Chronic alcohol abuse has been shown to lead to a number of cognitive, behavioral, and developmental deficits. One of the possible consequences of this abuse is Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS), a condition characterized by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1) that impairs various neurological functions, particularly memory and its various stages (i.e., storage and retrieval). Management of WKS requires a deeper understanding of memory processing as well as carefully structured therapy methods that cater to the unique needs of impacted individuals. Therefore, accurate and reliable identification coupled with early intervention strategies for this population is a clinical and forensic priority.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) as it relates to firesetting has been neither researched adequately by scholars nor discussed frequently enough by public safety professionals. The purpose of this article is to initiate a conversation that needs to take place regarding the intersection of FASD and firesetting behaviors.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by social skill deficits, cognitive rigidity, and a range of behavioral symptoms. As would be expected of any disorder characterized as a spectrum, the presentation and severity of ASD symptoms vary widely by individual. Careful consideration of each ASD symptom and any comorbid disorders is necessary for effective treatment. Therefore, successful treatment likely requires expertise in several different areas.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) And The Criminal Justice System: An Introduction For Professionals, Jerrod Brown, Barbara Luskin, Bethany Hastings

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States. Emerging in early childhood, ASD is characterized by deficits in communication, social interaction, and behavior. As its name suggests, ASD encompasses a broad number of symptoms, deficits, and degrees of severity, and although the majority of individuals with ASD will not become involved in the criminal justice system, the symptoms of ASD can have a debilitating effect in this setting. The familiarization of criminal justice professionals with ASD has the potential to improve short- and long-term outcomes for individuals diagnosed with this disorder.
