radial velocity data from the …

Coal Ash Triggers An Elevated Temperature Landfill Development: Lessons From The Bristol Virginia Solid Waste Landfill Neighboring Community, Reagan Patton Witt, Marcelo I. Guzman

UK CARES Faculty Publications

Landfills for disposing of solid waste are designed, located, managed, and monitored facili- ties expected to comply with government regulations to prevent contamination of the surrounding environment. After the average life expectancy of a typical landfill (30 to 50 years), a large investment in the construction, operation, final closure, and 30-year monitoring of a new site is needed. In this case study, we provide a holistic explanation of the unexpected development of elevated temperature landfills (ETLFs), such as that in the city of Bristol (United States) on the border of the states of Virginia and Tennessee, including the initial role …

Analysis Of Data Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth Sep 2024

Analysis Of Data Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

A strategy for accommodating outlying observations, as well as non-representative, suspect, missing, or otherwise troubling observations, is described. Each unusual observation is decomposed into the sum of two components. One component is the value implied by the trusted observations in the data set. The other component is the unusual part. In this way, the fitting of the data set can then proceed, and, additionally, a numerical value can be ascribed to the unusual part. The method offers not only an antidote for observations with irregular numerical values, which often have the power to contaminate and alter analyses, but also a …

Kentucky Surficial Geologic Map Compilation Database (Version 1), Matthew Massey

Research Data--KGS

The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS), a state-supported independent research center within the University of Kentucky, is committed to providing accurate and unbiased geologic information on natural resources, environmental issues, and natural hazards in Kentucky. While Kentucky boasts complete coverage by 1:24,000-scale geologic bedrock maps, surficial materials have been largely overlooked, except in regions with thick deposits obscuring the bedrock. Given the increasing trends in economic development and urbanization, detailed surficial geologic mapping has become crucial for supporting geotechnical planning, environmental management, and hazard assessment. In response, KGS has prioritized new, detailed surficial geologic mapping since 2004, specifically targeting areas anticipated …

A Systematic Unified Approach For Addressing Temporal Instability In Road Safety Analysis, Kazi Redwan Shabab, Tanmoy Bhowmik, Mohamed H. Zaki, Naveen Eluru

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multivariate models are widely employed for crash frequency analysis in traffic safety literature. In the context of analyzing data for multiple instances (such as years), it becomes essential to evaluate the stability of parameters over time. The current research proposes a novel approach, labelled the mixed spline indicator pooled model, that offers significant enhancement relative to current approaches employed for capturing temporal instability. The proposed approach entails carefully creating independent variables that allow us to measure parameter slope changes over time and can be easily integrated into existing methodological frameworks. The current research effort compares four multivariate model systems: year …

Intuitionism, Justification Logic, And Doxastic Reasoning, Vincent A. Peluce Sep 2024

Intuitionism, Justification Logic, And Doxastic Reasoning, Vincent A. Peluce

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this Dissertation, we examine a handful of related themes in the philosophy of logic and mathematics. We take as a starting point the deeply philosophical, and—as we argue, deeply Kantian—views of L.E.J. Brouwer, the founder of intuitionism. We examine his famous first act of intuitionism. Therein, he put forth both a critical and a constructive idea. This critical idea involved digging a philosophical rift between what he thought of himself as doing and what he thought of his contemporaries, specifically Hilbert, as doing. He sought to completely separate mathematics from mathematical language, and thereby logic. In chapter 3, we …

Hydrogen Wettability Of Saudi Arabian Basalt: Implications For H2 Geo-Storage, Muhammad Ali, Nurudeen Yekeen, Mujahid Ali, Amer Alanazi, Muhammad Shahzad Kamal, Alireza Keshavarz, Hussein Hoteit

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The large-scale subsurface storage of hydrogen is a crucial element of the hydrogen economy value chain and is an essential process for achieving the successful replacement of carbon-based fuels. The wettability of the rock-H2-brine system, as quantified by contact angle measurement, has been the focus of most recent research due to its impacts on fluid flow, H2 migration and recovery efficiency during underground hydrogen storage (UHS). However, the reported contact angle data sets are quite inconsistent, and there are relatively few literature reports regarding the contact angles of H2/brine on Saudi Arabian basalt (SAB) compared to the contact angle data …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Microplastics (MPs) and other organic matters in textile wastewater have posed a formidable challenge for treatment processes, particularly in the primary stages such as ultrafiltration (UF). UF plays a crucial role in preventing the entry of pollutants into subsequent treatment steps. However, the performance efficiency of UF membranes is compromised by the potential fouling of membrane pores by MPs, dyes and other organic pollutants such as bovine serum albumin (BSA). This study focuses on enhancing UF membrane performance, specifically its antifouling properties, through the development of high-performance membranes using MIL-53(Fe) metal-organic framework (MOF) particles (noted as MIL-53 here). Various concentrations …

Fractional Derivative-Based Analysis Of The Heat Transfer Properties Of Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder, Anas Saeb Alhasan Sep 2024

Fractional Derivative-Based Analysis Of The Heat Transfer Properties Of Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder, Anas Saeb Alhasan

