Immune cells elicit a continuum of transcriptional states after spinal cord injury (SCI). In mammals, inefficient debris clearance and chronic inflammation impede recovery and overshadow pro-regenerative immune functions. We found that zebrafish SCI elicits transient immune activation and efficient debris clearance. Transcriptomics and genetic ablation showed zebrafish macrophages are highly phagocytic and required for regeneration. Comparisons between zebrafish and mammalian macrophages identified transcription and immune response regulator (tcim) as an immune-enriched regenerative gene. Deletion of zebrafish tcim impairs phagocytosis and regeneration and activates a pro-inflammatory signature in leukocytes. My goal in this chapter is to show that symbiosis, especially symbiotic interactions between ‘macrobes’ (non-microbial organisms) and microbes, is a central topic in John Dupré’s work. This topic is undeniably one of the topics by which Dupré has gained wide recognition among practicing scientists, in addition to his recognition within the philosophical community. I spell out why symbiosis has turned out to be a sort of ideal trope for Dupré, as it encapsulates many of his main personal themes—from promiscuous realism to process ontology. Introduction Introducing surgical skills early in medical training may enhance students' confidence and readiness for clinical training. Simulation-based skill workshops provide students with a comfortable learning environment, resulting in effective learning. The goal of the Surgical Skills Workshop was to provide first- and second-year medical students with hands-on exposure to essential surgical skills. The educational impact on medical students' confidence in performing the respective surgical skills and changes in surgical career interest was assessed.

This study investigates the dynamics of the underground economy in the Indonesia–Timor-Leste border region, focusing on how cross-border informal activities evolve into a socially legitimized parallel economic system. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research was conducted in four regencies of East Nusa Tenggara Province that directly border Timor-Leste, utilizing field observations, in-depth interviews, and policy document analysis. The findings reveal that underground economic practices are not merely acts of legal transgression but adaptive responses to structural exclusion, regulatory ambiguity, and the absence of effective state services. Global agriculture is deeply affected by climate change, and more so in rural areas of developing countries, where the local smallholder farmers are already facing pressures from market-induced problems. Although capable of absorbing a large number of youths, small-scale farming is shrinking mainly due to enclosures and price squeezes. Drawing on a case study of five villages in Indonesia that are part of the Kajang Indigenous Communities, we apply an extended sustainable livelihood approach (SLA) to examine the strategies adopted by rural youth in the face of deteriorating small-scale farming. This study examines the perceptions of local government officials regarding adaptive capacity to climate change in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. While previous research often emphasizes technical or structural aspects, this study offers a perception-based and multidimensional approach, capturing institutional views from within key climate-sensitive agencies. Data were collected through a structured survey involving 576 purposively selected respondents from five provincial departments. Adaptive capacity was assessed across five dimensions: environmental, social, financial, political, and human resources. The results reveal relatively high awareness of environmental issues and internal collaboration, yet significant weaknesses in financial resources, public engagement, and human capital. This article explores the socio-political and ecological dimensions of land acquisition in the context of Indonesia's Trans Sulawesi Railway Project, focusing on Salenrang Village in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi. Grounded in a critical ethnographic method, the research examines how affected agrarian communities respond to dispossession through differentiated strategies, ranging from passive acceptance and conditional negotiation to symbolic and moral resistance. These responses are shaped by unequal access to land tenure recognition, fragmented compensation mechanisms, and exclusion from participatory decision-making processes. This study compares terrain-corrected polarimetric variables derived from L-band ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 acquired over a forested and mountainous region of southeast British Columbia (BC) during a drier and a wetter date. Backscatter, polarimetric decomposition parameters, and polarimetric discriminators were compared across 5 broad fuel types (forest, sparse, unforested, incomplete burn, complete burn) to examine if values differ between fuel moisture conditions as characterized by the value of the Drought Code (DC). Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a rare disorder causing bone fragility, pain, and functional impairment that causes substantial psychosocial burden. This study examined how self-perceived burden (SPB), or distress from feelings of dependence on caregivers, relates to depression, anxiety, and suicidality in adults with OI. A total of 208 adults (M age = 42.9, predominately White and female) with OI were recruited to complete a cross-sectional survey assessing SPB, psychological symptoms, health, and sociodemographics. Results indicated that SPB was significantly higher among younger individuals, those not living with a partner, those living with adult family members, lower-income groups, and individuals …

Recent legislation for place-based investments has illustrated a growing debate among U.S. policymakers over strategically targeting specific areas to stimulate economic development. Although the literature on placebased policies is mixed, there is evidence that the benefits of local job-creation programs are most significant in areas with the greatest economic distress. However, most place-based spending in the U.S. comes from state and local business tax incentives that generally do not target distressed places, thus limiting research on existing customized business service and job-training programs for distressed places. Pay-to-play clauses are a surprisingly understudied feature of venture capital financing deals. These provisions are designed to act as enforcement agents, securing investors’ long-term commitment by penalizing those who decline to provide additional funding when their portfolio startups come calling. Through an analysis of a novel dataset of pay-to-play clauses, this paper uncovers surprising patterns in how U.S. startups design and deploy them—most notably, their tendency to discriminate among investors despite legal guidance suggesting otherwise. The paper illustrates how pay-to-play clauses can increase enterprise value by addressing flaws in startups’ governance and capital structures, preventing destructive “chicken” games among investor …

This article explores the relationship of human freedom in the theological perspective and undocumented immigrants in the United States: how immigrants embody the divine image, Imago Dei, despite legal and social constraints. I will begin with the theological foundation—freedom as a distinguishing characteristic of God’s image in humanity—and analyze the complex nature of freedom as both a divine gift and a human responsibility. Called From Within The Community: The Vocation Of Undocumented Hispanic Men To The Diaconate, Anisabel Palma

This paper examines the discernment of undocumented Hispanic men to the diaconate within a diocese facing growing Hispanic populations and a shortage of Spanish-speaking clergy. Using ethnographic research, theological reflection, and historical analysis, it argues that this reality should be discerned not as a pastoral problem but as a response to concrete community needs. Interpreted through four theological perspectives (sacred vocation, divine initiative, unconventional divine choice, and the community-oriented nature of diaconal ministry) the study proposes that welcoming undocumented men into formal discernment and formation for the diaconate constitutes a faithful and ecclesial response to the Church’s mission.
