Integral Ida-Pbc Of Underactuated Mechanical Systems With Actuator Dynamics And Uncertain Coupling, Enrico Franco, Pablo Borja
Integral Ida-Pbc Of Underactuated Mechanical Systems With Actuator Dynamics And Uncertain Coupling, Enrico Franco, Pablo Borja
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This work investigates the passivity-based control of a class of underactuated mechanical systems with first-order actuator dynamics and constant but uncertain coupling. The main contribution is a new dynamic extension of the interconnection-and-damping-assignment passivity-based control methodology that compensates for the effect of the model uncertainty. The effectiveness of the controller is demonstrated with numerical simulations on a ball-on-beam system.

The sustainability of food supply chains is gaining increasing attention, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. A food supply system that simultaneously prioritises resilience and minimises wastage is crucial. It is found that many studies have explored reducing food waste and increasing supply chain resilience as separate objectives, but research is scarce investigating both objectives in conjunction. This paper presents a comprehensive systematic review focusing on existing solutions to reducing food waste and enhancing resilience. It discusses future directions, particularly leveraging emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things, blockchain, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The studies are categorised into three …

Local voices carry tremendous weight during natural disasters, yet the possibilities for employing participatory communicative practices for disaster management in India have not been fully explored. Effective community-centred disaster communication garners participation in disaster management processes that reduce vulnerabilities. This paper examines how various community-based organisations used community radio to enhance community engagement and the effectiveness of the disaster management processes in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The research relies upon case studies of disaster communication practices of two community radio stations during the ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ Yaas, which made landfall in Odisha. It describes the conceptual shift …

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and spatial transcriptomics (ST) are two emerging research technologies that uniquely characterize gene expression microenvironments on a cellular or subcellular level. The skin, a clinically accessible tissue composed of diverse, essential cell populations, serves as an ideal target for these high-resolution investigative approaches. Using these tools, researchers are assembling a compendium of data and discoveries in healthy skin as well as a range of dermatologic pathophysiologies, including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and cutaneous malignancies. The ongoing advancement of single-cell approaches, coupled with anticipated decreases in cost with increased adoption, will reshape dermatologic research, profoundly influencing disease characterization, …

Recording and analysis of neural activity are often biased toward detecting sparse subsets of highly active neurons, masking important signals carried in low-magnitude and variable responses. To investigate the contribution of seemingly noisy activity to odor encoding, we used mesoscale calcium imaging from mice of both sexes to record odor responses from the dorsal surface of bilateral olfactory bulbs (OBs). The outer layer of the mouse OB is comprised of dendrites organized into discrete "glomeruli," which are defined by odor receptor-specific sensory neuron input. We extracted activity from a large population of glomeruli and used logistic regression to classify odors …

BACKGROUND: ChatGPT is rapidly becoming a source of medical knowledge for patients. This study aims to assess the completeness and accuracy of ChatGPT's answers to the most frequently asked patients' questions about shoulder pathology.
METHODS: ChatGPT (version 3.5) was queried to produce the five most common shoulder pathologies: biceps tendonitis, rotator cuff tears, shoulder arthritis, shoulder dislocation and adhesive capsulitis. Subsequently, it generated the five most common patient questions regarding these pathologies and was queried to respond. Responses were evaluated by three shoulder and elbow fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons with a mean of 9 years of independent practice, on Likert scales …

Jellyfish and gelatinous zooplankton (GZ) in general, fulfill important ecological roles with significant impacts, although they are often oversimplified or misunderstood. This paper reviews the impacts, pressures, monitoring methods and current management strategies for various GZ groups. It also introduces potentially applicable indicators for their assessment in ecosystem-based management approaches, such as the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). This multi-faceted review is primarily envisioned to serve as a state-of-the-art document for scientists and policymakers to foster a holistic assessment and management of GZ across European regional seas. The systematic review on global impacts of GZ shows a notable increase …

