This article explores the challenges associated with identifying and diagnosing fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in detoxification centers throughout the United States. Detoxification centers are natural entry points to the health care system for many individuals with complex health conditions. These facilities continue to be under utilized as a portal for screening, identifying, diagnosing, and treating patients with FASD. The purpose of this article is to increase awareness about the tremendous potential detoxification centers have for addressing these needs through the services they offer. Additionally, strategies for improving FASD services within these settings are discussed. This article assumes the reader …

In recent decades, synthetic or designer drugs have continuously emerged like weeds. The manufacturers and distributors of synthetic substances are encouraged, at least in part, by the fuzzy legal status and low manufacturing cost of these drugs. Removing the threat of designer drugs has proven problematic for U.S. law enforcement because many of these designer drugs remain legal until the substance’s harm can be clearly established. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong condition characterized by a diverse set of cognitive, social, and adaptive functioning deficits caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. Despite these pervasive symptoms, individuals with FASD often go undiagnosed and untreated, sometimes resulting in interactions with fire service responders, law enforcement professionals, and other community providers. Case studies, popular media accounts, and interviews with caregivers of children with FASD suggest that this disorder’s symptoms may be a variable to consider in some firesetting cases. The devastating impact of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) on competency to stand trial is highlighted by summarizing the case law review literature. Although these case law reviews may not be peer-reviewed and might include inaccuracies, case law reviews can illuminate the complexities of accounting for FASD during legal proceedings. In particular, a failure to adequately consider the impact of the cognitive and adaptive symptoms of FASD on a defendant’s competency to stand trial and as a mitigating factor for sentencing have served as the basis of a number of appeals. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive (e.g., executive function), social (e.g., communication), and adaptive (e.g., decision-making ability) deficits. Because FASD often co-occurs with other psychiatric and substance use disorders, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment can be challenging. Art therapy (AT) is one promising treatment modality for FASD. This is especially true of children who suffer from both FASD and a history of trauma. AT presents many potential benefits for FASD such as improved emotional regulation, relaxation strategies, interpersonal communication skills, self-esteem, and memory functioning. Secure attachment with a caregiver creates a foundation for psychological stability and fosters resilience in the face of future experiences of undue stress. In the face of unavailable, abusive or emotionally disconnected attachment figures, developing children are increasingly vulnerable in ways that deleteriously impact their quality of life and mental health across the life span. Further, the lack of secure attachment in combination with traumatic experiences increases the risk of antisocial and criminal behavior. Confabulation occurs when an individual inaccurately recounts memories or events that are untrue or chronologically out of sequence but does so without the intent to deceive. The source of this behavior is often misunderstood, associated with a broad range of disorders, and continues to be problematic for criminal justice professionals and mental health professionals alike.
