Two Essays On Electric Vehicle Subsidies And Auto Industries In China, Jing Liang Sep 2024

Two Essays On Electric Vehicle Subsidies And Auto Industries In China, Jing Liang

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

China’s automobile market is the world’s largest automobile market. In recent decades, the development of China’s automobile market has been closely tied to the policies of the Chinese government. This dissertation explores the impact of two key government policies - China’s auto subsidy policy and China’s joint venture policy - on the Chinese automobile market over the past several years. Chapter 1 investigates the pass-through and distributional effects of electric vehicle (EV) subsidies in China. It evaluates how these effects affect market equilibrium and welfare. Empirical results indicate that EV subsidy pass-through to consumers is more than complete, disproportionately favoring …

The spatial arrangement of immune cells within the tumor microenvironment (TME) and their interactions play critical roles in the initiation and development of cancer. Several advanced technologies such as imaging mass cytometry (IMC) providing the immunological landscape of the TME with single-cell resolution. In this study, we develop a new method to quantify the spatial proximity between different cell types based on single-cell spatial data. Using this method on IMC data from 416 lung adenocarcinoma patients, we show that the proximity between different cell types is more correlated with patient prognosis compared to the traditional features such immune cell density …

Prospects And Challenges Of Tissue-Derived Extracellular Vesicles, Justin C Lee, Roslyn M Ray, Tristan A Scott

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are considered a vital component of cell-to-cell communication and represent a new frontier in diagnostics and a means to identify pathways for therapeutic intervention. Recently, studies have revealed the importance of tissue-derived EVs (Ti-EVs), which are EVs present in the interstitial spaces between cells, as they better represent the underlying physiology of complex, multicellular tissue microenvironments in biology and disease. EVs are native, lipid bilayer membraned nano-sized particles produced by all cells that are packaged with varied functional biomolecules including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. They are implicated in short- and long-range cellular communication and may elicit …

GPR56, an adhesion G-protein coupled receptor (aGPCRs) with constitutive and ligand-promoted activity, is involved in many physiological and pathological processes. Whether the receptor's constitutive or ligand-promoted activation occur through the same molecular mechanism, and whether different activation modes lead to functional selectivity between G proteins is unknown. Here we show that GPR56 constitutively activates both G12 and G13. Unlike constitutive activation and activation with 3-α-acetoxydihydrodeoxygedunin (3αDOG), stimulation with an antibody, 10C7, directed against GPR56's extracellular domain (ECD) led to an activation that favors G13 over G12. An autoproteolytically deficient mutant, GPR56-T383A, was also activated by 10C7 indicating that the tethered …

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) can encounter resistance through various mechanisms, limiting their effectiveness. Our recent research showed that PARPi alone can induce drug resistance by promoting autophagy. Moreover, our studies have revealed that anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) plays a role in regulating the survival of ovarian cancer cells undergoing autophagy. Here, we explored whether the ALK-inhibitor crizotinib could enhance the efficacy of PARPi by targeting drug-induced autophagic ovarian cancer cell and xenograft models. Our investigation demonstrates that crizotinib enhances the anti-tumor activity of PARPi across multiple ovarian cancer cells. Combination therapy with crizotinib and olaparib reduced cell viability and …

Successful Treatment Of A Chronic Recurrent Expanding Hematoma Of The Thigh, Gianfranco Galantini, Bakhtawar Mushtaq, Jesse Ottaway, Charles Long

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

Chronic expanding hematoma (CEH) is a rare entity that poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to persistent growth, risk of recurrence, and potential for blood loss anemia. The most common etiologies of CEH are trauma or surgery. It is thought to occur due to irritant effects of blood breakdown products, causing bleeding from capillaries in chronic granulation tissue. Although treatment of CEH is variable, complete surgical excision of the hematoma and its pseudocapsule is the gold standard. We present a case of a 15-year CEH that was initially treated with limited evacuation of the hematoma and cavity decortication, resulting in …

Despite increasing in mass approximately 100-fold during larval life, the Drosophila CNS maintains its characteristic form. Dynamic interactions between the overlying basement membrane and underlying surface glia are known to regulate CNS structure in Drosophila, but the genes and pathways that establish and maintain CNS morphology during development remain poorly characterized. To identify genes that regulate CNS shape in Drosophila, we conducted an EMS-based, forward genetic screen of the second chromosome, uncovered 50 mutations that disrupt CNS structure, and mapped these alleles to 17 genes. Analysis of whole genome sequencing data wedded to genetic studies uncovered the affected gene for …