Open Educational Resources (OER) are digital texts, news media, and other types of resources publicly accessible under an open license, and they can be used for teaching, learning, evaluation, and research. OER is the term for information and products that are freely used, remixed, improved, and redistributed by anybody with the owner's permission under specific licenses. These are designed to be adjusted for regionally unique circumstances to reduce barriers to accessibility through efficient instruction. The creation and promotion of free educational resources are often motivated by providing a better and alternative educational perspective. Open educational resources are educational, research, and …

Perspectives On Quality-Of-Life Changes Experienced By Mental Health Court Participants, Kathy Joan Edwards
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The association between mental health court participation and a reduction in recidivism is well documented. The question of whether mental health courts meet their therapeutic goals has received little scholarly attention. Therapeutic outcomes for mental health court participants are not well understood. Quality-of-life changes are a therapeutic outcome for mental health court participants. The purpose of this study was to explore factors related to such changes. The conceptual framework was based on therapeutic jurisprudence and criminogenic risk theory as implemented through the risk-need responsivity model. Quality-of-life changes as experienced and reported by 13 mental health court participants were qualitatively examined …

Strategies Small-To-Medium Sized Family Businesses Leaders Use To Expand Beyond Domestic Markets, Suresh Lakshmikanthan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Most of India's small to mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) are family-owned. These businesses are crucial to the economy and contribute significantly to a nation’s gross domestic product. However, the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement subsector of family-owned SMEs faces challenges in expanding due to limitations in global competencies, skills, and financial resources. Grounded in a composite dynamic capability theory and resource-based view conceptual framework, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to identify and explore successful international expansion strategies used by family-owned SME Indian pharmaceutical and nutraceutical companies. The participants included six SME Indian CEOs and owners in India who …

Leadership Strategies For Reducing Unethical Practices By Organizational Leaders In The United States Foodservice Industry, John Badu Anang
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Public confidence in organizational leadership is dwindling due to recurring scandals within large corporations. Despite recent ethical failures, many organizations have yet to implement effective strategies to foster ethical leadership and transform their corporate cultures. Lack of ethical leadership is particularly concerning in vital sectors such as the foodservice industry, where unethical leadership can harm consumers and the environment. An exploratory multiple-case study design was used to examine what leadership strategies some organizational leaders in the U.S. foodservice industry could use to reduce unethical practices. Participants were adults with managerial or supervisory roles in the U.S. foodservice industry for at …

On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on students at Kent State University (KSU), killing four and wounding nine. Although this event marked a watershed moment in American culture and the start of a decline in activism related to the war in Vietnam, its place in higher education history is not well-understood. This paper traces the co-evolution of campus activism and the student affairs profession, situates the activism occurring at Kent State nationally and locally, and suggests the impact the shootings had on student affairs and law enforcement practice. The narrative is presented in large part through …

As graduating seniors, we are blessed to reflect on all that the Sociology Department has done for us in the past 4 years. Starting at Santa Clara University in 2020, we took our first round of courses completely online, including SOCI 1: Introduction to Sociology, which we unknowingly took together, especially as it was so hard to meet other students asynchronously. In Spring 2021, a few classes transitioned into a hybrid format, one of which being SOCI 35: Intro to Research Design and Methods with Professor Nichols. We were one of few students that opted into the in-person learning option, …

When I think about Silicon Valley and the big tech companies that are only about a thirty-minute drive from Half Moon Bay, there are major differences between the pay, benefits, and perks that come with working at the goggles of the world. Thermos for work. Boots for the rain. Rain Gear. Hoodies to protect us from the sun and to keep us warm are some of the things that the campesinos asked for… I think of corporate jobs and how when you get hired you get all the material that you will need to do your job given to you. …

Silicon Valley Sociological Review
Ethnic Studies (ES) was established in 1968 as part of the Third World Liberation Front’s (TWLF) efforts to reform higher education in ways that incorporated non-euro-centric teaching and increased the racial/ethnic diversity of students and faculty. On many college campuses, ES programs have created spaces for cross-cultural learning that promote respect and champion interpersonal interactions. Over the last 50 years, however, efforts to sustain diversity-centric education have remained isolated attempts by individual colleges and universities. In 2020, this changed when California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1460. The bill took effect in the 2021-2022 academic year and …
