Neural Correlates Of Socially Rewarding Memories In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Kyle P. Blidy Oct 2024

Neural Correlates Of Socially Rewarding Memories In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Kyle P. Blidy

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Significance. Memory disturbances for emotional content are central to PTSD, yet most research focuses on trauma memories. Recent evidence suggests that enhancing access to positive memories could improve mood, affect regulation, self-esteem, and integration of trauma memories. However, the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying positive memory encoding in PTSD are poorly understood. No study has examined memory for positive social items in PTSD, which is important because PTSD entails social withdrawal and reduced accessibility to positive memory. Additionally, positive memories embedded in a social context have enhanced subjective value and strengthening their accessibility may confer greater benefits to wellbeing compared to non-social …

The Rhetoric Of Temporality In C.S. Lewis’S Works: A Study Of Time In Mere Christianity And The Chronicles Of Narnia, Lorraine Nasser Oct 2024

The Rhetoric Of Temporality In C.S. Lewis’S Works: A Study Of Time In Mere Christianity And The Chronicles Of Narnia, Lorraine Nasser

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This article explores the depiction of time in the works of C. S. Lewis, offering an analysis rooted in a reading of select passages that highlight issues of temporality in Lewis’ works. The select passages are from the following books: Mere Christianity; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; The Magician’s Nephew; and The Last Battle. The theoretical framework for this article is derived mainly from Aristotle’s perennial contribution to rhetoric, adopting his definition of rhetoric as: “The faculty of discovering, in the particular case, the available means of persuasion.” Moreover, this paper engages with published readership on Lewis’ …

“The Company At St. Anne’S” And “The God’S Gardeners”: What C.S. Lewis And Margaret Atwood Teach Us About Caring For Our Planet, Anne-Frédérique Mochel-Caballero Oct 2024

“The Company At St. Anne’S” And “The God’S Gardeners”: What C.S. Lewis And Margaret Atwood Teach Us About Caring For Our Planet, Anne-Frédérique Mochel-Caballero

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

At first sight, That Hideous Strength (1945) by C.S. Lewis and the MaddAddam trilogy (2003, 2009, 2013) by Margaret Atwood seem to have little in common. Yet, despite differences of time and place, and approach of the authors, there are startling and generative similarities between the two communities they depict, the Company at St. Anne’s and the God’s Gardeners. In considering the groups' opposition to reductionist technocracy and a shared set of principles, Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy seems to be carrying on the heart of Lewis' dystopic That Hideous Strength as effective ecological and ethical speculative fiction.

The Wart, The Wizard, And The Cathedral: Applying C.S. Lewis's Intertextuality Theory To T.H. White And J.K. Rowling, G. Connor Salter

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Applying C.S. Lewis' metaphor of authors being cathedral-builders to understand intertextual writing (combining influences with innovation) provides a fascinating lens to understand T.H. White's Arthurian work. Exploring how White's The Once and Future King influenced J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series (particularly her characters Vernon and Dudley Dursley) provides a particularly interesting example of how fantasy authors use intertextuality to create original works.

The Hag O’ The Hills: Terry Pratchett’S Tiffany Aching As Sovereignty Goddess, Eileen Donaldson Oct 2024

The Hag O’ The Hills: Terry Pratchett’S Tiffany Aching As Sovereignty Goddess, Eileen Donaldson

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

The Hag o’ the Hills: Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching as Sovereignty Goddess

In her book Folklore of the Disc Jacqueline Simpson argues persuasively that “Whatever is folklore on Earth finds its mirror in the reality of the disc” (14). Following her, I propose that a study of recurring images, motifs and allusions in the Tiffany books suggests that Tiffany might be considered the Discworld’s reflection of Earth’s Celtic Sovereignty Goddess. For anyone who has read the Witches books, even a superficial consideration of this statement rings true, given that the Celtic Sovereignty Goddesses were bound to the land and were …

Hell On Earth In Garth Nix’S Old Kingdom: Dark Jouissance And The Dead Mother, John Rosegrant Oct 2024

Hell On Earth In Garth Nix’S Old Kingdom: Dark Jouissance And The Dead Mother, John Rosegrant

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

The Old Kingdom’s River of Death is a hell impinging on life: The Dead take hideous Boschian forms, and helped by necromancers wielding “Free Magic” they often emerge from Death. Necromancers, Free Magic, and the Dead are battled by Abhorsens wielding “Charter magic,” Free Magic that has been transformed by symbols. Immersion in the Charter gives a joyous experience of connection to all life. Symbolization must unite with Free Magic to create this experience; symbolization alone is inadequate, as we see in the example of mundanely rational people who dwell in a neighboring land. But the source of joyous access …

"I'M Studying Beowulf With Beowulf Himself", Matthew Thompson-Handell

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Speculates that Tolkien may not have been the first to treat Beowulf in the way that he did (at least in the terms described by Professor Drout) by introducing the teaching and scholarship of Harvard professor George Lyman Kittredge (1860-1941).