A Red Teaming Framework For Securing Ai In Maritime Autonomous Systems, Mathew J. Walter, Aaron Barrett, Kimberly Tam

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being ubiquitously adopted to automate processes in science and industry. However, due to its often intricate and opaque nature, AI has been shown to possess inherent vulnerabilities which can be maliciously exploited with adversarial AI, potentially putting AI users and developers at both cyber and physical risk. In addition, there is insufficient comprehension of the real-world effects of adversarial AI and an inadequacy of AI security examinations; therefore, the growing threat landscape is unknown for many AI solutions. To mitigate this issue, we propose one of the first red team frameworks for evaluating the AI security …

Brief Of 15 Scholars Of Law And Medicine As Amici Curiae In Support Of The Petition For Rehearing En Banc, Charles Duan

Amicus Briefs & Court Filings

The panel decision announces an over-expansive, ill-defned doctrine of inducement, in which well-pled allegations may be based on nothing more than ordinary marketing materials and mandatory labeling--even when those materials never recite or describe the claimed invention. This unprecedented and erroneous expansion of inducement liability leaves the law uncertain. It is now unclear, among other things, what statements a generic frm may make about its own product's equivalence and how much of the generic product's labeling information must be revised--assuming that such revisions are even regulatorily allowed--in order to avoid the risk of an inducement lawsuit.

Interviewing The Interviewers: How Qualitative Professors Assess Interviews In Their Classes, Meredith C. Massey, Leia K. Cain

The Qualitative Report

When reviewing the literature relating to what instructors of qualitative research courses are teaching in their courses, we found a gap regarding qualitative faculty's motivations behind what they teach and whether they use teaching tools such as rubrics in their assessment practices. We utilized general qualitative methods to explore and describe how instructors of qualitative methodology courses conceptualize and design interview-based assessments. By conducting structured interviews with five faculty members, we embraced interpretivist descriptive traditions and sought to obtain thick, rich descriptions of each participant’s perspectives and experiences. After coding interview transcripts, we created themes to represent participant beliefs that …

Caring For Adolescent Learners In The Virtual Classroom: Lessons From The Covid-19 Pandemic, Stephanie Welch, Jeasik Cho

The Qualitative Report

In the recent past, fully online instruction has been most prominent at the higher education level, though online K-12 schools have lately gained some traction. However, the COVID-19 pandemic precipitated new potential for rapid expansion of online K-12 education. As these settings continue to develop, the unique social emotional needs of adolescent learners must be considered, and the need for a robustly developed online pedagogy of care is pressing. An unexpected and untapped resource for developing a framework for an online pedagogy of care can be found in examining the practices of traditionally face-to-face teachers who were unexpectedly thrust into …

Parasites are generally associated with lower income countries in tropical and subtropical areas. Still, they are also prevalent in low-income communities in the southern United States. Studies characterizing the epidemiology of parasites in the United States are limited, resulting in little comprehensive understanding of the problem. This study investigated the environmental contamination of parasites in the southern United States by determining each parasite's contamination rate and burden in five low-income communities. A total of 499 soil samples of approximately 50 g were collected from public parks and private residences in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas. A technique using …

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer with a ~50% response rate to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy. To identify predictive biomarkers, we integrated bulk and single-cell RNA-seq with spatial transcriptomics from a cohort of 186 samples from 116 patients, including bulk RNA-seq from 14 matched pairs pre- and post-ICB. In non-responders, tumors show evidence of increased tumor proliferation, neuronal stem cell markers, and IL-1. Responders have increased type I/II interferons and pre-existing tissue resident (Trm) CD8 or Vδ1 γδ T cells that functionally converge with overlapping antigen-specific transcriptional programs and clonal expansion of public TCRs. Spatial …

From Publius To Santos: Congressional Expulsion And The Enforcement Of Legislative Virtue, Matthew A. Edwards Sep 2024

From Publius To Santos: Congressional Expulsion And The Enforcement Of Legislative Virtue, Matthew A. Edwards

Emory Law Journal Online

On December 1, 2023, in a historic decision, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to expel Congressperson George Santos. Prior to Santos’s expulsion, only two members of the House had been expelled since the Civil War. In fact, although he was under indictment, Santos was the first member to be expelled from the House without first being convicted of a federal crime or supporting the Confederacy. Santos presented an unusual case, however. By the time that he was expelled, Santos was nationally reviled for fabricating nearly every aspect of his personal biography. Although it is difficult to know what the …
