Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

Abstract

Portland cement, a crucial construction material, has been used extensively in various geotechnical projects. However, its over-reliance has led to environmental concerns, particularly regarding carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions during its production. Sustainable development involves the development of cement alternatives that are less damaging to the environment. Geopolymer cement can be a potential partial replacement for conventional Portland cement that can minimize carbon dioxide emissions and convert various by-products into useful products. Traditional geopolymer cement is composed of two components: an alkaline activator solution and a solid aluminosilicate precursor (other than water), and its production requires the manipulation …

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Examining the diverse scenarios and situations underlying fatal shootings by on-duty officers charged with murder and manslaughter is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies and policy recommendations. Previous studies focus on victim characteristics but often overlook motivations and situational contexts. To address this gap, this study uses data from the Henry A. Wallace Police Crime Database to examine situational contexts of on-duty fatal shootings. Specifically, we explore how the nature of the encounter, environment, weapons and bodycam presence, and officers’ perceptions influence these events. By analyzing these factors, we aim to understand the underlying causes of fatal shootings.

The Shelburne Line Allowed Up To 200 Airmen To Get Back To England To Fly Against Nazi Germany, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

The Shelburne Line, facilitated by Military Intelligence, Section 9, was something like the American Underground Railroad, but in this case, it was developed during the waning days of World War II to help evading or escaping aircrew to get back to fly against the Nazis. Wherever the airmen went down, they were first housed in Paris, then were accompanied to a small town in Brittany, where a BBC announcement would alert the helpers to start conducting the airmen to “la maison d’Alphonse” atop a Nazi patrolled promontory. From that house, they would have to descend a steep cliff, wait anxiously …

Administrative Forfeiture In Omani Legislation., Kamla Nasser Salim Al Toubi, Salim Yahya Salim Al Kharusi

Sultan Qaboos University Legal Studies Journal

The Omani Legislature has established administrative forfeiture as a way for the managing authority to collect outstanding debts from defaulting debtors without involving the judiciary. However, this system is rarely used by the entities with theright to enforce it. To address this issue, a research study has been conducted to highlight the administrative forfeiture system. The study is divided into two sections. The first section explains the concept of administrative forfeiture, distinguishes it from judicial forfeiture, and clarifies its legal nature. The second section discusses the reasons for using administrative forfeiture, the types of debts that warrant this approach, and …

It’S A Question At The ‘Root’ Of The Problem: Fungal Associations Of Dionaea Muscipula (Venus’ Flytrap) Roots In Its Native Habitat, Anna A. Carnaggio, Michelle M. Barthet

Biology

Carnivorous plants survive in harsh habitats with limited nutrients and a low pH. Much focus has been placed on carnivorous trap evolution as the primary mechanism to increase nutrient acquisition through insect digestion. Soil microbiome, however, may also play a pertinent role in nutrient acquisition influencing plant vigor and overall success. Dionaea muscipula, commonly known as the Venus’ flytrap, is endemic to rims of the Carolina Bays located in southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina, where D. muscipula survives in nutrient poor soils with a vestigial root system. We utilized a combination of microscopy, plating, and metagenomics, to investigate …

The Adequacy Of The Seller's Obligation To Ensure Conformity In Protecting The Buyer In The Electronic Sales Contract, A Comparative Study., Rihab Marhoon Aamer Al Lwaihi, Saif Nasser Abdullah Al Mamari

Sultan Qaboos University Legal Studies Journal

Due to the significant gap created by advancements in science and technology, there is often a lack of understanding between the seller, who is well-versed in the professional aspects, and the buyer, who may lack the technical knowledge required to make informed purchasing decisions. Consequently, it has become important for sellers to guarantee that their products meet the standard specifications and satisfy the buyer's needs. This guarantee ensures that the buyer has strong legal protection in traditionalcontracts. The seller's commitment to adhere to the agreed terms is essential to a sales contract. This implies that the seller must guarantee that …

The French Theory Ofthe Autonomy Of International Commercial Arbitration In Light Of Islamic Law., Omar Hassan Al Youssef

Sultan Qaboos University Legal Studies Journal

There have been many studies comparing Maliki jurisprudence and French contract law. Still, little attention has been given to comparing arbitration in Islamic law with the French theory of the autonomy of international arbitration. Thisis surprising considering that some Arab countries have experienced serious consequences from applying the French theory in the past. Considering Paris's significant role as a place for arbitration, especially after Britain's exit from the European Union in 2020, it would be valuable to compare this French theory with Islamic law to develop fairer legal solutions than those followed in positive law. Therefore, this research compares the …

Research has demonstrated that anxiety can have a detrimental effect on learning and performance. Of great concern is the impact of anxiety on nursing students. By extension, additional research has shown that nursing students experience extremely high levels of anxiety, higher than many students in other programs. Specifically, nursing students have moderate to severe levels of anxiety due to many aspects of the educational program, but particularly when beginning clinical practice. Anxiety when beginning clinical practice among nursing students can cause negative outcomes in learning and performance. That is, when nursing students experience severe anxiety, they may experience the inability …

An Exploration Of The Influence Of Nursing Education Culture On The Integration Of Nursing Informatics Competencies Into A Collaborative Nursing Program Curriculum, Stephanie Atthill

Dissertations

Information communication technologies are becoming a customary part of the way in which nurses provide care. Consequently, it makes good sense to ensure that nursing informatics competencies are integrated into nursing curricula to prepare graduates for practice. However, few schools of nursing within Canada have fully integrated nursing informatics competencies into their curricula. Nursing education culture appears to influence decision-making, and the development of organizational priorities. Nonetheless, there are no known studies examining how nursing education culture impacts nursing informatics curriculum development endeavours. Therefore, this study aimed to address the following research questions: 1) In what ways does a nursing …

We present an overview and first results from the Spectroscopic Ultradeep Survey Probing Extragalactic Near-infrared Stellar Emission (SUSPENSE), executed with NIRSpec on JWST. The primary goal of the SUSPENSE program is to characterize the stellar, chemical, and kinematic properties of massive quiescent galaxies at cosmic noon. In a single deep NIRSpec/MSA configuration, we target 20 distant quiescent galaxy candidates (z = 1-3, H AB ≤ 23), as well as 53 star-forming galaxies at z = 1-4. With 16 hr of integration and the G140M-F100LP dispersion-filter combination, we observe numerous Balmer and metal absorption lines for all quiescent candidates. We derive …
