Treatment for trichotillomania is notably limited, preventing suffering individuals from having access to treatment. To address this need, researchers have developed and tested asynchronous online interventions for adults with trichotillomania. A factor that may impact the efficacy of these programs is the use of phone check-ins (or similar coaching support) to improve treatment adherence in website treatment delivery. In the current study we evaluated the role of check-ins on treatment adherence and efficacy of a website delivering acceptance and commitment therapy-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT). A sample of 101 adults with trichotillomania were randomly assigned to an A-EBT web-based intervention with …

Misophonia is characterized by intense emotional reactions to specific repetitive sounds. The clinical characteristics and developmental course of misophonia remain underexplored, particularly in treatment-seeking adults. In this study, we characterized the onset, symptom progression, trigger noises, and psychiatric comorbidities associated with misophonia. Additionally, we investigated the relationships between these clinical attributes and the severity of self- and clinician-rated misophonia symptoms. The sample included 60 adults with misophonia enrolled in a randomized controlled trial. Most participants (79%) reported symptom onset in childhood and early adolescence, with symptoms often worsening over time. All participants reported being bothered by human produced sounds. However, …

Rules, Privacy, And Ethics: Challenges In Creating Author Name Change Guidelines, Angela Yon, Emily Baldoni, Eric Willey

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

People change their names for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to, gender transition, change in marital status, and religious conversion. Guidance on the metadata management of author name changes for the myriad resources in a library’s discovery system is elusive and absent. Executing metadata for name changes creates many challenges in a rapidly advancing infrastructure of emerging discovery technologies, aggregators with shared metadata in multiple schemas, and numerous formats in varied platforms. Moreover, it is difficult to find a balanced approach to ethically apply evolving cataloging and name authority control rules to suit the linked data environment. …

Legitimacy At Sea: Expanding Considerations Of Sea Control, Ian Birdwell Oct 2024

Legitimacy At Sea: Expanding Considerations Of Sea Control, Ian Birdwell

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Sea control has been marketed and accepted as a norm within the global commons, with a variety of states arguing for their visions of control to be viewed as legitimate. As a piece of the global commons, sea lanes are a critical enabler for the global economy and possess significant military and political significance, yet the literature revolving around ideas of sea control treats it as a military achievement at the end of a campaign and remains focused on naval power as the key mechanism for state involvement. What best explains the mechanism states use to achieve sea control, especially …

Understanding Russian Hybrid Warfare Against Europe In The Energy Sector And In The Future ‘Energy-Resources-Climate’ Security Nexus., Maurizio Geri Oct 2024

Understanding Russian Hybrid Warfare Against Europe In The Energy Sector And In The Future ‘Energy-Resources-Climate’ Security Nexus., Maurizio Geri

Journal of Strategic Security

To avoid escalations to full kinetic (military) wars is imperative to win the non-kinetic part of the so-called “hybrid warfare”, which use both kinetic and non-kinetic methods. The goal of the non-kinetic methods of hybrid warfare, or as others call it “grey zone” activities, or “subthreshold” tactics, is to defeat hearts and minds, as well as pockets, of adversaries, with social, political, and economic tools. This article focuses on energy as the crucial sector of the economic tools, and specifically uses an innovative approach, what the author calls the ‘energy-resources-climate security nexus’, as a new battleground for future strategic competition …

An Overview Of The Activities Of Different Actors In The Reconstruction Efforts In Borno, Nigeria: 2016 - 2023, Wazeer Murtala

Journal of Strategic Security

Nigeria-Boko Haram’s competition for dominance has been the subject of many scholarly works and commentaries. Evidence shows that Nigeria is emerging victorious in the military struggle and the country is building on this relative success by engaging in infrastructural reconstruction that is akin to post-war rebuilding. With Borno State as the focal point, this article summarizes the activities of different actors (local and international) in the reconstruction efforts. Through a qualitative survey of different primary documents such as reports, news articles, videos, and other relevant materials, this study finds that the reconstruction efforts in Borno State between the years 2016 …

Crimen En La Frontera: Exploring Texas-Mexico Border Crimes Using A Geospatial Analysis, Carlos Alvarez, Jascha Wagner Oct 2024

Crimen En La Frontera: Exploring Texas-Mexico Border Crimes Using A Geospatial Analysis, Carlos Alvarez, Jascha Wagner

Journal of Strategic Security

Border crimes threaten public safety and security in the United States and the US-Mexico border region. Several evaluations support that data-driven, place-based crime prevention approaches can complement current public safety strategies and help reduce crime. Accordingly, place-based crime prevention may successfully prevent border crimes since these are inherently spatial. However, few studies have analyzed the geographies of Texas-Mexico border crimes, and assessments of data-driven, place-based crime prevention strategies of border crimes still lack a solid empirical foundation – especially in more rural border communities. To address this issue, this study builds police report data (Border Incident Assessment Report (BIAR)), used …