Theses

Understanding the complex interplay between the contracting behavior of the cylinder and the fluid flow dynamics has implications for the design of porous structures for heat exchange and filtration systems. In this study, we investigate the dynamics and thermal behavior of fluid flow past a contracting permeable infinite cylinder. First, we developed a mathematical model based on the Navier-Stokes equations to describe the fluid dynamics around the contracting permeable infinite cylinder. A new simple well-behaved definition of fractional derivative called conformable fractional derivative introduced by authors Khalil et al. [3] is employed to generalize the PDE’s of momentum and energy. …

The Effect Of Gamma-Ray Irradiation On Polymer-Graphene Nanocomposite Interfaces, Sagar Patil, Josh Kemppainen, Travis Wavrunek, Gregory Odegard

Michigan Tech Publications

CNT yarns are used in ultra-high strength composites for use in manned deep-space vehicles. It has been previously demonstrated through experiments that gamma-ray irradiation substantially improves the mechanical performance of these composites. It is unclear how the irradiation affects the mechanical response of the CNT yarn/polymer interface that ultimately leads to these panel-level performance improvements. Physical insight into this process could enable further improvements in the CNT yarn/polymer interface design in the future. The objective of this research is to use molecular dynamics simulation to provide physical insight into the effect of gamma-ray irradiation on the mechanical behavior (interfacial interaction …

256-Level Honey Memristor-Based In-Memory Neuromorphic System, Harshvardhan Uppaluru, Zoe Templin, Mohammed Rafeeq Khan, Md Omar Faruque, Feng Zhao, Jinhui Wang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Promising synaptic behavior has been exhibited by memristors based on natural organic materials. Such memristor-based neuromorphic systems offer notable benefits, including environmental sustainability, low production and disposal costs, non-volatile storage capability, and bio/Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility. Here, a 256-level honey memristor-based neuromorphic system is experimentally evaluated for image recognition. In detail, first, 256-level honey memristors are manufactured and tested based on in-house technology; next, the non-linear characteristics and inherent variation of honey memristor devices, which lead to imprecise weight updates and limit the inference accuracy, are investigated. Experimental results indicate that the inference accuracy of the 256-level honey memristor-based neuromorphic …

A New Air-Assisted Flare Tip Design For Managing Gas Flare Emissions (Cfd Analysis), Ahmed A. Maaroof, Joseph D. Smith, Mohammed H.S. Zangana

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, flares have been considered as a major source of air pollution from the petroleum refining industry. The United Nations has instigated an international effort related to the management of flare emissions to reduce the global warming impact related to flaring. Eliminating or removing the need for gas flares is difficult because these devices are generally used as safety devices to allow the combustion of flammable gases in a controlled fashion which supports safe operation. However, reducing flaring is generally possible using well-designed, efficiently operated flare equipment. In general, flare performance can be enhanced following the API-521 methodology and using …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Evaluating the Architect's Role in Construction Contracts is Vital for Improving the Contractual Relationship and Preventing Disputes. Standard Contracts Define the Architect as an Owner's Agent And/or a Contract Administrator. Studies Often Use Qualitative and Subjective Evaluations to Analyze the Architect's Role. However, there is a Lack of Quantitative Measures that Objectively Evaluate the Architect's Capacities in Construction Contracts. This Paper Fills This Knowledge Gap. This Study Proposes a Quantitative Graph Theory-Based Approach to Analyze the Architect's Roles under Three Standard Forms of Construction Contracts in the US: (1) Extracting and Classifying Party Interactions; (2) Modeling the Interactions using Network …

Reexamination Of Vacuum-Polarization Corrections To The Self-Energy In Muonic Bound Systems, B. Ohayon, Ulrich D. Jentschura Sep 2024

Reexamination Of Vacuum-Polarization Corrections To The Self-Energy In Muonic Bound Systems, B. Ohayon, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In muonic bound systems, the dominant radiative correction is due to vacuum polarization. Yet, for the interpretation of precision experiments, self-energy effects are also important. In turn, additional vacuum-polarization loops perturb the self-energy. Here we show that combined self-energy vacuum-polarization effects can perturb the bound-state self-energy at the percent level in one-muon bound systems with nuclear charges Z=1-6. We also update previous treatments of the corrections for muonic hydrogen, muonic deuterium, and muonic helium bound systems.

Relativistic And Recoil Corrections To Vacuum Polarization In Muonic Systems: Three-Photon Exchange, Gauge Invariance, And Numerical Values, Gregory S. Adkins, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For an accurate theoretical description of muonic bound systems, it is crucial to consistently treat relativistic and recoil corrections to vacuum polarization. The one-loop vacuum-polarization effect is by far the dominant quantum electrodynamic (QED) energy correction for bound muons, being of order α(Zα)2mr, where α is the fine-structure constant, Z is the nuclear charge number, and mr is the reduced mass. Gauge invariance of the relativistic and recoil corrections to vacuum polarization of order α(Zα)4mr is investigated with respect to nonretarded and standard, renormalized variants of Coulomb gauge. The invariance is shown after including three-photon exchange diagrams. Our derivation is …