Tolkien’S Lúthien: From Life To Art To Life As Art, Verlyn Flieger Oct 2024

Tolkien’S Lúthien: From Life To Art To Life As Art, Verlyn Flieger

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Like other of his Great Tales, the stories of Húrin and Túrin, Tolkien’s story of Lúthien grew over time in both verse and prose, moving through various versions from a comic fairy tale with a child narrator reminiscent of Marie de France to a romance in rhyming couplets imitative of Chretien de Troyes. Christopher Tolkien gives an account of his father’s development of the story of Lúthien in Beren and Lúthien, the third and final volume in his Great Tales series.

My intent here is less sweeping but more focused. I want to dig more narrowly but also more …

What Barfield Thought: An Introduction To The Work Of Owen Barfield, By Landon Loftin And Max Leyf, Katherine Sas

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Landon Loftin and Max Leyf's What Barfield Thought serves as an introduction to the key themes and concepts running through the work of Owen Barfield, the so-called "first and last Inkling." This digestible yet rigorous volume includes chapters on Barfield's primary areas of interest: Language, Poetry, The Evolution of Consciousness, Final Participation, and Science, Technology, and the Crisis of Meaning. With each chapter building on the last, this study makes an excellent primer to Barfield's often difficult and esoteric ideas.

Development Of An Evidence-Based Policy Handbook Utilizing A Hub And Spoke Practice Model: A Quality Improvement Dnp Project, Leah M. Coffman

Theses and Dissertations

Diagnosing a child with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in the State of Alaska requires a team-based approach. The current model is a hub model where providers refer to one of a few certified 4-Digit Code method teams in the geographically vast State of Alaska. Telehealth has been suggested as a viable alternative to in-person hub evaluations for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The State of Alaska FASD program and the Alaska Mental Health Trust Fund’s goals of moving towards a telehealth program for FASD evaluation, diagnosis, and management (WICHE-BHP, 2021). This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project sought to …

Adaptive Tracking Control For Omnidirectional Vehicle Based On Characteristic Modeling, Lei Cheng, Haoyou Wang, Xinjie Chen

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the stable and high-precision tracking control of omnidirectional mobile vehicles affected by their own characteristics and external disturbances, an adaptive tracking control approach for omnidirectional vehicles based on characteristic modeling is designed. The characteristic model is established by integrating the model properties into the characteristic parameters, and the characteristic parameters are estimated online by using the projected gradient method. A full coefficient adaptive control law based on the characteristic model is designed, and the stability of the proposed control method is analyzed by using Lyapunov theory. The effectiveness and rationality of the proposed adaptive control scheme are …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: Quercetin (Q) is a compound that can inhibit the growth of cancer cells in the colon; however, to do so, a high dose is needed, requiring a drug delivery system to target cancer endothelial cells directly. This study investigates the potency of nanodiamond-conjugated quercetin (NDQ) as an anticancer drug against colon cancer in Rattus norvegicus induced by N-methyl N-Nitrosourea (MNU). Materials and methods: This study is experimental-based and was designed using a six-group treatment method, namely normal control (KN: not treated by MNU, nanodiamond (ND), or Q); negative control (K–: treated by MNU); positive control (K+: treated by MNU …

Disappearance Of Cdc14 From The Daughter Spindle Pole Body Requires Glc7-Bud14, İdi̇l Kirdök, Ayşe Koca Çaydaşi Oct 2024

Disappearance Of Cdc14 From The Daughter Spindle Pole Body Requires Glc7-Bud14, İdi̇l Kirdök, Ayşe Koca Çaydaşi

Turkish Journal of Biology

Background/aim: The conserved phosphatase Cdc14 facilitates mitotic exit in budding yeast by counteracting mitotic Cyclin Dependent Kinase activity. Cdc14 is kept in the nucleolus until anaphase-onset, when its released transiently into the nucleoplasm. In late-anaphase, Cdc14 is fully released into the cytoplasm upon activation of the Mitotic Exit Network (MEN) to trigger mitotic exit. Cdc14 also localizes to yeast Spindle Pole Bodies (SPB) in anaphase and dephosphorylates key targets that resides at SPBs to license SPB duplication and prime the MEN. Protein Phosphatase 1 (Glc7) with its regulatory-subunit Bud14 is another phosphatase that plays a key role in spatiotemporal control …

The Dearth Of The Author In Ai-Supported Writing, Max Kreminski Oct 2024

The Dearth Of The Author In Ai-Supported Writing, Max Kreminski

Computer Science and Engineering

We diagnose and briefly discuss the dearth of the author: a condition that arises when AI-based creativity support tools for writing allow users to produce large amounts of text without making a commensurate number of creative decisions, resulting in output that is sparse in expressive intent. We argue that the dearth of the author helps to explain a number of recurring difficulties and anxieties around AI-based writing support tools, but that it also suggests an ambitious new goal for AI-based CSTs.