Regulating Deepfakes: An Indian Perspective, Shinu Vig

Journal of Strategic Security

Deepfakes are a growing concern throughout the world including India. Deepfakes can be used for several purposes, both innocuous or malicious. In India, several problems related to regulation of deepfakes have emerged. This paper makes an examination of current legal challenges posed by deepfakes as well as solutions in India that can be repurposed to address these challenges, including intellectual property laws, criminal laws, and the right to privacy. While these existing laws can be used to address certain aspects of the deep fake problem, there is an increasing recognition that specific legislations and regulations addressing deep fakes and synthetic …

Suicide Bombing In Afghanistan: A Multilevel Analysis, Kaneshka Nawabi

Journal of Strategic Security

In August 2021, an insurgency spearheaded by violent suicide campaigns saw the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan. A claimed four thousand suicide bombers remain a strategic asset at the hands of the Taliban and other extremist groups with extensive technical and logistical capabilities and a strong deterrence against their rivals. Despite this emanating threat, the majority of suicide terrorism research continues to rely on data from the Middle East, where social status, financial gains, and collective honour are cited as key factors. Using a multilevel framework and analysis, this article is based on field interviews with victims, …

Journal Article

This paper investigates China’s relations with the Philippines, especially focusing on its use of power in enforcing its claim of territories in the West Philippine Sea or the South China Sea. As such, this paper wishes to answer the following questions: How is power manifested in China’s actions vis-à-vis the Philippines regarding the territories of which both states set claim to? Being one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, China wields power and influence in the international community. As such, how does it capitalize on that position in dealing with its weaker neighbors like the …

In Or Out?: Understanding The Japanese Immigration Policymaking Process And The Sub-National Response To The Challenge Of Global Migration, Jeorge G. Alarcon Jr. Oct 2024

In Or Out?: Understanding The Japanese Immigration Policymaking Process And The Sub-National Response To The Challenge Of Global Migration, Jeorge G. Alarcon Jr.

Journal Article

There is no comprehensive Japanese immigration policy. The central government has refused to formally acknowledge a need for an immigration policy, viewing immigrants as a threat to public order and cultural homogeneity. Despite this, local governments still need to address the needs of their foreign residents and maintain the peace in the local communities. Some of these policies dovetail with each other; others have no counterpart on the other level of governance. What one can then observe with the national government in Tokyo and the local governments instead is a patchwork that involves some tangential, but for the main part, …

The Framework Is The Message: Legal And Ethical Implications Of Chatgpt, Amanda Turnbull Oct 2024

The Framework Is The Message: Legal And Ethical Implications Of Chatgpt, Amanda Turnbull

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The rapid rise of generative AI represents a palpable paradigm shift: models like GPT-3 (and its subsequent iterations), DALL-E, and AlphaCode are becoming foundation models for many other AI-based applications. Foundation models may be used for many different tasks with minimal modification and are positioned to replace task-specific models of AI. This holds tremendous promise in society such as advancing scientific research, rethinking education and training, and creating new types of art and expression. At the same time, however, generative AI has its dark side such as accuracy risk, the threat of large-scale unemployment, potential security vulnerabilities, and AI misbehaviour …

The Privacy Fallacy: Harm And Power In The Information Economy By Ignacio Cofone, Christopher D'Souza

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

‘‘Our privacy is besieged by tech companies,”1 laments Ignacio Cofone, Law Professor and privacy aficionado, in The Privacy Fallacy: Harm and Power in the Information Economy. In an enlightening yet harrowing discourse, Cofone draws on insights from behavioural science, sociology, and economics2 to argue that the widespread consent-based model of privacy is not only outdated, but untenable given modern data practices.3 Further, Cofone acknowledges the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in data processing, leading to novel challenges for the safeguarding of personal information.4 Thus, The Privacy Fallacy is more than just about privacy law’s shortcomings; it also raises questions …

R. V. Bykovets: An Affirmation Of Canadians’ Right To Informational Privacy, Bertina Lou

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The R. v. Bykovets decision illustrates how new technological realities can reconfigure societal norms and values in ways that demand recognition in the eyes of the law. This case commentary summarizes the Supreme Court’s 2024 Bykovets decision and situates it in jurisprudence on Section 8 of the Canadian Charter in relation to informational privacy. It also demonstrates how the normative approach applied by the SCC in Bykovets, which reflects increased accountability for third parties to safeguard individuals’ privacy, appropriately reconciles divergences in jurisprudence over time.

We administered a survey to law students at three Canadian law schools in the Atlantic region at the end of the Fall 2020 term. The survey asked students to compare their learning of each of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (FLSC)-mandated competencies, as well as several others taken from the Law Society of New Brunswick (LSNB) competency profile, in the Fall 2020 (online) term versus previous terms of study. The survey also solicited testimonies on students’ socialization into the legal community during their unexpected online law school experience. Our data sheds lights on which competencies, among those deemed …
