In his 2024 book, Jonathan Birch builds a precautionary framework for the borderlines of sentience, one that is meant to guide both theoretical reflection and practical action. One of the book’s great merits is its bottom-up approach, which presents itself as theoretically neutral regarding the (neuro-)physiological criteria required for sentience. Yet the singular place granted to midbrain-centric views (e.g., Merker, 2007; Panksepp, 2011; Solms, 2021) and to what Birch calls the “brainstem rule” (Chapter 11) raises questions. What justifies granting it such a central role? What are its practical and theoretical consequences?

Harmful algal blooms pose significant environmental and socioeconomic threats to many areas in South Florida, including Lake Okeechobee and its distribution canals. These blooms can simultaneously lead to the widespread mortality of aquatic life and to the emergence of public health hazards, which are especially detrimental to the localized economies around Lake Okeechobee that depend highly on fishing and water-related tourism. Lake Okeechobee has been monitored for water quantity and quality for several decades, providing an excellent context and opportunity to test and implement a new generation of bloom sampling techniques. Marine volatile methylated sulfur compounds (VMS) including dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and methanethiol (MeSH), are important natural sources of sulfur to the atmosphere and precursors to aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei. However, observations of DMS and MeSH in regions with sea ice remain limited. We present VMS measurements in the Arctic springtime from the ARTofMELT expedition. Hourly averaged DMS and MeSH observations range from below detection limit (< 1 pptv) to >1500 pptv, and from below detection limit (< 0.5 pptv) to >150 pptv respectively, with the highest concentrations observed during open ocean influence. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste represents both an environmental burden and a loss of carbon resources. Alkaline depolymerization of PET yields terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol (EG). Electrocatalytic oxidation of EG to glycolic acid (GA), the monomer of biodegradable polyglycolic acid (PGA), offers a sustainable route driven by renewable electricity. However, the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) involves competing pathways toward C2 products (GA and oxalic acid) and C1 products (formic acid and CO₂), making selective GA production a central challenge. Accurate determination of the platinum crystallite size distribution in carbon-supported platinum (Pt/C) catalysts is critical for evaluating both the initial performance and long-term durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Conventional characterization approaches—including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and the Scherrer equation—are limited by restricted statistical sampling, sensitivity to support interference, or the inability to resolve the full breadth of the size distribution. BACKGROUND: Human adenovirus (HAdV) among pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (allo-HCT) recipients can result in asymptomatic infection with risk for disease progression. There are limited data defining HAdV infection, disease, and case-fatality rates in a HAdV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) surveillance testing era. The current study aimed to define these outcomes using a priori definitions applied by a central review committee.

The problem of automated feature selection is one of the most important aspects of modern recommender systems, as overestimating the number of feature fields used, which can increase model complexity, inference latency, and performance degradation due to redundancy and noise. Although differentiable Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) based feature selection methods, including AutoField, are effective, they remain susceptible to initialization and local optima. Material and felt precarity are increasing in Ontario cities, impacted by housing and food unaffordability, an unpredictable drug supply, rising homelessness, and unmet social and health needs. The social relations of precarity play out in public spaces like libraries, changing how people’s work in, and experiences of, public space are organized. The worsening mental health epidemic among college students is marked by significant risk for loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Given that the demand for mental health care is outpacing institutional capacity, creative solutions are needed to augment traditional reactive interventions. In this qualitative research, we used narrative case study to explore the transformative power of community mural-making as experiential learning. Drawing on Seligman’s PERMA model (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment) we investigated how creative expression can cultivate positive psychological states to help students flourish (1991; 2011; 2018). This article examines the role of theatre costume in constructing and transmitting the memory of the performing arts, drawing on the exhibition Tisser le Temps: Histoire et Création du Costume Théâtral Marocain (Weaving Time: History and Creation of Moroccan Theatre Costume), presented in 2024 as part of the National Theatre Festival of Tetouan. Given the ephemeral nature of theatrical performance, costume emerges as a material trace capable of preserving the memory of the production, of the actor's body and of the creative process.
