In Varian Medical Systems, the Tax Court held in a unanimously reviewed opinion that the taxpayer was entitled to take a section 245A deduction for an amount treated as a dividend under section 78. Section 78 provides that deemed paid foreign taxes are treated as dividends received for foreign tax credit purposes, thus grossing up the amount of the dividend by the foreign taxes attributable to it before granting the FTC. This provision is needed because otherwise the taxpayer would enjoy both a deduction and a credit for the same foreign tax. Section 245A, however, eliminates the tax on the …

Indigenous Science Network Bulletin - November 2024
Indigenous Science Network
Board Chair, Liz McKinley has written an inspiring editorial that reflects on her journey as a Maori science educator working across all levels in a career spanning over 40 years. Liz also touches on one of the long running controversies that seems unavoidable in this space, that of the value and credibility of allowing non-western cultural knowledge into science curricula and pedagogy. The program of the second biennial Turtle Island Indigenous Science Conference, held at the University of Regina in Canada is available. This issue also contains three items written specifically for us. The first is a summary of the …

Development Of A Traditional Game “Engklek” Based On Numeracy Literacy To Improve Locomotor Movements Of Elementary School Students, Silvie Roikhatul Jannah, Nur Ahmad Muharram, Reo Prasetiyo Herpandika, Irwan Setiawan
Indonesian Journal of Research in Physical Education, Sport, and Health
Background: Locomotor movement is crucial for elementary school students as it enhances their physical development, motor skills, and overall engagement in physical activities. However, the development of locomotor movements among elementary schools has not been associated with literacy and numeracy, so it is necessary to have a traditional game media that contains elements of literacy and numeracy to improve locomotor movements in elementary school students. Objective: This study aims to create a product in the form of a literacy and numeracy-based “engklek” game to improve locomotor movements of elementary school students. Methods: This study uses the research and development (R&D) …

Evaluation Of The Indonesian Student Talent Identification Program, Moses Eleazar Ferdinandus, Widiastuti Widiastuti, Yasep Setiakarnawijaya, Oman Unju Subandi, Samsudin Samsudin, Iwan Setiawan, Muhamad Syamsul Taufik
Indonesian Journal of Research in Physical Education, Sport, and Health
Background: Identifying pediatric talent in sports presents significant challenges due to the complex interaction of physical, psychological, and developmental factors. Research shows that traditional talent identification methods often result in low levels of accuracy, complicating the selection process for young athletes. Talent identification programs need to be conducted and monitored regarding their success. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the Indonesian Student Talent Identification Program in 2022. Methods: This research uses qualitative techniques with an evaluation approach using the Context model, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP). Data collection methods include questionnaires, interviews, document studies, and observations. There were 34 provinces, …

Cervical Osteomyelitis In The Setting Of Multiple Comorbidities: A Complex Anatomical Approach. Illustrative Case, Jack A. Leoni, Michelle E. Veillon-Bradshaw, Kaleb J. Derouen, John M. Wilson, Wesley M. Shoap
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO), also known as spinal osteomyelitis or spondylodiscitis, is a rather rare yet serious disease comprising 3%–5% of all osteomyelitis cases, with only 3%–6% of this subset affecting the cervical spine. Risk factors include an advanced age, diabetes, immunosuppression, and intravenous (IV) drug use. The incidence of VO has increased over recent decades, with high-risk patients experiencing higher mortality rates. Treatment guidelines for VO are not standardized and rely on physician preference, often starting with IV antibiotics and progressing to surgery, if necessary. OBSERVATIONS A 54-year-old female with tracheostomy-dependent obesity hypoventilation syndrome, hypertension, and morbid obesity presented …

Pathological Fractures And The Perils Of Purchasing Steroids Online, Danielle C Thor, Valerie Rome
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Exogenous steroids are a staple of modern medicine, with utility in a variety of direct and supplemental treatment modalities. However, all pharmaceuticals are undoubtedly coupled with unique side effect profiles, and steroids are no exception. In the case presented, the assessment and management of a 36-year-old male who inappropriately self-administered high-dose steroids for prolonged periods of time is reviewed. In doing so, attention is drawn to both the impact of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and the greater risk of online availability of these powerful medications.

Transjugular Random Renal Biopsy: A Review, Katelyn Gill, Dan F. Laney Iv, Hector Ferral
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Random renal biopsy is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of systemic renal disorders. Percutaneous biopsy remains a safe option for most patients; however, the percutaneous approach may be considered too risky in approximately 5-10% of patients. In these high-risk patients, transjugular renal biopsy (TJRB) may represent an underutilized alternative. TJRB is a technically difficult procedure with a learning curve of approximately 10 cases. When performed properly, TJRB is a safe alternative to percutaneous biopsy in patients with renal failure or who are at high risk of bleeding. This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the indications, …

Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) can lead to cardiac failure, thereby signif- icantly affecting life expectancy and quality of life. Due to inadequate disease surveillance and risk assessment, clinical challenges persist despite advances in diagnosis and treatment. We aimed to review the potential of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) as a biomarker for predicting outcomes in PH patients. Methods: A thorough examination of the PubMed and Google Scholar databases was conducted through March 2023. Studies involving adult PH patients and hsTn as a prognostic indicator of outcomes such as mortality, hospitalization, and disease progression were included, after screening their titles and abstracts. …
A Deep Autoencoder For Electric Double Layer Capacitance Prediction In Electrochemical Sensors, Mason Mcgarrity, Feng Zhao
A Deep Autoencoder For Electric Double Layer Capacitance Prediction In Electrochemical Sensors, Mason Mcgarrity, Feng Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study explores the application of a deep autoencoder neural network to accurately predict the electric double layer capacitance from real-world parameters in binary, asymmetric electrolytes under low concentration conditions. By utilizing a modest simulation-based dataset of just 250 samples, the deep autoencoder neural network model developed in this study effectively predicted the capacitance by learning the critical features and relationships of the electric double layer model and encoding this learned representation into a low-dimensional latent space. From the latent variables, the decoder block of the neural network learned to effectively recreate the high-dimensional input. To enhance the model's robustness, …
The Fiduciary Duty Of Combatting Global Climate Change, Sadie Mapstone
The Fiduciary Duty Of Combatting Global Climate Change, Sadie Mapstone
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
Ancient Roman Law codified the concept that there are certain resources that are so great and so important to human survival, that intuitively, no person should own them. Further, the government must protect these resources for the people. Today, this concept is known at the public trust doctrine. According to the contemporary doctrine, the seas, oceans, shores, and submerged lands cannot be privately owned, but shall be held in trust by the government for public use. Relying on the public trust doctrine, climate change litigants have brought a tirade of lawsuits—which have largely been unsuccessful—alleging that the government has a …
