Finite Element Modeling And Analysis Of Rc Shear Walls With Cutting-Out Openings, Islam M. Saad, Mohamed Emara, Ayman El-Zohairy, Sherif El-Beshlawy Sep 2024

Finite Element Modeling And Analysis Of Rc Shear Walls With Cutting-Out Openings, Islam M. Saad, Mohamed Emara, Ayman El-Zohairy, Sherif El-Beshlawy

Faculty Publications

In recent decades, reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls have been one of the best structural solutions to resist lateral load in high-rise buildings. Shear wall openings are essential for preparations and architectural requirements, which weaken the wall, reducing bearing capacity, energy absorption, and stiffness while also causing stress concentrations. This paper presents a comprehensive finite element (FE) investigation of the behavior and performance of RC shear walls with openings and subjected to lateral loads. The study aims to evaluate the influence of various parameters, such as opening location, size, wall aspect ratio, axial load, and concrete strength, which affect the …

Success Treating Substance Use Disorder: A Case Study Of Minnesota Adult And Teen Challenge, John Joseph Lenss Sep 2024

Success Treating Substance Use Disorder: A Case Study Of Minnesota Adult And Teen Challenge, John Joseph Lenss

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge (MNTC) is an addiction treatment center. The reason for this qualitative case study was to discover why clients of substance use disorder treatment programs believe that they can graduate from their program when 50% of those who start the same long-term program drop out. This case study focused on graduates from MNTC in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This study discovered the graduates' common attributes that may improve MNTC treatment center programs, which could decrease the number of people who walk away from addiction recovery programs prematurely and increase the number of those who graduate. According to MNTC …

Effects Of The Covid-19 Vaccine Mandate On Healthcare Workers’ Decisions To Refuse Vaccination And Quit Their Jobs From Canadian Hospitals, Henry Bwang Ewane Sep 2024

Effects Of The Covid-19 Vaccine Mandate On Healthcare Workers’ Decisions To Refuse Vaccination And Quit Their Jobs From Canadian Hospitals, Henry Bwang Ewane

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

COVID-19 vaccine uptake and compliance implementation challenges exist among some Canadian healthcare workers (HCWs), including hospital administrators, despite free vaccination as a preventive measure to control the spread. Earlier studies have examined COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and refusal among Canadian HCWs, but not how the -19 vaccine and vaccine mandates may have influenced their decisions to refuse vaccination and quit their jobs. This qualitative phenomenological study involved exploring how Canadian hospital HCWs’ lived experiences with the COVID-19 vaccine and vaccine mandates affected their decisions to refuse COVID-19 vaccination and quit their jobs. The theory of reasoned action was used to guide …

Ecology Of Tetrodotoxin Toxicity And Ectoparasite Burden Of Hong Kong Newt Populations, Wing Yan Yip Sep 2024

Ecology Of Tetrodotoxin Toxicity And Ectoparasite Burden Of Hong Kong Newt Populations, Wing Yan Yip

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Many amphibians have defensive chemicals in their skin. Newts from the family Salamandridae possess a potent neurotoxin - tetrodotoxin (TTX). TTX toxicity has been studied intensively, with the aim of revealing the function and origin of TTX in this family. Research has found within- and between-population variations in North American newts like Taricha, possibly related to co-evolution with its predator, symbiotic bacteria, or several life history traits (e.g., sex and life stage). However, our knowledge about TTX ecology in the Asian newt clade is relatively limited. Additionally, a group of water mites, Lurchibates, specifically parasitizes Asian newts, but …

The landlord challenged the tenant's succession rights to a Mitchell-Lama apartment. The tenant argued that he resided with his brother in the apartment for at least one year prior to the brother's death. The court found that the tenant failed to provide sufficient documentation to establish primary residency. The court upheld the landlord's denial of the succession rights application.

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

PURPOSE: The lamina cribrosa (LC) is hypothesized to be the site of initial axonal damage in glaucoma with the circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL-T) widely used as a standard metric for quantifying the glaucomatous damage. The purpose of this study was to determine in vivo, 3-dimensional (3D) differences in the microstructure of the LC in eyes of nonhuman primates (NHPs) with naturally occurring glaucoma.

METHODS: Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans (Leica, Chicago, IL, USA) of the optic nerve head were acquired from a colony of 50 adult rhesus monkeys suspected of having high prevalence of glaucoma. The …

Ret Mutated Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (Nsclc) In Association With Patients From Central America, Lily Z. Chen, William J. Gibson, Brian C. Boulmay Sep 2024

Ret Mutated Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (Nsclc) In Association With Patients From Central America, Lily Z. Chen, William J. Gibson, Brian C. Boulmay

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

The rearranged during transfection (RET) gene is on chromosome 10 (10q11.2) and normally encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase that plays a role in the development of the kidney, nervous, and respiratory systems. Aberrant RET gene activation can occur through gene mutations, gene fusions, or over expression leading to uncontrolled cell growth and the development of malignancy. The RET gene was first identified in 1985 as a protooncogene playing a role in the pathogenesis of lymphoma, and mutations are now associated with numerous cancers including lung, thyroid, breast, colon, prostate, and kidney. Activating RET mutations are estimated to occur in 1-2% …

Performance-Tunable Thermal Barrier Coating For Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Composites Via Flame Spraying, Heejin Kim, Kandasamy Praveen, Min Wook Lee, Juhyeong Lee Sep 2024

Performance-Tunable Thermal Barrier Coating For Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Composites Via Flame Spraying, Heejin Kim, Kandasamy Praveen, Min Wook Lee, Juhyeong Lee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are essential for improving the heat resistance of materials operating in high-temperature environments. This paper proposes a new method for manufacturing double-layered TBC with graded porosity for carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. The TBC was created by a flame spraying process, consisting of relatively dense and porous layers: (1) a dense layer was produced by spraying yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) particles directly onto neat carbon fabric substrate and (2) a porous layer was prepared by co-spraying YSZ particles with sacrificial polyetheretherketone (PEEK) particles. The porosity of the porous layer was controlled by varying a PEEK injection distance …

The Association Between Race And Obesity After Controlling For Dietary Behaviors Among Adolescents, Jasmine Nicole Williams Sep 2024

The Association Between Race And Obesity After Controlling For Dietary Behaviors Among Adolescents, Jasmine Nicole Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Childhood obesity has become a critical global public health concern due to its significant, long-term impact on overall quality of life and physical health. Despite efforts, there is a lack of information that includes all races and ages to combat childhood obesity. This study addressed the association between race and obesity after controlling for dietary behaviors among adolescents in Georgia, using quantitative cross-sectional data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS). Guided by the social ecological model, the research investigated how demographic factors and dietary behaviors influence obesity rates. Specifically, the study explored the association between age, race, …

De Becker V. Uhs Of Delaware, Inc., 140 Nev. Adv. Op. 58 (Sept. 19, 2024), Hailey Hamilton

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

When a negligence claim alleges providers of health care were negligent when rendering services in a professional relationship, the proper claim is of professional negligence requiring an expert affidavit under NRS 41A.071. As pertaining to informed consent, a claim only constitutes battery if a plaintiff claims not to have consented at all to the treatment or procedure. Where a plaintiff consented to a particular treatment or procedure, and a question arises regarding whether the scope of that consent was exceeded, an expert medical affidavit is necessary under NRS 41A.071. The Supreme Court of Nevada clarified that when an accompanying expert …

Possible Exit Strategy From The Imf Programme, Ishrat Husain Dr. Sep 2024

Possible Exit Strategy From The Imf Programme, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

There seems to be a broad consensus that it is in Pakistan’ s best interests to exit from the IMF programme. The reasons are quite obvious — the loss of autonomous decision-making by the sovereign, inability to set its own priorities and their phasing, timing and sequencing, and getting out of a straitjacket framework of short-term performance criteria, structural benchmarks agreed with the IMF.
